Still feel like regular A# (maybe A) is the heaviest tuning as bass guitar can still play like it regularly does (an octave down from guitar) and have clarity/bell like-ness and importantly tight fatness. Djent is still great but I always feel like it's quite dry and lacking the rumble and low end you can get when tuning higher up.
@kernelxsanders
@kernelxsanders 2 жыл бұрын
This is why many bass guitars will (or at least ought to) tune to the same octave as the guitars when you reach a certain point. I learned this when The Acacia Strain's Wormwood album came out. Very tight sounding guitars thanks to the bass being in the same octave.
@necroticpoison
@necroticpoison 2 жыл бұрын
@@kernelxsanders Yeah I mentioned that in regards to Meshuggah, and I'd say the best tuning that has an octave-downed bass is around A#. You can maybe at a stretch go down to G, but I think A# still sounds heaviest even though it's not the lowest *regular* guitar tuning.
@DennisMartenssonOfficial
@DennisMartenssonOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a tradeoff. At some point I think I'd rather play the bass guitar in the same octave as the guitar, don't know exactly where I feel that points lies though!

These aren't what you would call "double drop" tunings. A double drop tuning is where you drop tune both the low and high E strings, not going an extra octave below. For instance. double drop D would be "DADGBD". But for all intents and purposes, Within The Ruins tuned down as far as an octave below Dropped C on some of their songs (Calling Card, for example), and any lower than that, it just no longer becomes musical. But even that tuning is only musical with someone who really knows what they're doing when it comes to mixing. So, it depends on the mix, and in almost all cases, going below your standard dropped tuned 8 string is just pointless and more of a "whose dick is bigger" contest.
@DennisMartenssonOfficial
@DennisMartenssonOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
I've seen "double drop" names referred to when you tune lower than Drop E (an octave down from a 6 string in E standard), so I think people know what you mean when you say "double drop", even though it might not _technically_ be right. (: What would you say is the correct term? For example, Drop B could refer to two different octaves without the "double" in there!
@kernelxsanders
@kernelxsanders 2 жыл бұрын
@@DennisMartenssonOfficial Sorry for the late response, I didn't get any notification. Anyways, when you see people refer to double dropped tunings as just being tuned an octave lower, that just means the person doesn't really know what they are talking about and are just giving it their own name, or they are going for clickbait. No respect to you because you are just going off of what you have seen before and you assumed that person knew what they were talking about. But this is metal, where nobody really knows anything musically and are self taught (again no disrespect, this is just how most metalheads are because the money we make in metal isn't enough to fund lessons lol). Alternate tunings each have their own names, and this would simply be called E1. The low E string on a standard tuned guitar is E2, so if you are just dropping it down an octave, you refer to the tuning as the octave it is tuned to. Or maybe you have it in a dropped tuning relative to the rest of the strings, so you could call it Dropped E1. If you called it Dropped E (without referring to the octave), most people would just assume it was the same octave as standard (E2) and tuned the rest of the strings UP a whole step. Hope this helps and keep on rockin! I love the 24/7 stream you have going btw, I'm sure half the views you have on there are from myself alone haha.

As a bassist, I fucking hate this trend with deathcore bands doing these extremely low tunings. Anything below A is just too much, not because the guitar sounds bad, but because the bass guitars start to dip into a range that our ears have trouble hearing. It’s incredibly hard to distinguish what I’m playing and it’s kind of annoying to think that it’s like this because guitarists think it’s cool without realizing that it turns the bass into a muddy rumble, AT BEST
