Go for it! I only used Garage band on my phone, so upgrading to logic was like going from elementary school to collage 😂 but after a year of self teaching on/off I finally got pretty comfortable and, now I’m really able to use it! Constantly still finding tons of new things, and adjusting the way I work on projects by finding things like shortcuts or even new stuff I didn’t know was there! The Midi Fx section of logic alone is worth a million dollars to me, it’s crazy how much Logic gives you for only 200!!!!

Words can't express how many years i've searched for this video!! I'm the type who has to know certain things before I can advance an or move on. Nothing a person shows me, reads to me or leture's will make sense in my mind till I have certain questions answered. Just how I'm built I guess. Great advice. One good reason for not recording too soft particularly with microphones is that it is not unusual to get at least some background noise and any increase in gain later amplifies that as well. I have found noise gates to be far from perfect at eliminating even relatively quiet background noise relative to the recorded sound. Too often they either chop off too much of the recorded sound, particularly vocals, and even with lot of time spent on adjusting their attack, release and threshold I have found myself sometimes just chopping out the sections with only background noise. This is mostly a problem in the home recording situation but even in studios if a vocalist likes to listen to the backing quite loud in the headphones sensitive mics often get some spill from that.

This was really helpful and so clear. Last time I recorded vocals I used the VU Meter. The Peak & RMS Level Meter seems to me to be more accurate. I am getting ready to record some vocals for a project and will definitely use this Level Meter. Thanks Colin.

This may sound like a dumb question but....I take it that this process only works at the original recording phase setting levels for recording at the outset and the input volume controls cannot adjust this after recording. If the numbers are too high the answer is to rerecord after turning down volume on the interface?

I really like distortion but it seems like it’s a lot harder to mix this sound then non distorted. Any idea why that is and what needs to be done to fix it?

Colin, if we use the stock Level Meter in Logic, as you recommend here, does this mean we do not need, eg. our old friend mvMeter2 (as used in GarageBand)?

When recording guitars do use pre fader metering to see how hot the signal is before it hits your plugins?

I uninstalled Logic and installed again. Now, I cannot see anything on my recording. Just a straight line. The audio is very low when I play through logic. But when I listen with Quicktime, it is so loud and has fuzz. No clue what is going on.
