This is fantastic news! I'm 51 and had my left hip replaced 5 years ago. Wear has been a concern for me because I'm a martial artist/kickboxer, runner and I do a lot of hiking. I was told at the time that the new HXPE inserts were so good that they didn't know how long they would last. But knowing that even at a high impact and activity level, it will likely last the rest of my life definitely allows me more confidence.

Thank you so much Dr. Yun. I live in Japan and had hip replacement done here in 2019. Before the surgery I was told it would last 15 years. After that, sharing experiences with an American friend who had the same surgery, was surprised to hear that he was told his would last a lifetime. I was 65 in 2019 and my friend had his surgery a couple years before mine. I recently came across your video by chance, after which I started to look into the reason why my friend was told a lifetime and I was told 15 years. My artificial hip is made in USA and I discovered that its liner too is cross-linked polyethylene. But surgeons here in Japan are still advising patients according to pre-XLPE times. You can imagine what a relief it is to know my hip too will likely last as long as I do.

@ My surgery was performed at Orthoindy which is a hospital in central Indiana. The people there are great. I feel I was told positive things about the operation because a patient should go into an operation feeling things will be better afterward. I have had additional issues not common to most. I experienced a much greater infection. I am 5 weeks post-op. I still have a lot of pain and stiffness in the muscle. I am just today able to walk with one cane. I do exercise daily and go to physical therapy twice a week. I feel I will still have stiffness and some pain for another 5 weeks or more. I do see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would do it all over again but would have a more realistic expectation of healing time.

Fascinating. I’m a former dancer and was wondering if there is an engineering solution that avoids metal on metal technology, that is in development that embraces the current successful practices of a total hip replacement but with a design feature of the metal component in the hip joint that allows a greater range of movement in the limb that enables dancers to continue their careers as choreographers on a low impact basis?
