Pointer1: Get going from 2nd gear, hardly any gas. You don't want to break traction as that will polish off the snow under the tyre and turn it into ice. Ride the clutch on the verge of stalling. 2: If at all possible don't stop if going uphill. 3: Get as much weight as possible on the drive axle. Put your mother-in-law in the boot if it's a RWD and ask 2 folks to sit on your wheel arches if it's FWD (just to get going). 4: Get a Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo and you don't need any help :))

Winter tyres effectively cost nothing as you can only wear out one set of tyres at a time. A spare set of wheels really don't cost much compared with the cost of the car. They should be mandatory from November to March.
@Isobel20110 жыл бұрын
yep totally agree. I got them for that winter 2010/2011 and was so glad I did. I'll never be without them now.
@Nevalti10 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse WINTER tyres are certainly NOT just for snow. They are significantly better on snow, slush, ice, mud, wet roads and indeed ANY time it is cold. They are much softer rubber and therefore work far better than summer tyres which are hard rubber. BUYING SENSE: If you buy winter tyres in the winter you must obviously expect to pay full price. If you buy them in the summer you should get about 30% discount - I did. I have a Mercedes E-Class and paid £108 per tyre for top class Nokian tyres; money well spent. I guarantee I could drive up the hill in the video with no problems whatsoever - AND stop coming DOWN the hill. Don't forget that braking and steering are just as important as traction - and 4 wheel drive doesn't help one iota with those.
@Nevalti10 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse A lot of people don't realise the HUGE benefit of soft rubber. If in doubt - ask a Formula 1 driver! As for 'need', many of us country-folk get up before dawn and drive many miles on un-salted roads. We 'need' the best tyres possible. Most town dwellers have NEVER experienced black ice and probably don't even know what it is. Snow: A car with narrow tyres cuts through snow and can get a reasonable grip - that is why the Fiesta (?) in the video did well. A car with wide tyres floats on a bed of compressed snow and may sit there helplessly. Stiff treads, such as on high speed rating tyres, low profile tyres and run-flat tyres make it even worse - which is why BMWs are often struggling the most.
@Nevalti10 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse Oh dear, one of those strange people who think they knows it all. Apparently you are here to lecture us - about your OPINIONS rather than facts. I suggest that you refrain from making silly assumptions young lady and confine yourself to facts. The FACTS are that winter tyres are safer in cold weather. THAT is what they are designed for. Their performance in snow is just one benefit out of many. IF you can think of any significant disadvantage to using winter tyres, in the winter, someone may be interested to hear your opinion.

It is 2016 now and tire (tyre) retailers sell tires that are mid-way between 3-season and winter tires; softer than 3-season tires, but not as soft as pure winter tires. They are almost as good as winter tires, but in the summer they don't wear away so quickly like winter tires would, so they can be kept on the car all winter and all summer long, no changing of tires needed. These tires are called "ALL WEATHER" tires. I live in Ontario Canada, and here its suicide to drive in the winter without winter tires. Those 'All Weather' tires are just not good enough here.
@RuneVenes9 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't the cars or the drivers... it's the tires. Get winter tires! You dont need studs in them, just normal studless winter tires. Here in Norway many use stud less, but also many use winter tires with studs in them. Thats because we often drive on ice, not snow.

Along with my post about Winter Tyres, they are not just for snow/ice but for all driving conditions when the temperatures are below +7oC ( which in the UK means going to work and coming home in the evening during the winter months are well below +7oC so will massively help ). Also a winter tyre doing 30mph will stop 11m shorter than a normal tyre doing 20mph at +7oC or below......which could mean the difference between life or death.....or at least an expensive insurance claim.

@albin43239 жыл бұрын
+nightflyer1100 Snow in London (belive it or not) is actually very rare, not because the weather it's mild due to the Gulf stream and low pressures from N Atlantic, but also since it's a big city with too much heating elements under the ground which will melt snow even if it's below -5 Celsius. In other words people in London are far from used to drive in snow, so don't blame them!
@Hugo030-b3v8 жыл бұрын
Faronstream I blame them because they should be using winter or all season tires from mid November till mid March ish. The last time I went to Toyota Kingston, the rep tried to convince me I don't need winter tires since temperatures never go below 7 degrees Celsius in London. This was in October this year. I asked him if he realises that the previous day it was 2 degrees in 5:30 am when I started driving to work and he said he didn't know because he wakes up at 8 o'clock because he starts work at 9 in the morning. People are stupid, ignorant, stubborn and ill educated in London, this is why it's a disaster on the roads when it's icy, snowy or just cold. So many accidents due to summer tires becoming harder and increasing breaking distance when temperature is below 7 degrees... It's just ridiculous!

Winter tyres aren't just for snowy conditions.. they're for when the temperature on the road is below freezing and up to 10C. Because summer tyres harden in cold conditions so they can't form a connection to the road properly.. hence whey they slip etc. winter tyres are made of a softer compound that flexes and the tread bonds better to the road surface. So winter tyres should be used between Nov - March. when the temperature is likely to be below 10 C.

It's not for just "one week a year" winter tyres are when the temperature is below zero and 10 C.. because summer tyres (regular tyres) work better when the temp is above 10 C and the roads are dry. Typically the temperatures between Nov & March are between below 0 C - 10 C. Are when winter tyres should be used. because cold weather hardens the rubber on summer tyres, hence less grip as the tyre is unable to form a good grip and bond to the road surface.
@pookitherat10 жыл бұрын
Oi, Lahndahn, may I suggest two lengths of rope in the boot? Tie them to a wheel spoke, then weave them over the tyre and back through the spokes until the tyre has a grippy rope tread. Move forward a bit to get the rest of the tyre and you will have enough grip to get you up most hills. Pretty sure there is a you tube video to show you how! Me? I have snow tyres, but then I live in the Highlands of Scotland so I expect cold weather. Dahn't be a muppet, get it sorted ;-p (in your best London geezer Micky Flanagan accent, which I love) Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

they need some Canadians to show them how to do it! LOL! But do they use winter tires there?? I don't know how often or much it snows over there.

Not worth the buying winter tyres sue, the UK doesn't get these conditions very often like Canada does. The UK weather in winter is kept mostly mild due to the gulf stream moving over the Atlantic ocean.

"trying to push the 2 ton car"... it doesn't work like that... it didn't matter if it's 1, 2 or 3 tons... one person can help... it just needs a tiny little bit of momentum to get moving once the tyres get grip.

obviously winter tyres is a must in these weather conditions but I can see a lack of skills of driving in snow,people spin wheels like they were driving on a dry asphalt!?, it is absolutely do-able to drive nice and steady up that hill even on summer tyres if you know how to do that,trust me
