Dear Valued Teacher, It's a great effort on your part to make a video. I really appreciate your class, your knowledge. I'm from Bolivia. My native tongue is Spanish. I agree with you. Learning a language is a "journey". Take care!! Best regards, Isaac Rojas.

Isaac, Thank you for writing. Your message is helpful. I appreciate your support. This channel exists because of my gratitude for the input which I was able to find in Spanish to allow me to acquire that language. Of course my Spanish journey is ongoing. Also, this channel has an e-mail address if you like. Joseph

... English can be extremely challenging. Mastering phrasal verbs is a complex task, and pronunciation can be perplexing. The mismatch between spelling and sound is daunting, particularly mastering vowel reductions like the schwa. Despite these difficulties, the beauty of English, both in speech and song, makes it a captivating language. Thank you, Joseph ... !!!

I absolutely agree. I see Comprehensible Input as the only way that I would take on such a perplexing language.

There is a science to learning naturally. Children learn by seeing and doing. Whereas the written word is an abstraction and more difficult to remember. Start with learning to say everything in your house in the new language. Then leave your house and learn to say everything you see. Then start putting the language to use in simple everyday tasks…shopping and eating in a restaurant are good places to start. Having physical imagery for each noun, verb and adjective. Repetition is how we make the words our own. Lots and lots of repetition. Learning a language is like learning to play an instrument. Remember…children learn to speak before they learn to read and write. Until 200 years ago, the vast majority of people were illiterate and could not read or write, yet they could still learn new languages. It’s how humans have evolved to learn.

I started to learn English 3.5 years ago, after 40s it is really difficult to learn, for me the question is that which part of English and which accent? I've focused on listening and reading because of my circumstances however I don't know how I can improve output skills effectively without living in English speaking countries.

Good for you. First, do not worry about your age. i was over 60 when I learned Spanish. It is not an issue because we have no way to change our age. It is what it is. I would forget age and proceed. Second, it really does not matter which accent you use as input. Whatever accent you listen to the most will be featured in your pronunciation. When I studied Spanish, I focused on the accent of Spain because I like it and I will be traveling to Spain in the future. My accent as I speak on these videos is an accent of the United States without any specific regional identification. Third, you are in the right place. I have a lot of videos on how to learn English. Many of them are in a play list and others are just mixed in with the other 120+ videos. Your situation is ideal. I would watch videos, like these until you are comfortable listening to podcasts. Consider audiobooks. Lots of listening input. If you have perhaps 1000 hours of input, start reading. That reading could be books, Kindle or audiobooks. I cannot tell what your original language is. If you don't mind saying, that detail will help to predict the rate of acquisition. Where are you writing from?

@@comprehendeng Thank you for your kind answer, My mother tongue is Turkish. And I am gradefull to say that last week I've started to learn Spanish as well, Of course I'll keep learning English at the same time. I want to say that English is an easy language at The begening of A1 to B1 level however between B2-C1 level is really tough for me and other language learners. I've gotten stuck there. And my way of learning is diffirent method, I 've started with general English after Academic English and nowadays I' m reading Medical English books so I believe that all of this English parts are different from each other and a new challenge.Good like for your spanish and Thank you for your attention

@@alaneldira9578 Given the difference between Turkish and English it will take a lot of input. Think in terms of 2000-3000 or more hours total. This of course does not take into consideration what you have already done. I have spent 6 weeks in Turkey, years ago. I only know a few polite phrases. Its a fascinating language. For Spanish, I expect that you know about Dreaming Spanish. Pablo is the reason that I started this channel. When you are ready, there are several great podcasts in Spanish which are for learners. Thanks for writing back.

You are confused about whether the definition is learning your second language or training your ears to adjust to the sound of another language. A child is stuck at a certain level of proficiency in a second language after school. If he doesn't begin to use his second language in that linguistic environment, he will eventually begin to sink with the words of his second language. When I was 16 years old, I stopped learning my second language, Russian, and at the same age I stopped learning my native language, Latvian. That was the age when I had to decide what I was going to do in the future. After 30 years of not using my second language, Russian, my writing skills in that language were very bad at the beginning. I received a lot of hatred from Russians about my poor knowledge of their native language. Getting your ears used to the sound of another language is another story, you are happy to hear this unknown language. I am jealous of people who have the patience to listen to the sound that you only partially understand.

Thank you for that perspective. I own the fact that I am not a guru or a super expert. Opinions may differ. I try to give advice for people using my input so that they can learn efficiently. It is my hope that what I am doing here will help people. It is analogous to the content and advice which allowed me to learn Spanish. The recommendations on this channel come from the work of Stephen Krashen, Marvin Brown and Pablo Román.

@@comprehendeng Russia has 160 million people, Latvia has 2 million people. So they have more money to spend on creating viewable content in their language. In my childhood, I had two TV channels. One of them was in Russian. After school, reading books in Russian (they have more books) and watching content in Russian every day, but all this didn't save my writing skills in this language. The problem with Krashen is that he doesn't live on the ground, he talks about the imaginary world.

My concern is that even after 10000 or 2000 hours of a foreign language input I still have a great difficulty to undrstand a film or a TV serie as the linguistic form is completelly different. I don't have any problem to understand what you say, except some new words, but a I have a great difficulty to understand series such as '' The office'' or other films.

This is normal. I am the same way with popular series in Spanish. These series have lots of slang, cultural references and the speaking is very fast. I find, that for me, it gets easier with time and more input. I cannot speed it up. It will come. I know exactly what you are saying. I am living it right now.
