6+ years out and am biking 80 miles per week. Three months after a very successful hip replacement I went down on the ice in our driveway and fractured the femur on the leg with the hip replacement. What a nightmare. My advice is 1) If you’re overweight, lose weight. 2) Treat your PT like it’s a full time job I’m now 69 and working towards a 70 mile ride to celebrate my 70th birthday Best of health to all
@V8blueКүн бұрын
Yikes! That happened to my mom and her femur shattered around the new hip’s spike that went into the bone. Fortunately the surgeon was able to piece it back together like a puzzle and wrapped it tight. Held up until her death many years later.

As a fellow physical therapist who treats many patients right after total knee and hip replacement surgery I can tell you that the glutes are one of the most undertrained muscle groups. I also use the clam exercise as a starting point for my patients and then eventually transition them to a standing hip abduction to get them comfortable with starting to put weight on their leg again! I always remind people to train BOTH sides to keep their hip stability and strength balanced. Thanks again for this great information Will! Keep up the great work in helping our patients!

I had both hips replaced and it was never suggested that I do an exercises to strengthen my glutes. In fact, at a follow up after my first hip replacement the surgeon told me my glute muscles were weak but offered no advice. Furthermore, neither of the 2 surgeons explained why we don't have the same range of movement after the operation or that it is permanent. If you check on the internet, all that is available is information for the first few months post surgery. I would love an answer to question of reduced range of movement.

Hi Will. It has been 7 years since hip replacement. First 2 years great. Been having hip pain..lower back pain and butt pain for 5 years. Many steriod injections still in pain. Now they talking SI fusion. Not doing that. I will be consistent with exercise and hope they help. Only thing cant get on floor for bridges. Cant do them on bed. Gonna get myself a table. I am 66 and got a lot of living to do. This pain is stopping me from doing things. Praying this works❤

I'm 12 months post-Anterior Total Hip Replacement, and I can say the results far exceeded my expectations. Besides having a world-class surgeon, and a post-surgery physical therapist that was next-to-none, they both gave me the best advice I could have ever received. First, about an hour after waking up from the surgery, my surgeon had me out of bed walking up and down the hospital corridors with the aid of a walker. It was out-patient surgery, so several hours later I was on my way home. My surgeon was adamant that approx. 4-5 weeks PRIOR to surgery, that I go through a series of exercises to strengthen my glutes, hamstrings, quads, etc, and it helped 100%. He said the stronger you are before the surgery in those areas, the easier post-surgery will be. The PT also put me through a series of exercises including those mentioned by Will in this video, and I did them twice a day, religiously. In 3 days I was able to put the walker away, and only used a cane. 9 days after that I was walking normal without any aids at all. 9 weeks to the day after my surgery, I was back on the tennis court playing doubles, gingerly, of course, but gradually I got all my leg and hip strength back. Follow Mr. Harlow's advice and do these exercises prior to and after the surgery. You'll be so glad you did.

I don't know if that would happen if you had Complete Knee surgery . Knee surgery is one of the hardest, painful , surgery out there . I believe hip surgery "alittle" easier and it all depends on how old you are . There's a lot of things factor into all these surgeries. In the near future I might need a Hip surgery and I know for a fact , I will need 2 complete Knee surgeries . And you have to remember Everyone situation with pain , and anything else , aren't all the same . This is what I had read , spoke to people who had hip and knee surgeries. Everyday for several years, I have been doing alot of reading , asking questions , spoke to Physical Therapist about all this . I even spoke to , two Orthopedic surgeon. I am NOT disagreeing with you, I am only saying , what I had done for research, etcccc.

@@debbiec6216my Total Knee Replacement, my first surgery, was in hindsight, a wonderful, excellent event. The American Kaiser group provided superb team management, excelling at post-op physical therapy! Five years later, a hip replacement was far less than satisfactory….16 months, and still recovering. Mostly, this is due to loss of muscle strength. Highly aggressive fitness center work is finally restoring the glutes, just as Will Shows us in his video. My legs are rapidly growing, using these exercises and various other exercises as well. 👍

I agree. Had total hip replacement five years ago with stellar surgeon and an amazing physical therapist with similar post op (walking hours after surgery, graduating from walker to cane, etc) Do the work and you will be rewarded with a successful surgery result. I have no limitations. Can touch the floor, full squats, work in the garden and use the rowing machine. I’m 80 years old. Get a good surgeon, do all the pt exercises and you’ll be happy with the results

I had just completed a two hour skating session, relatively incident free. I also keep up with ballet barre exercises, and get compliments on the shape of my glutes despite my age. In rehab I was able to take stairs the first time the P.T. asked me to attempt them.

I have a friend who has experienced the same symptoms after her bilateral replacements. It did not happen after the first replacement, just the second, the same with her. I exercise in the pool 5 days a week doing water walking. Any ideas? Seems like a proprioception issue to me. I would welcome your input. Love your channel. Thanks. Nancy Watkins

I've never had Bursitis before but I developed some bad upper leg Bursitis about 3 months after my 2nd hip replacement. This has been almost as painful as pre-replacement and certainly has restricted my mobility. My doctor advised me to stop doing any hip replacement exercises until the bursitis settles down so as not to cause further inflamation. I was given a cortisone shot and while thi helped, it did not seem to last very long. After 4 months I'm about to get my 3rd shot so hopefully this will bring the inflamation down to where I can start using your excersise tips. In the meantime, I do see what you've mentioned regarding extra pain in both my knee and lower back. Thanks for you tips and I hope I can use these soon. Cheers.

thank you for this information. Following my hip replacement I found the glute exercises very painful most of the time. Also had terrible sciatica. When I went back to surgeon for follow up, he explained he had to peel some of my end of my glute of the bone (femur) and then reattach. So it all made sense while so painful. But 7 weeks on healing well and the pain has gone and sciatica is improving.

Brilliant Will, was given these exercises, plus resistance band for clam and bridge, and told to push navel into mat to work the core doing the bridge as well as buttocks squeeze which was helpful, also physio noticed my operated leg remained weaker so doing more reps with the clam on that side and extra pulling on band tied around the leg of a table ... it's taken frankly a really long time at my age plus additional injuries still things are progressing (also sit to stand excellent but that's not glutes I know.) I agree with most peoples comments, very good exercises. But do warn people that they may not be able to raise their legs even an inch if you’re glutes have been so destroyed in the operation. IT takes a lot of patience and will power until you lift your knees and legs as you suggest, especially right after the operation.
