No man, choppers ride very nicely if built correctly, and they turn great at speed! Maybe even better feeling than my sport bike BUT they don't handle well when going slow and abrupt turns or quick stops on sandy roadway. I've owned one for years and it started as my second bike and now I ride it most often because of the comfort and feel.

@uncountedvoter9449 lol no they don't
@BETA0000911 ай бұрын
@@uncountedvoter9449 that doesn’t make since. A lower seat hight should mean worse turns. Hence why sport bikes have a high seat height so they can turn better.
@babayaga-j3f11 ай бұрын
@@BETA00009Seat height has nothing to do with it, it's down to front end suspension geometry and tyre size. The more you rake forks out, the front wheel becomes less able to steer.

We actually built these @ Britt Motorsports (defunct since 2012) during an East Coast U.S "bar hopper phase". About $50k USD until the bubble burst in '06. They were comfortable enough around town, but the seat pan was hand laid fiberglass over "cling film". Rob Connelly welded our frames and the stretched front, while attractive - was not conducive to comfort on the long haul. I just kept riding my YZF 1000 (Thunderace) anyway, but this was an actual era in America.

Meanwhile in the states, we've figured out a long time ago choppers are better for their appearance than actually being ridden.

I mean I wouldn’t say that. A chopper on the highway is a pretty comfy ride. You’re laid back, and cruising.

I was a motorcycle mechanic at a Honda dealership back in the 70s when choppers were the latest craze. I also did state safety inspections that were required annually here in Pennsylvania. A local motorcycle club member brought in his Honda 750, he wanted the engine to have a race bike hop up kit, cam, valve, springs, special pistons bore job,exhaust, hot coils . it was a kit you could buy for the two valve single cam 750 engine. It was the 810 cc kit. We did the engine.. The guy weighed something like 380 pounds, and he needed the power boost to keep up with the other riders in his club…mostly kawasaki 903s.. when he brought the bike into the shop. They had an old United parcel delivery van size truck/van as their Chase vehicle, and for transporting the bikes. That motorcycle was chopped, and it was so loooongg, that they had to remove one of the back doors on that truck so the Front wheel could stick out the back door about 18 inches, with the rear wheel, touching a backstop even with the back of the drivers seat. It is the longest chopper I have ever seen. The Honda dealership I worked has one of the other mechanics do the engine 810 kit install, I think it was Eric, ( eric buell-yes- that eric). but When the engine was finished and reinstalled, no one would test ride it to tune it.. it was difficult just to move around in the service department.. Then there was the state inspection that it was there for also.. I would not put a sticker on that, neither would any of the other seven mechanics, because It did not meet the regulations. It wasn’t safe. The handlebars were way longer than acceptable by the specs , and he didn’t even have a front wheel brake… we told him, we can’t do it, we can’t put a inspection sticker on your bike.. so, however, long it is in a united parcel service van, add about 18 inches to that, that’s how long this chopper was. by the way, the owner of the bike was killed on that bike. About a year later, he was a fourth grade school, teacher, and on the side he was a drug dealer. That was back around 1974..

Thanks for sharing such a cool and detailed story. I’m from that era and knew many a biker to keep their choppers in their living rooms or even kitchens! I personally had a 1969 Triumph Bonnevile 650 with 18” over Franks Forks on a hard tail frame. I swear my front wheel would almost hit the other side of a turn while my back wheel barely missed the curb! It was fukn scary! But loved that thing!

I was getting my motorcycle license, and you had to go around this painted circle without putting your feet on the ground. A woman showed up with her boyfriend’s Harley chopper, but not too long of forks. I felt so sorry for her. She kept dropping it. The shifter and paint job were getting pretty messed up. The instructor told her to go rent a small motorcycle. She could pass the test on that, then ride the chopper from then on. Her boyfriend must have been pissed when she came home.
