It's crazy the way that placing the samples under a microscope reveals so much. Definitely next level documentation for sure. Great video and by the way, live the Meateater book in your desk.☺👍

Was the 6th of April immediately after the culture was made and the sample was at 78 degrees? If this sample was slowly heated to 78 degrees would the phyto begin to move? I think the process just slows down in the dark refrigerator. A drop of F2 and a little light and those boys would be kickin again!

Would be intresting to see if an acclimation to 78 degrees would make a diffrence in activity. Oh and my shipment of phyto was kicking.

Hey Travis, I've harvested my first batch on the 10th day. I separated them into 2 separate sterilized containers into the refrigerator. I come to grab something out of the refrigerator and saw that separation at the surface you were talking about in the beginning. Why would that be? I know it might be hard to pinpoint exactly why from your perspective. ( could have been an error on my part) but, figured that separation as it got older. This was a fresh 10th day batch... nice color in the container too. Any help is appreciated.

Its just settling. Give it a shake every day or every couple of days. Yes it will settle even if it is a new batch.
@NanoJoe
@NanoJoe 4 жыл бұрын
@@DogFacePuffa cool cool. I figured so it was settling. I was scared because it did look like it had an oil look inside surface. I'll continue to shake. Still looks healthy and doesn't smell bad.

What species of phytoplankton are you using in this video?

Appears to be Tetraselmis based on size, shape and motility.

@@neilphillips3193 On the website it says: My personal Nannochloropsis Phytoplankton made in house using RO/DI water. I dose 50ml every other day to the 500 gallon system. I find that phytoplankton helps promote better polyp extension, stronger acropora and faster growth. So they are: Nannochloropsis ?
@neilphillips3193

Julian Diaz that ID is currently being verified but those in the video are definitely not nannochloropsis.
@sork.5988

Pretty sure its a tetraselmis and no nannochlaropsis. Nannochlaropsis doesnt move like this, tetraselmis does.

@@juliandiaz44 if its Nannochloropsis it is non flangelea and in fact reduces nitrates which contradicts the video indicating it increases nutrients....

Nannocloropsis phyto are 2-4 micron. Compare this to the micron size of your filter sock.
@neilphillips3193
@neilphillips3193 4 жыл бұрын
These appear to be Tetraselmis, so around 5-8 microns. Check the pore size on your socks

Adam H. These aren’t Nannochloropsis though. These are obviously highly motile, and Nannochloropsis isn’t mobile- they literally don’t possess the flagella required for movement
