This was a super unique idea I hadn’t considered before! I’ve always seen wads hit cardboard or bounce off targets but never considered what damage they could actually cause by themselves.

Reminds me of an idea I had a long time ago: Using something like a 3 or 3&1/2” magnum shell, fabricating (3D printing, etc.) a very thick walled and strong plastic one piece Sabot/Wad, or as 2 separate pieces. Employing some sort of specific solid, hard metal projectile as the central, protruding ballistic “payload” of this Sabot (something like the Bullets from “Black Tip” 5.56, .308, or 30-06, etc.) The “Hypotheses”/Experimental Goal of course to see any potentially effective results against different levels and types of Armor Materials. Like *maybe* lower threshold Rifle Rated Plates… I’m Sure someone has already tried this and/or similar tests, Lol. But I still remain curious, 👊!

That first head trauma is a depressed skull fracture. It would cause internal bleeding and TBI. The victim might survive with immediate medical intervention, but "might" is the key word.

You may be 100% correct 👍! But I’m not certain of the actual severity of a real injury… ‘Cause these Ballistic Heads (and Torsos) only provide a potentially Loose Approximation to something like the Human Skull Bones. They are Not a 1:1 Analog for Real life thick, heavy Skull bone. But I Don’t know or Claim to know precisely how Much the variance is..?

Blank pistol rounds have killed people when fired at the temple at close or contact range. A shotgun round is just a large pistol round as it operates at similar pressures. Therefore, a shotgun blank to the temple would kill someone easily. Hexum(actor) became restless and impatient during the delay and began playing around to lighten the mood. He had unloaded all but one (blank) round, spun it, and-simulating Russian roulette-he put the revolver(44 magnum) to his right temple and pulled the trigger, unaware of the danger.[9] The explosive effect of the muzzle blast caused enough blunt force trauma to fracture a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel this into his brain, causing massive hemorrhaging.[3][10]

I always wondered about this. As a kid I was told blanks will kill you so same applies to a plastic wad. Good video brother!

I very much enjoy your channel and have been a subscriber for at least 4yrs. My only critique of this video is that by cutting the shells in 1/2, there isn’t enough back pressure to allow the majority of the power to burn. You made mention of this after shooting the can of Mello-Yello, but the plastic flaps that fold over (crimp) to hold shot in the hull, also provide back pressure that allows more time for the power to ignite. Try leaving enough plastic to crimp the wadding in and the results should be even more impressive; especially with the Blue Sterling wads. There is a special target load that has a heavier, dark wad that allows the skeet shooter to more accurately see where there shot placement is. Naturally, having 7/8 to 1oz of shot in the shell will add resistance as well and allow more powder to burn, but you might want to try crimping a few of the wadding’s in the hull, especially the sterling blue wads, and see if that doesn’t make the wads more effective. With a crimped hull & a heavy wad, I think you could get a fairly accurate shot at 10-15 yards.

Never underestimate a 12 gauge. Quality buckshot can reach speeds faster than a 9mm bullet... Except there's nine of them.
@rickh93968 ай бұрын
Without the shot/BBs, the shells generate lower pressures, but they also don't have the weight of the shot/BBs counteracting those pressures. It's too bad you can't chronograph the wads separately from the shot/BBs in normally loaded shells. Of course, that only matters if you're interested in the lethality of the more common scenario: a wad that separates from the rest of the load, not just a wad without the normal load.

In actual practice, these wads are going much faster because as natural loads function, the propellant has time to thoroughly burn behind the heavy accelerating shot load. I've seen wads knock big holes through cardboard at 25yard or beyond. In order to get more complete burn in these tests, some manner of closing that shell back up or putting buffer material in there (shredded paper or something similar) where the shot load was, could create enough resistance to allow the propellant to ignite and generate significantly better acceleration for the wad.

Thanks for the video. I think all three of the wad hits to the head would be fatal. That kind of shaking of the head would do serious damage to the brain. If the person received quick treatment, maybe he/she survives, but if the person survived, I would expect permanent damage. People have died from pistol blanks fired against the skull. What is essentially a shotgun "blank" is going to have more power. The flame from around the barrel of the Benelli was interesting. I really thought that the wad had ricocheted off the skull and gone back into the barrel. I'm glad your next shot with the Benelli didn't cause the barrel to explode.

u should try a polymer load. like a 3d printed slug or 3d printed bbs and see how they work too. prob would make a good self defense round due to the light weight and low penetration

I'm fairly certain those head shots with the wads would still kill. The projectile doesn't necessarily have to penetrate the target to kill. Depressed skull fractures can potentially cause an epidural hematoma in the brain which is basically a ticking time-bomb.
