Way back in the Dark Ages when I began my LEO career (late '80s/early '90s), I tended to carry slugs in my issued 20" (later 14") Remington 870. I was not happy with the idea of a stray round of buckshot wandering away. Probably over-thought it, but that's where my mind was at. Later, I had it where first round up was our issued 00B, figuring in a dire enough situation, I'd be very close. The next 3 rounds were 1oz slugs. The last few years of my career, though, we got the then-new Federal Premium 00B with "Flite-Control" wads. Man, that stuff stayed TIGHT in every shotgun I tested it in. Once while I was running night quals, a grumpy sgt shot the slug part of his qualifications inadvertently still loaded with that Federal buckshot. 1 shot from 50 y, 2 from 40y, 2 from 25 y ... and every single pellet was still on the torso of the silhouette target! Every. Single. Pellet. Even retired, that's what I run in my shotguns to this very day.

I was filming a Marine M-60 machine gun position one evening at dusk along a trail in Vietnam - when two VC carrying AK's tripped a flare. Before the MG gunner got a shot off, a Marine NCO knocked out both Charlies with his Model 97 at a range of about 15-20 yards. His two rounds neutralized the sixty or so rounds carried by the VC. I have been a fanboy of the 12 gauge shotgun as a defense weapon ever since that evening. I use a Remington 870 with a factory issued short barrel. Although I once converted this weapon with a folding stock and pistol grip - I have returned it to its original wooden stock configuration. The only modification I have done with this 870 is to add a flashlight under the barrel (mine includes a red dot) and to add a shell holder on the stock. I have not added a longer magazine tube but have removed the spacer from the magazine which gives me four rounds plus one in the chamber. I don't expect to reenact the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. I use OO buck and I don't have any neighbors close to worry about over penetration. If I were in a house with several people who might be in adjoining rooms or if I lived in a dwelling that shared walls with an adjoining residence - I might think about using smaller shot because of reduced penetration. At the ranges within a "normal" house (3-10 yards) #2 or #6 shot would be very effective. Hell - even birdshot would stop a bad guy at close ranges.

Personally, buck shot for home defense is a great stopper. This is especially true when the intruder is hopped up on some kind of drugs. When I was younger, about 30 years ago, I heard a couple of my uncle talking about pcp. I didn't know exactly what it was, only about 11 at the time. They talked about a man who was shot 17 times with pistols before dropping. They found out later that he was in the "superman" drug as it was known then. I do like the bird shot for self defense for it will not go into the neighbors house and injure or kill an innocent person, slug would after exiting the intruder. The buck shot is my personal choice of home defense for it had the stopping power without the over kill.

My understanding as a mildly-informed layman is that a test like this where you shoot at this sort of target, which provides a strong visual stimulus -- but little in the way of context -- strongly favors the slug. As you said the slug is a massive projectile which tends to smash whatever is in its way, creating visually impressive entry and exit wounds. Buckshot, at its core, works by creating as many bleeding wound channels as possible (so long as each wound channel is deep enough to reliably reach vital organs). However, with 00 each individual pellet is a just a .33 caliber round ball weighing about 50-60 grains -- it doesn't do any more damage than, say, a .32 ACP FMJ round would... but when eight or nine of them strike the target at once, the dynamic changes massively. Also, despite common belief, the tighter the pattern, the greater the trauma (generally speaking). While having a looser pattern might increase the chances of striking another vital organ along the periphery your impact zone, in general buckshot loads that impact with multiple pellets that strike closer to one another are capable of inflicting more trauma. However, where slugs really shine is against bone. The bone simulants in ballistics dummies doesn't always represent the hardness, density, and obliquity of actual skeletal structures very well. Pistol-caliber rounds -- to say nothing of buckshot pellets -- have a track record of deflecting off of bones, especially certain ones. Slugs perform far better due to their inherent characteristics (shape, mass, inertia) and have a greater chance of either fracturing bones outright or at least resisting drastic deflection. Again, this is just what I've picked up from a variety of sources over the years. There are no doubt exceptions to everything I've said here and I don't pretend to be an expert.

I put birdshot in my 12 gauge home defense gun. I know, I hear everyone. But no distance in my house is longer than 22 feet, amd at that distance, most of the pellets are still together, but getting some spread. If I hit them with the full load, they're gone, if I miss, probably still tagging them and that's DNA now present. I know it isn't takimg them out of the fight, but definitely making them feel it. Plus if I hit the wall, it's still going through the wall, but breaking up pretty well. That's only the first shot though, #2 is 4 aught, #3 is a slug, #4 is 4 aught again and #5 is a slug.

I would say only use those if you have family in the house.
@RichardCranium321 Жыл бұрын
Why would you take the most effective smooth bore weapon on the market and immediately handicap it by using soft target loads? Also, inside of 20 feet, the average 55gr FMJ 5.56 breaks up when hitting the first layer of drywall, it still carries through the back side but with barely enough force to do any damage. Worst part is if you engage a target or multi targets who are entering through an open door.... Can you guarantee none of those pellets are going outside your open door? If you hit a soft watery target with a 5.56 inside of 100 yds it's going to fragment and dump all energy. Even at point blank, it would not exit the guys back. (See: Rittenhouse/Hubert)
@timg7627 Жыл бұрын
Larger size bird shot is fine within 10 yards. That will be plenty effective. I’ve never understood the thought process behind loading with some series of different shells. You’re anticipating what you think will happen in a home defense encounter based solely upon an imaginary scenario in your head. It’s just fantasy land. It’s makes zero sense to me but to each their own.
@shaneolsen9394 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say bird shot is completely ineffective but I did some testing of bird shot on a pumpkin but I put a T shirt and light sweatshirt on it and at 10 paces (furthest point of view in my house) and i was a little disappointed. Only a few pellets went through the clothing and none went into the inside of the pumpkin all stayed in the "skin" of the pumpkin so for me it kinda ruled out birdshot. But buck shot went through and through. Just food for thought.

It's kinda funny, low recoil buckshot spreads less and penetrates deeper than full power buckshot. Edit: also, don't use birdshot for home defense 😂
@cgsimons1187 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that some of the more expensive buckshot is designed to have less deformation coming out of the barrel, so the pattern is tighter. With less deformation(remaining round rather than flattening to any degree) of the shot, it also tends to punch deeper.

Though I will happily use OO Buck for 12 Gauge, I prefer the somewhat forgotten OOO Buck which gives you eight .36 caliber pellets or O Buck which gives you 12 .32 caliber pellets. O Buck gives especially good evenly distributed patterns. Probably my favorite load for 12 Gauge, though #1 with typically 15 pellets is excellent as well. There's also the 12 pellet Magnum 2 3/4" OO load, and the 27 pellet #4. There are a number of Buck pellet sizes that are very little or almost completely unused for some reason, including the half and letter sizes. Those you have to handload. The single factory Buckshot load for 16 Gauge with 12 pellets of #1 is truly excellent with very well distributed patterns, and eight pellets of OO also works well in 16 Gauge. The pellets don't quite stack evenly in the case, but close enough. I do wish the factories would load a greater variety of the 14 or so different Buckshot sizes. Very rarely do you see #1 or O used in 12 Gauge, and never #3, which seems to be limited to 20 Gauge. The OOOO, .44, .45, and .50 caliber Buck pellets reach a point of diminishing returns due to low pellet count. But perhaps in the rarely used 10 Gauge or the seldom seen 8 Gauge.

Good vid, but as a person who used a 12 gauge with double ought on a person, you fired assuming the attacker would be naked. While my shot knocked them to the ground, and did serious damage, at about 9 yards, was not lethal. They had a t shirt, and flannel type shirt, and wearing a carhart jacket. The jacket being a duck down actually stopped most of the shot. I think if you "dressed" your targets, the damage would be more accurate.

That Force X2 load by Federal is good, 00 buck and each pellet breaks into two pieces. 18 wound channels instead of 9, more energy and significantly reduced chances of over penetration. "If any birdshot would work, it would be this." No, I don't think so. Duck, goose, and turkey are all birdshot. If you're going to test birdshot, why go with a dove load? #7 shot will not do as much damage because the bird it is made for is small and light. So, taking a birdshot round meant for a bird that weighs a few ounces will not do as much damage as a birdshot meant for a bird weighing several pounds. Either way, if you're going to do a "test" on effectiveness, why use something so weak. If you don't want to recommend them, fine. At least be honest enough to use a round that is comparable in design.
