Dr. Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and has been in recovery from opioid use himself since 1984, responds to viewer questions about how long on long it takes to get your energy back after opioid withdrawal. Regardless of the detox method someone uses, there is the possibility of Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS), with symptoms like low energy and insomnia.
-Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 14 cities across the US.
-3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA, Wellesley, MA (Boston area) and Willoughby, OH (Cleveland area) includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Rapid Benzodiazepine Detox.
-Caring, Empathetic Environment
Dr. Peter Coleman understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

I was in a state of crippling depression and no energy for 9 months after detoxing off fentanyl... and I ended up reaching out for help. I was placed on the lowest dose 4mg. Of suboxone... and I now feel normal.

@@bigdaddysbaked you might benefit from suboxone... I was not a fan of suboxone... but in the end, it has been life changing for me... most people take 8mg twice daily but I only take 4mg once daily... Best wishes to you😊

That subuxone must be strong stuff... when I went to rehab I was put on 16mg of subutex under tongue pills and it made me normal... You are saying you was detoxing from fentanyl 🤔 I was addicted to a regular brown heroine with 1-1.5g habit a day.. I have tried first 8mg of subutex but it almost didn't worked.. So I'm just wondering if your habit was just a little one or if the subuxone is much stronger than subutex. Well done for You. I'm now on 1.2mg of subutex and I keep tapering 0.4mg every 1-2months to make it go smoothly 🎉

@tonitucciarone9197 also with dosing in the UK they advise to use subutex once daily in the morning full dose, but when I was tapering I was using in example 8mg in the morning and if it didn't work quite well I was adding 0.4-0.8mg in the afternoon or sometimes it was kicking in the middle of the night with that weird legs pain then I was taking just 0.4mg and it was helping me go back to sleep 😴

My experience is that I feel great for a few weeks after the acute withdrawal. Then the post acute withdrawal kicks in. Apparently it can take 2 years before you feel back to normal after quitting opiates, but it's different for everyone, and the suffering is intermittent, not constant, thank God.

Joe Rogan had a doctor on his pod recently that is addiction specialist and brain expert along with an ex MMA fighter. Both showed research that stated that men are tired during and after withdrawal bc they have extreme low levels testosterone.

I am going through the same thing. I was clean for 3 years before relapsing and now I'm a week into being clean again. The sickness is worse than I ever experienced with heroin. Fentanyl is no joke

I was on morphine for one year due to a broken hip and multiple surgeries. I didnt abuse it but my body was very dependent for sure. I got pregnant and decided with my GP to stop taking it. She advices a tapering but I wanted to stop right away. I was physical unwell for 5-7 days and after 3 weeks I had my normal energy back. Sweating was my longest withdrawal symptom and lasted for about 3 weeks as well. Today I have been off for 3 months and for the last many weeks I feel absolutely normal and my hip is not better nor worse.

I had a 7 year oral morphine habit. I used Kratom to stop instantly but I then had to taper down from 10 to 12g leaf powder per day. I asked ChatGPT for a tapering schedule and it more or less got me down to 3 g/day...then I jumped to ZERO. 3 icky days followed, then I could sleep again. Of course the pain I was treating is back... in spades. Life is a joke really. Choose life, have a laugh

Hello. Just a question (or a few) on partial agonists like buprenorphine. When in the final stages of tapering of bup, the withdrawal seems to be just as bad as cold turkey heroin or other long term use of full agonists. Is the reason for this being that buprenorphine has a much larger affinity than heroin, and others? I had the impression that was the case, but a local dr said that has nothing to do with it? And I can't seem to find the case study, (maybe Dr Bonner) but I read somewhere that in the final stages of tapering bup, it has shown switching to a weaker, full agonist like codeine or hydrocodone, if monitored and coupled with other therapies can have a smoother transition completely off opiates. Just curious. Thank you for your time.

I’ve come off heroin, methadone and suboxone years ago. If you’re feeling withdrawal symptoms on par with cold turkey from heroin, you’re taper’s too harsh. You should feel very mild symptoms if you do it low and slow. Methadone, for example, I felt pretty much nothing when I tapered to the bottom. I had symptoms after a week weeks, but that was post-acute WD. Suboxone’s easier to come off than methadone, but there’s still some symptoms. The lack of sleep’s a bitch, but there’s things you can do to help it.

I’m 9 months off hydrocodone for back pain and surgery, never abused. Also been taking suboxone for 9 months. I have absolutely no energy and have a hard time focusing. I have no desire to do the things I used to do. I sleep way too much, always fatigued, nit much appetite. Sleep has no pattern. I don’t know if it’s still detoxing or side effects from the SubX. Could it be both? Help! Thanks. 🙏🏼✌🏼
