@@heene I have all weather tires, and I live in England. It's not just about snow, but all weather tires and snow tires have a softer rubber compound than summer tires which gives you better grip (traction, braking) at temperatures below 7 degrees. How many days with temperatures below 7 degrees do we have per year in England? These things are common knowledge (or should be if you drive a car). By the way: your tire dealer should be able to store your summer or winter tires while not in use.

Regarding getting winter tyres, it isn’t always viable or cost effective, as the U.K. doesn’t get regular snow fall. The best option is to buy all season tyres and learn how to drive in the snow and ice, as proven in these videos very few drivers know how to.

@arthur_p_dent

That's totally fine - as long as the other 99% leave their car at home during said 3 hours, as opposed to driving under very dangerous and (thanks to their unsuitable tyres) extremely accident-prone conditions.

@@arthur_p_dent Most of them do. The trouble starts when it snows while they are at work and they then try to get home. If they would just wait a bit the gritters would be out and everybody would be happy (says a smug bloke with a 4 x 4 with all weather tyres😊).
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke Жыл бұрын
@@arthur_p_dent yeah, most people call in to work when it snows, and if they have no choice but to drive they'll stick to big main roads that have had the gritters out on them. People in small villages won't go out until the snow has cleared, let alone drive. Thankfully we don't really get snow though anymore, and on the rare occasion we do, it's usually melted by the afternoon, which incidentally is what causes all these issues on the roads as the slush is slippery.
@chrishartley1210
@chrishartley1210 Жыл бұрын
Simply not true about only 3 hours per year. Summer tyres should not be used when temperatures are consistently below about 8C, the rubber compound cannot cope and you are more likely to slide in wet weather or even dry weather below about 3C.
@arthur_p_dent
@arthur_p_dent Жыл бұрын
@@chrishartley1210 while I would be the last to downplay the importance of winter tyres in wintery conditions - this long held claim is simply a myth. Even at freezing point, summer tyres are better if there is no snow and ice. Of course, the moment there is the SLIGHTEST hint of snow or ice, winter tyres will be infinitely better, they will make all the difference between a car that is controllable and one that will cause expensive accidents. So I say: EVEN IF you need them only for 3 hours per year - they are still worth it. In my country, it is illegal to drive with summer tyres in snow and ice and you will be fined and earn traffic points if you do. Also, in the event of an accident, your liability insurance may get the money back from you because of your irresponsible behavior. If this happens even once, you may lose more money than you would otherwise spend on winter tyres in a lifetime.

I was fortunate in learning to drive in the late 60s.We got snow more often then and many young drivers had minis.The combination provided experience and fun driving.The advantage then was that most smaller cars were far less powerful than they are now.The rules are,drive in a higher gear than normal,do'nt accelerate or steer aggressively.leave a much greater distance to the vehicle in front .In a front wheel drive vehicle(better),put something heavy in the back of the vehicle.Brake with minimum force.Tyres with more cross tread will give better grip.
@arthur_p_dent
@arthur_p_dent Жыл бұрын
I think you got something wrong there. If your car has front wheel drive, you need the front to be heavy. Which it usually is, because in front is where the engine is. The extra weight in the trunk is for RWD cars with the engine in the front. I remember back in the 80s and early 90s when a sack of sand was standard winter equipment for BMW drivers who would struggle at certain hills when they were snowy - whereas a 2CV (front wheel driven of course) had no problem whatsoever.

I had a Citroen AX (my grandad’s previous car) and learnt to drive summer 2010. Come winter time and this car could get places others couldn’t even on fairly cheap tyres as it only weighed 650kg. I learnt how to drive in the snow with a lot of handbrake turns in big snowy car parks. What a blast, although even ‘small’ cars are regularly twice the weight now. Now driving a 480bhp rwd and for those snowy days that catch you out a set of snow chains work wonders! No replacement for winter tyres for most normal driving situations though!

Wholeheartedly agree with the "Keep your distance" but as someone who drives a RWD van on All season tyres years long, all i can say is the car in front usually gives you the clue they can't bloody drive and make it look really hard work. TL:DR, The car in front is usually driven by a bellend, distance is definitely your best friend I was in Buxton and Bakewell, Derbyshire during the big fall earlier this year and I got stuck precisely once...briefly, after a car tried to reverse park going uphill. I must have been half a mile away when she started, and stopped safely about 100m away, trouble is the whole road was uphill and i had to reverse to a kerb to get the traction to set off. Took her almost 5 minutes and properly knackered the road trying. The next time I would've got stuck, i stopped early on the flat. There was a Transit and a Zafira trying to get up this hill, it's a steep one, but the transit had been sliding up and down it for half an hour on bald summer tyres, and the Zafira driver had set off home early from a holiday as she was scared of driving in the snow and got stuck behind him.

In icy weather….as soon as practicable find a safe place and practice low speed (20 or less) dealing with slides, clutch and gear control, pulling away and getting used to stopping distances on ice. Looking at how the snow is falling, it doesn't appear to be windy. As my natural science teacher would say: "I would happily stand out in freezing conditions without clothes when there's no wind. Doing the same when there is a hard wind will cause you to lose body heat much quicker due to the transfer of heat in the form of giving it off on the colder air that keeps blowing around you." If you are pushing cars away one after the other, you are also bound to get hot. And next to that, I know people who have a body temperature or at least internal sense of it that makes them feel warm a lot.

You see these idiots flooring their big cars & wondering why they are just spinning the wheels & I love just cruising past them up the hills. Then you see them finally getting moving (Usually back down the hill) & they just slam on the brakes thinking it will stop them. It's so funny watching them sliding into walls etc & then driving past them. It never fails to surprise me when motorists get stuck because they are using summer tyres. I know UK doesn't regularly have snow and where it falls or how deep it's going to be. It's a regional lottery like now in Cumbria December 2023. Why don't driver's in the Autumn replace summer tyres with all season tyres to deal with wet roads, dry roads and snow. Yes they cost more but on the balance of probabilities your car will keep moving in the snow. If you know your car is two wheel drive, why take the risk on summer tyres when it snows. Too many people don't watch the weather forecast. It's a sad state of affairs that too many UK drivers get caught out through their own ineptitude.

Hopefully hats a joke. If not (or for those that don't get it) our AVERAGE temperatures are rising, and only by a few degrees. But that rise is enough that frozen ponds are only a couple of months a year, and rarely all day long, or for longer than a couple of days in a row... I'm afraid it is not. As the saying goes in the UK, If you do not like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change. We can go for many winters without much or any snow and even when it falls, can be gone in a few days. So it would be very expensive to invest in many snow ploughs, winter tyres etc, for them just to be used for a few days per decade. The main problems arise when there is snowfall during the day and everybody who has driven to work, now wants to drive home. Then you get the stupid people, those who go out in their vehicles, regardless of the snow or proper preparation, e.g. winter tyres (which are not really a thing in the UK)

It's not that it's not predictable. It's just that it doesn't snow much. And when it does it's usually a light flurry. The problem we have is our weather forecasters always give worst case scenario forecasts. So we tend to ignore warnings thinking we know better. I got caught out once. I now keep tyre chains in the car. But I've not had to use them yet.

Snow isn't as predictable in much of Europe. So what? In many countries, people simply put on winter tyres half of the year. And why not. Winter tyres are slightly inferior under normal conditions, but MASSIVELY better in snow or ice.Considering the cost of changing tyres vs the risk and cost of accidents, it is clear that even if you drive a total of LESS THAN ONE HOUR in snow and ice all winter, having the winter tyres on for 4-6 months will already have paid off.
@arthur_p_dent

@@MyJam1981 if you can afford to stay home and not drive your car in the event of snow and ice - then you don't need winter tyres. BUT - only then. If there is a possibility tat you might need to drive in wintery conditions - then you should ABSOLUTELY have winter tyres on. Even at the risk of driving them in non-wintery conditions 95% of the time. And I am sincerely hoping that British police do have winter tyres.

@@mertar3608 cheap isn't the problem. Old and/or worn down is. Winter tyres need to be replaced when the profile is less than 4 millimeters. Also, tyres tend to harden with age and should therefore be replaced after 7 years regardless of their profile. (that goes for summer tyres, too, especially on wet roads, old summer tyres can prove rather useless in the worst conceivable moments.) On the other hand, a cheap but fresh set of winter tyres may be slightly inferior to an expensive one, but it should be fine regardless. If you don't drive enough for your winter tyres to wear down in 7 years, you either put them on for longer, maybe up to 6 months each year, or simply go for all season tyres.

Planning a long way ahead. All those rear wheel drive BMW's are useless. You need traction. A bit of weight such as couple of bags of sand (or a mother in law) in the boot makes all the difference....

Here in England the temperature rarely drops below zero for more than a couple of hours. Snow is even more rare still. By the time people had arranged to have their tyres changed, the snow would have melted again. We've gone multiple years in a row without any snow at all, not even sleet or the thin stuff that doesn't ever settle. It mostly just rains. It's completely pointless here.

Sadly new driver have never really driven in snow when I learnt to drive had lessons even when it snowed but when it came to my test examiner said no too dangerous I had a days skid pan training as well. During the winter month's I carry two pairs of snow socks as the vehicles manufacturer states chains damage alloy wheels since my vehicle is four wheel drive, I agree with one comment about winter tyres where do you store them during the summer months and do you go to the expense of buy four new wheels when we rarely get serious amounts of snow in this country. My concern is the idiots who think that driving around in a vehicle that resembles a mobile Igloo is okay when the highway code states all snow should be cleared of the vehicle this is to prevent it coming off whilst the vehicle is moving as it could hit a vehicle or pedestrian and lights and number plates are visible, recently during the last snow fall I spotted a woman whose car only had the windscreen cleared but a good six inches covering the bonnet headlights and roof it was a convertible so what damage was being done to it.
