What's happening? Been subbed for a while and I've been legit thinking about starting an ork army. What would be a good way of starting to get a decent base? I really like the idea of commandos and shenanigans in the battlefield, is there anyhting htat fits that?

@@Rundvelt Absolutely! Orks have Kommandos, a unit that fits exactly what you want, and you can take 3 of them. For more shenanigans, look at taking Deffkoptaz, Weirdboys, and Shokkjump Dragstas. I'd start with the Ork Combat Patrol box set and a box of Kommandos.

@Rundvelt they are but you can't really go wrong with loadout anymore because wargear is free! That said, any specific build out questions on options I'm happy to answer.

As a fellow hobbyist that enjoys building the most, I’ve done all options when it comes to building the whole box then painting, going unit by unit, and trying to build a whole army then painting the whole army. I find that my motivation is best when go unit by unit. I’ll typically have 2-4 units at any point in my process and work on either the unit I want to finish the most till I’m done or I’ll work on the process I most want to work on that day. I find if I get more units built than 2-4 I start getting overwhelmed and feel unmotivated as I can’t see as much progress as quick. Just my 2 cents, love the channel!

There's no wrong way to do it! I should have clarified that the whole army first was for doing a *new* army. All my current armies that have established paint schemes get 1-2 units at a time.

Let’s go! I’m so ready for this series. Can’t wait to travel the same path at the start of the new year. On the topic of completing wn army: I’ve always thought that the building part doesn’t take so long. Oh boy, I was so wrong. I built de Dark Vengeance box back in the day, it took me a whole day to do it. Later I built the original Necromunda box and timed myself. I built that set to my highest standard, and it took more than 12 hours. I’m still contemplating how I’m going to this for my Beast Snaggas. Will I build it all and then paint it? Or should I go in batches? I don’t want me to burn myself out on the army. So it’ll have to evolve naturally.

Honestly this box is so varied that it should be fun to just build out. 10 boyz, 4 squig riders, the Beastboss, and the Kill Rig. They are all different and not too big of units.

I’d recommend magnetizing Mozrog and the Boss on Squig! It’s very easy to do at their waist and would be a good tutorial.

As someone with a fulltime career, bills, a gf, and other hobbies, it is a challenge to find time to sit down for a few hours to work on an army, or even just a unit. 2023 I dedicated most of my hobby time to tackling my necron army. I wanted to have an actual army I could play with for 10th edition, combat patrol and killteam. Before then I only had roughly 500 points of necrons and am currently now at 2.3k points. After finishing what I have left to complete this month Ill have around 2.7k points which pretty much means it took me a whole year to complete 2k points worth of models and Im not mad at that. I see these YT army challenges where hobbiest paint an army in a week or 48 and 24 hours challenges and I just dont think I have that in me or the time unless I really took the time away from work and my adult life to dedicate that.

Heck no dude, that is content creator stuff that's great for them to get clicks etc, but that ain't for us regular people, I work 60+ hours a week, have a homestead, guitar practice, family, and have a massive archery hobby I'm into, but I work from roughly 1500 til 0230 in the morning, and spending a couple hours after work before bed gluing and painting while listening to music or a sporting event is a perfect way to wind down, it's going to take me years to finish my AdMech army, but then again, I don't mind, I kind of dread the day it's finished...means no more hobbying with them

@johnhildenbrand2642 luckily for you an army is never done! I built my first ork in 1997 and still have thousands of points left to build. And I'm with you 100%, building stuff is my way to chill out.

And well an army is never finished, especially as GW continues to make new models for factions year after year. Even though Ad Mech only got one new model, I have a feeling theyll get a few more this edition you can add to your backlog haha

Only exception for building before painting for me is two handed guns. I always try to paint the torsos before putting the arms on, otherwise it's just a pain

i got 8 different 40k armies and 3 AoS armies. and i can say there is a big difference in how easy the models are to build. SM they are the poster boys and are easy to build so good for new players, Necrons that i really like i would NOT recommend for new players to build, though they are easy to play with. BUT for new players a good advise is go for what you like the look at, then you can easier keep at it instead of going for that that are the best atm and will change all the time.

I've been working on my first army (Necrons) for the better half of the last 6 months and have around 500 points mounted, not even primed. Been working on a single Canoptek Wraith for more than 1 month. Usually can't get more than 30m a day, 2-3 days a week. Is fun and alright :) one day they'll be done and I'll be proud. But the experience is making me really think about commissioning my Genestealer Cult combat patrol, because that will take me 5 years 😂

Another benefit of building all the models before painting is that you can play with them unpainted. It allows you to get a better understanding on how they behave on the battlefield and allows you to get inspiration. Ex. if your unpainted warboss managed to wipe out an entire ultramarine squad one could lean into it and put some ultramarine bits on the warboss or the base.

Yes and no. Beastsnaggas aren't feral, they all have cybork limbs, and they are called beast snaggas because they hunt the biggest things on the battlefield, including tanks. Grots aren't going to hunt anything on their own, but also the Squighogs have grot back seat riders. So you can kind of go either way. I'd love to see a squad of Beastsnagga Nobs and a Beastsnagga Waaaaagh Banner myself.
