Thank you Thinkschoo for the information. I am an ex employee of the Corporation and am very well aware of the scenario. The best part, as you said, was settlement of claims, be it death or otherwise, swift and without any corruption. Huge amounts are settled promptly and with least paperwork. Here the agents come to the rescue of the grieving family. So, at least in rural or semi urban population, agent is the link or the face of the Corporation. There are a number of cases wherein the original agent is either dead or not reachable, in such cases, some other agent goes to help, without earning a single rupee. Its very difficult in this current situation where people compare insurance with stock market for profit making. So, though, LIC has thought about direct marketing or online marketing as congruent channels for marketing, agents become the basic pillars for business. As nation builder, LIC plays a major role but is always underplayed, as this isn't given the publicity that is needed. We were always told that this was WIDOWS' MONEY. So, though, best service was expected which was prompt and corruption free, basic amneties weren't provided to the employees. With the advent of foreign players, LIC stood tall with maintaining their market share with the help of employees and field staff. LIC changed its face and had new customer friendly offices. As you said correctly, there is no profit as such. But the surplus is efficiently managed. So the mechanism, even if it is not a private sector, is oiled properly. There will still be a need for new marketing strategies in the years to come. I believe that the best is yet to come. Thank you so much, once again, for the time and efforts put into this vdo. Keep rocking Thinkschool

Could you please make a case study on Downfall of BSNL. I still feel it is one of the best telecom company in India, but is stripped off of its services strategically by some elements of the Government and Private sector players. It is a slow killing of a giant.
@bravewarrior12182 жыл бұрын
BSNL. I am of the opinion, that it is not any Government but Trade Unionism, work culture and corruption at all levels, which has destroyed BSNL and many other PSUs. Both employees and officers are responsible. I am not saying that there are no dedicated officials in BSNL, but I am telling that general work culture in a PSU is unprofessional. A Govt servant does not think that he is a servant of the people but he thinks that he is the master of the people. BSNL had great opportunity to serve the country and also employee get good salary but have wasted this opportunity. I am not telling that Govt policies are not responsible, but if employees could give very good result, no Private Company could replace BSNL. One cause of unprofitability is huge staff and salary expenses but Unions will never accept staff restructuring. Importance of Unions will decrease there only few thousand employees. Now there are about 1.5 lakh employees. Now, only total restructuring and professionalism can save BSNL.

The reason LIC agents annoy people so much to get a policy is because of the lucrative commission that they get. Just to give you an idea say I pay a premium of 1lk per year to LIC and the term is 15 years the agent get 25% of the premium paid as commission in the first year, 15%(7.5% each year) for 2nd & 3rd year, 5% every year until the 15th year. Technically I will pay 15lks in premium to LIC over 15 years and LIC pays almost 1lks in commissions over 15 years. The agent job is just to find clients and convince them and do the paperwork which might take a week but look at the returns, its huge. Here I have given an example of just 1lk premium paid per year, in a year if they manage to get aleast 10lks in premium paid to LIC the return is 10lks. This is where LIC is losing most of the money, if LIC manages to cut off agents and move online completely then it will be a monopoly for years to come.
@ashwatthama40752 жыл бұрын
You are correct, but you must understand most people in India especially Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and villages won't trust online transactions for things like insurance. Even after so many years insurance penetration in India is very very low compared to developed countries. Also, most LIC agents are housewives, middle class people working as an agent as a secondary job and many rely solely on this to run their family. Their are millions of beneficiaries due to this. And, most agents don't get their complete commissions. They are forced by the people to reduce their commission, many end up only with 5-10% of total commission. There is cut throat competition amongst agent to reduce their commission by giving back the earned money to the customer or customer would pay discounted amount based on their calculations.

The major concern for LIC is its dependency on nearly 13.5 Lakh ( which brings 95% of their business) Agents, on which they paid around 22,358 crores in 2021, and whatever the money they are and they had invested, is the money of policyholders, and I'm always been Optimistic but anything happens to the market which hurts people, money, and their life too. Also, they are lacking in Tech-based distribution over Agents, where they nearly lost a market share of 12% from 56% in 2016 to 44 % in 2022; in individual policies and group policies market share has reduced to 77% in 2020, which was 81% in 2016. Also now LIC gonna listed on the index which means these numbers need to improve and they need passive income sources apart from the money of policyholders.

As son of a successful LIC agent, I have heard many discussion between an agent with the client. And it is my strongest view that LIC has been successful simply because it was seen as a government (backed) organization. There was times in 1980's and 1990's where many investment companies would open up and siphon off people's money. Hence there was a trust on government backed LIC that helped agents to convince customers that their money was safe. I agree some of the other comments below that some lic branch officers were rude and behaved like any other government officer. But for common public, the safety of money was of utmost importance that helped LIC a lot.

Very well presented. Dissected well to understand the strength and weakness. If you can further dig the goldmine called LIC on wealth built by investment in stocks.

We all know how LIC was also the bank for Indian people, the way it invests in strategic pillars of India and what not. They way you showed this is remarkable and should be seen by all, especially foreign retail investors, who should know how this behemoth was built out of a poverty struck country, back in the 50s. LIC makes India Proud! Amazing explanation Think School

Just make an account on a broker app and read books and watch youtube videos to understand how to make a good portfolio. How much profit did Lic make in financial year 2020 - 2021 ?
@abinashdas96192 жыл бұрын
LIC never generates profit. How can you generate profits when people are paying their premium now and LIC's liability will end on their death. So LIC can never generate profit. It can only generate surplus. It means that LIC assumes that X no of insured people will die during the year and thus book their liabilities for that year. And suppose less than X no of insured people dies, LIC does not need to pay that difference amount of people any money on that year. That is called surplus
