Jim another informative job. I am intrigued by lithium batteries. I don't need 200 amp hours. 100 would work for me. I have read that having two lead batteries make the batteries work better. Does that apply to lithium too? Also if I wanted to add a second battery after a year or two is that ok with lithium batteries. It's recommended to buy 2 lead batteries at the same time. batteries.

You can just replace it and it will work. However, lead acid batteries charge to 13.6 volts and lithium charges to 14.6. Your charger will work but you won't get a completely full charge on your new battery. You will need a new charger that can charge up to 14.6 volts.

Great video! I’m a noob and my camper trailer came with deep cycle battery and I’m thinking I should upgrade it soon... my question is can I just get Lithium Iron battery and just swap it with regular deep cycle battery? I know there are different charging set ups for Lithium Iron batteries, mppt this and that...(not quite sure what they do, I just saw a video of Jackery updated their all in one battery charging system to mppt..or something like that😅) if you have a video on how to change rv battery to lithium iron from deep cycle set up came with it, I’d appreciate it!
@fullmoonadventureclub4 жыл бұрын
You can just directly swap out a lithium iron phosphate for your old lead acid battery without changing anything and it will work. That being said, lead acid batteries like the one you have fully charges at 13.6 volts. A lithium battery is happier being charged to 14.6 volts. So while you're setup would work, you might not be getting your lithium battery 100% charged. Eventually it will be beneficial to get a battery charger that's capable of charging up to 14.6 volts. If you do end up getting a lithium iron phosphate battery let me know because a lot of my battery videos have affiliate links that'll save you $150 off certain brands. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

What is the difference between 'in parallel', and 'in series',?Thanks
@fullmoonadventureclub4 жыл бұрын
When you wire two batteries in parallel you keep the voltage the same but double the capacity. When you wire two batteries in series you double the voltage and the capacity stays the same because you doubled the voltage. So if you have an RV that runs off 12 volts and you have two 12 volt batteries you would connect them in parallel by connecting the positive terminals together and the negative terminals together. If you have a 12 volt RV and two 6 volt batteries you would wire them and series to double the voltage up to 12 volts by connecting the positive terminal of battery 1 to the negative terminal on battery 2 and that would double your voltage in series. I hope that helps I'll be doing a video on that soon. Take care and happy camping. Jim

Hello from Québec Canada, This is a great video, thanks for it I bought a new travel trailer that has a 10 cubic feet 12 volt only fridge. Manufacturer specs are: 12V/DC amp draw 4.7 I intend to let the fridge on 24/7. I’m stationary off grid for 6 months relying only on solar. I’m still debating on lead batteries or Lithium. After watching your video I’m really tempted on lithium. Per you video, one battery would last 15 hours, which seems enough for overnight as I will have solar panels as well. Do you believe one 375 watt panel and one lithium battery would be sufficient? What if its cloudy for 4 days? Thanks
@fullmoonadventureclub3 жыл бұрын
It might work under ideal solar conditions but keep in mind you need enough energy to run the refrigerator during the day and charge your depleted battery from the night before. I would invest in a cheap DC wattmeter. They can even tell you the amp hour draw of an appliance over a 24-hour. And then you'd know exactly how much energy you need. But if you have a 100 amp hour battery that's about a thousand watt hours and if you take 12 volts and times it by 4.7 amps to get 56 watts per hour if your compressor is running constantly. If you divide 1000 watt hours by 56 Watts you would get about 17 hours on paper. Personally I would feel better doubling your system. Another solar panel and 2 batteries. I realize that's expensive but if you have any shade or clouds like you said you're going to be in trouble.

Can u just replace my regular 12 volt battery with these and no other expenses? I have a 30 amp rv. Also how much power would I approx would using the fridge?
@makoshark403 жыл бұрын
Yes you can as long as you dont have a dummy charging system making the battery cut its charging off itself isnt good for the system inside of then and the fridge well you have to see its max(only while first turned on or if left open) and its idle amperage some fridges can run 25 amps even 100 amps max depending on there size but maintaining aj already reached temp can be .5amps up to 10 amps once again depending on the size ill assume its a mid sized fridge and say probably 1.5- 2amps so yeah one these batteries could run a fridge using that for over a day maybe two with no recharging of any kind. Now if you have solar or a smart charging system this can go up quite allot because these batteries take in the energy allot more willingly from solar unlike lead acids unless your running allot of batteries together to make up for that power intake loss so yeah long story short charge them to 100% then put them into rv if you are going to get more then one make sure they are the same charge and usually to turn off charge equalization because that can also over charge them

Hi there ! I have quite a number of APC brand battery backups. 2 months ago, I had to replace batteries in 3 of these backup boxes. However, in just the past 2 weeks, I've had the hydro go out on me 4 times, for about 2 hours for 3 of those times. The batteries are lead acid, and so they have already been damaged by going 100% dead in that 2 hour period ( actually less on one with the computer only lasting about 20 mins ) - So brand new batteries are already damaged and not happy with me at this point. IF somebody spent $900 on one of those 100 Amp Hour Battleborn batteries ( 12 volts ) in theory that battery could last 100x longer or more ( ?? ) and suffer zero damage.... is that about right ? ( btw, the APC battery backup is the 1500 series ) it can keep my regular pc running about 20 minutes with 2 monitors running. I wonder just how long that would be with a one of these 100 amp hour lithium batteries hooked into the APC battery box.....

Can I leave a solar panel out and will it charge them and/or will it harm the batteries. Can I just drop a 100 AH battery into my group 24 lead acid box, hook it up with existing cables and go... Would someone just be clear on this. Say something like, yes, you can do this...or no, you cannot and this is why and you will need to get this for about x number of dollars and hook it up like this or you should not leave it hooked up to the solar or go ahead or you should run them down totally and then recharge them or it is fine if they are hooked up and recharging while you travel on the truck electrical or while hooked up to shore power do you have to unhook them blah blah blah... Come on manufacturers. I'm saying this here, because you seem to be pretty common sense oriented... I'm willing to spend some bucks but don't want to then regret it for some reason not readily apparent with everything else I am finding...or that important thing no one talks about that I am missing. PLEASE!

To answer your question about just dropping in a lithium battery to replace a lead acid would be no. To start off, 1)you would have to replace the battery cable connector. Most lithium have a different connection. That would be as simple as cutting off the old and replace them with the correct connector. Most lithium come with a stud type connector, so you would need a ring or eye type connector. 2) while you can keep the old ventilated battery compartment with some modifications, it’s best to have them in your living quarters where it’s a controlled temperature. I’d say the battery box that’s mounted on the outside A frame of a trailer is not worth messing with. While extreme cold and hot temperatures are hard on any battery, charging a lithium in freezing temperatures will destroy them. You can use what’s left in the battery below 32 degrees, just can’t charge it. That’s why having a quality bms ( battery monitor system) is important which includes a temp cutoff when charging. Most of your drop in replacements have a bms in them. And of course when the temps get above 120 degrees the performance drops. Theirs heated mats and fans you can install, for the old style vented compartment or just install them in your living quarters since they don’t put out any gases. 3) charging, while some lead acid chargers will work, you won’t get the performance that you paid for out of a standard lead acid charger. While I don’t remember the exact charging parameters, you don’t go any higher than 14.6 charging volts and most manufacturers recommend about 14.2. Lithium also doesn’t need the 3 different charging stages either (bulk, absorption and float). It’s happy with a single stage, mine is at a straight 14.2v. So as far as chargers go if you can eliminate the 3 stages and the voltage at a 14.2 max on your existing unit your good to go. Same with solar. You should have a solar charge controller, which controls the amount of charge. It’s best to invest in a good battery with a quality bms like Battle Born. Some of the cheaper lithium batteries had a bms that had overcharge cutoff and a minimum discharge cutoff ,but didn’t have a temp cutoff switch in which their customers found out the expensive way. Now cheaper manufacturers are installing temp cutoff switches but not well balanced cells. Do your research, it’s well worth the time.

A better test would be to actually go boondocking for a while and see how long you could go with normal use. Water pump, lights, fridge electronics, etc. Your premise for the title was not fulfilled, there are all kinds of discharge tests on youtube, but actually go out and use them and report back to answer the question.

He did answer the "RUN-TIME" premise is his title ... @ 5 amps discharge ... run-time = 36 hours ...

The price is not worth it.. 150$ vs 800$.

I hear you but they last 10 years with a full discharge every day. They charge 5 times faster and are a 1/4 of the weight. I don't think I will ever go back. If it is in your budget you'll never look back. My opinion anyway and I have used all types.

Let me know how they perform and last in sub zero temperature. I work as an R.V tech and I have have customers that ask if lithium batteries are worth it and we steer customers away from them because lithium batteries do not do well in freezing temperatures, -20° is common where I live.

@@thepostman41 they do have battery warming mats if you have to install them in an outside Bay. Usually however, they're placed inside the RV so if it's heated in there the batteries themselves are also heated.

This made no sense. Who sits in their RV and uses 5 small lights a fan and a car radio? No one. How about putting on tvs, a heater, or an ac with that, and a fridge.

Well, me I guess. We usually sit around a fire. If it's raining or something then we would sit at the table with a few LED lights on, play cards, jam some tunes, and enjoy an adult beverage. The fans just nice. This is of course when we first started RVing and I only had one lead acid battery. The 5 amps of draw is just an easy number to work with so that you can figure out your own power needs. I do have other videos in which I run TVs and Nintendo switches and the refrigerator and many other devices off of different power sources. I also do a video in which I tell you how long an RV furnace will run off of a battery and I also have a video where I run an RV air conditioner off of batteries. You actually might like my channel you should browse around a little bit. :)

Holy smokes! How about you do some actual homework and extrapolate how long you can run the things you use regularly when you camp?

@@TraditionalFun I really do try. Some of these videos are made 3 years ago when power consumption was different. All my research is done off real World experience and as much research as I can stomach. I really do try to make my videos accurate but it changes so fast. If you would like to present some findings that you've experienced I would love to share that with my viewers. Share your findings with us. Thanks for the comment and happy camping.
