Regarding getting winter tyres, it isn’t always viable or cost effective, as the U.K. doesn’t get regular snow fall. The best option is to buy all season tyres and learn how to drive in the snow and ice, as proven in these videos very few drivers know how to.

Winter tyres aren’t just for the snow. Summer tyres are designed to operate at temperatures above 6 to 7 degrees so anywhere below that is winter tyre territory. Snow tyres have metal studs in them.

I was fortunate in learning to drive in the late 60s.We got snow more often then and many young drivers had minis.The combination provided experience and fun driving.The advantage then was that most smaller cars were far less powerful than they are now.The rules are,drive in a higher gear than normal,do'nt accelerate or steer aggressively.leave a much greater distance to the vehicle in front .In a front wheel drive vehicle(better),put something heavy in the back of the vehicle.Brake with minimum force.Tyres with more cross tread will give better grip.
@arthur_p_dent
@arthur_p_dent Жыл бұрын
I think you got something wrong there. If your car has front wheel drive, you need the front to be heavy. Which it usually is, because in front is where the engine is. The extra weight in the trunk is for RWD cars with the engine in the front. I remember back in the 80s and early 90s when a sack of sand was standard winter equipment for BMW drivers who would struggle at certain hills when they were snowy - whereas a 2CV (front wheel driven of course) had no problem whatsoever.

I had a Citroen AX (my grandad’s previous car) and learnt to drive summer 2010. Come winter time and this car could get places others couldn’t even on fairly cheap tyres as it only weighed 650kg. I learnt how to drive in the snow with a lot of handbrake turns in big snowy car parks. What a blast, although even ‘small’ cars are regularly twice the weight now. Now driving a 480bhp rwd and for those snowy days that catch you out a set of snow chains work wonders! No replacement for winter tyres for most normal driving situations though!

Looking at how the snow is falling, it doesn't appear to be windy. As my natural science teacher would say: "I would happily stand out in freezing conditions without clothes when there's no wind. Doing the same when there is a hard wind will cause you to lose body heat much quicker due to the transfer of heat in the form of giving it off on the colder air that keeps blowing around you." If you are pushing cars away one after the other, you are also bound to get hot. And next to that, I know people who have a body temperature or at least internal sense of it that makes them feel warm a lot.

@@heene I have all weather tires, and I live in England. It's not just about snow, but all weather tires and snow tires have a softer rubber compound than summer tires which gives you better grip (traction, braking) at temperatures below 7 degrees. How many days with temperatures below 7 degrees do we have per year in England? These things are common knowledge (or should be if you drive a car). By the way: your tire dealer should be able to store your summer or winter tires while not in use.

It's not that it's not predictable. It's just that it doesn't snow much. And when it does it's usually a light flurry. The problem we have is our weather forecasters always give worst case scenario forecasts. So we tend to ignore warnings thinking we know better. I got caught out once. I now keep tyre chains in the car. But I've not had to use them yet.
@arthur_p_dent
@arthur_p_dent Жыл бұрын
Snow isn't as predictable in much of Europe. So what? In many countries, people simply put on winter tyres half of the year. And why not. Winter tyres are slightly inferior under normal conditions, but MASSIVELY better in snow or ice.Considering the cost of changing tyres vs the risk and cost of accidents, it is clear that even if you drive a total of LESS THAN ONE HOUR in snow and ice all winter, having the winter tyres on for 4-6 months will already have paid off.
@arthur_p_dent
@arthur_p_dent Жыл бұрын
@@MyJam1981 if you can afford to stay home and not drive your car in the event of snow and ice - then you don't need winter tyres. BUT - only then. If there is a possibility tat you might need to drive in wintery conditions - then you should ABSOLUTELY have winter tyres on. Even at the risk of driving them in non-wintery conditions 95% of the time. And I am sincerely hoping that British police do have winter tyres.
@MyJam1981
@MyJam1981 Жыл бұрын
@@arthur_p_dent Totaly agree but the cost of buying a full set of tires for a small car would be around £200+ and i take it winter ones would cost more. Ontop of that would be the mechanics fee as very few can change there own wheels. Then you got the storage of 4x wheels small houses and gardens so storage is a problem. most people just take a day off work if its that bad the only ones complaining is the work place as we all know they have our best interests and health in mind 🤣 when they still expect you to put your life at risk to sit at there desk or whatever. It never fails to surprise me when motorists get stuck because they are using summer tyres. I know UK doesn't regularly have snow and where it falls or how deep it's going to be. It's a regional lottery like now in Cumbria December 2023. Why don't driver's in the Autumn replace summer tyres with all season tyres to deal with wet roads, dry roads and snow. Yes they cost more but on the balance of probabilities your car will keep moving in the snow. If you know your car is two wheel drive, why take the risk on summer tyres when it snows. Too many people don't watch the weather forecast. It's a sad state of affairs that too many UK drivers get caught out through their own ineptitude.

Wholeheartedly agree with the "Keep your distance" but as someone who drives a RWD van on All season tyres years long, all i can say is the car in front usually gives you the clue they can't bloody drive and make it look really hard work. TL:DR, The car in front is usually driven by a bellend, distance is definitely your best friend I was in Buxton and Bakewell, Derbyshire during the big fall earlier this year and I got stuck precisely once...briefly, after a car tried to reverse park going uphill. I must have been half a mile away when she started, and stopped safely about 100m away, trouble is the whole road was uphill and i had to reverse to a kerb to get the traction to set off. Took her almost 5 minutes and properly knackered the road trying. The next time I would've got stuck, i stopped early on the flat. There was a Transit and a Zafira trying to get up this hill, it's a steep one, but the transit had been sliding up and down it for half an hour on bald summer tyres, and the Zafira driver had set off home early from a holiday as she was scared of driving in the snow and got stuck behind him.

On the other hand, a cheap but fresh set of winter tyres may be slightly inferior to an expensive one, but it should be fine regardless. Use second gear to start when it snows. It stops too much torque on the tyres. I should add that this only applies to petrol engines. I don’t know about diesel.

Here in Norway we have this marvellous invention called "winter tyres". We couldn't survive in the winter without them! I hope someone will tip off the British about these some day. They do make a lot of difference in the winter.
@mydogeatspuke

Here in England the temperature rarely drops below zero for more than a couple of hours. Snow is even more rare still. By the time people had arranged to have their tyres changed, the snow would have melted again. We've gone multiple years in a row without any snow at all, not even sleet or the thin stuff that doesn't ever settle. It mostly just rains. It's completely pointless here.

Most people don’t realise that the difference between summer and winter tyres in conditions like this is enormous. Summer tyres are USELESS. For the majority of cars, quality all season tyres like Michelin CrossClimate or Goodyear Vector 4Seasons are the best all year choice.

Love the Range Rover...As I always say, 4 wheel drive cars can still slide. Especially when the brakes are locked on. The only way to drive in snow and ice is slowly and carefully. Planning a long way ahead. All those rear wheel drive BMW's are useless. You need traction. A bit of weight such as couple of bags of sand (or a mother in law) in the boot makes all the difference....

The ignorance about tyres in this country is amazing. Winter tyres aren't just for snow, they're for when the temperature drops below 7 degrees, so most of the country could use winter tyres for 4-5 months of the year. Obviously it isn't cheap to get a second set of wheels so why not switch to all-season tyres when your summer tyres wear down?

The problem in the clip is that these cars don't have proper snow tyres. With a set of these, driving a BMW in snow is no problem at all. With normal summer tyres, on the other hand, even driving a 4x4 in snow can be dangerous.
@gin9991
@gin9991 Жыл бұрын
@@arthur_p_dent Exactly as Winter/All season tyres are not just about traction they are also about being able to stop, a 4x4 on summer tyres may have a bit better traction than a 2 wheel drive but it won’t stop any better , probably worse ,as 4x4’s tend to be heavier.
@begudmaximan953

Vehicle wheels unprepared for slippery snow and ice conditions as per usual. Normal tyres will struggle and fail miserably without additional help of some grip to aid traction adhesion. Time after time we see this and no one ever learns! Virtually no one has light duty chains and that's why we see so many avoidable mishaps when the going gets snowy tough!

Sadly new driver have never really driven in snow when I learnt to drive had lessons even when it snowed but when it came to my test examiner said no too dangerous I had a days skid pan training as well. During the winter month's I carry two pairs of snow socks as the vehicles manufacturer states chains damage alloy wheels since my vehicle is four wheel drive, I agree with one comment about winter tyres where do you store them during the summer months and do you go to the expense of buy four new wheels when we rarely get serious amounts of snow in this country. My concern is the idiots who think that driving around in a vehicle that resembles a mobile Igloo is okay when the highway code states all snow should be cleared of the vehicle this is to prevent it coming off whilst the vehicle is moving as it could hit a vehicle or pedestrian and lights and number plates are visible, recently during the last snow fall I spotted a woman whose car only had the windscreen cleared but a good six inches covering the bonnet headlights and roof it was a convertible so what damage was being done to it.

It's just common sense to let 40% of Air out your tyres. It gives you an easy 30% more traction and control in snow!! Think about it' it widens your tyres so you have more surface area to the ground. I do it every year and not lost control yet. When everyone around me couldn't get up a 25 degree road and I went up it no problem with wtf look on everyone's face stuck at the bottom of the road. Come on guys! It's common sense.

Never used snow tires myself & we get worse snow than this almost every year in the North West. Just drive slower Try to use gears to slow you more rather than just braking & never think that masses of power will somehow get your tires to grip when going up any sort of hill. Seeing these idiots makes me laugh so much I think Winter has to be the happiest time of year😃

It's a well known fact that people in this country can't drive in snow because they lack the intelligence to drive to the conditions ie if driving conditions are poor slow down and keep a good distance from the vehicle in front instead the halfwits who fill the roads drive flat out all the time and tailgate at every opportunity, and the amount of people who try and pull away in snow with the accelerator welded to the floor is amazing these people truly are the missing link
