I believe you forgot to point one thing out, this German tactic was easily avoidable should one of our defensive midfielders (btw we had 2.) Follow the free guy on the wing or follow the guy sprinting towards the gap in our defenders. But both stayed at the entrance of the surface waiting a rebound. Both in the exact same spot

We did neither, if you check the images on the video, both our defensive midfielders are occupying the same spot in all 3 goals waiting for a rebound to clear the ball, we don't need 2 players doing this, one is enough.

Portugal failed to cover Robin Gosens the entire time until he was subbed off - the most dangeous left-back in the Serie A. First Bernardo Silva and then Renato Sanches didn't bother covering him at all when Germany was on the move, so he was involved in all goals. I don't know how they could allow this to happen, I cannot imagine that Santos didn't see this.

Portugal has slow/aging centre backs, attacking fullbacks, and their keepers aren’t really effective sweepers either. If they tried to play super attacking football, they’d need to support it with a high line which also leaves them vulnerable to counterattacks by Germany, so they’re mostly forced to sit deep as a result of the defensive players they have.

Problem is not just Semedo but the entire right wing being incredibly slow. The way Fernando Santos has built the team makes no sense, it’s a defensive tactic with weak defensive players. Too many domestic politics and a weak management are demolishing a squad full of talented players.

Defensively there was an easy solution for Portugal. Have one of the DMs drop either in the half spaces or in the center of the defense providing greater cover. Then just wait for the inevitable counter attack. Upfront, Andre Silva should have started as the striker with CR7 out wide on the left

Everyone is quick to blame Semedo don't realize that the way the Midfield and Wingers were very poor in their defensive contributions. Germany were easily able to switch play from one side to other. Portugal's tactics was to keep the full backs narrow. It was forcing Semedo / Guerrero in unfavorable positions. So the ineffectiveness of Wingers and Midfield in their pressing was affecting Semedo. Germany played exactly the same way against France but it was the defensive discipline of France that shut Germany. I don't think Germany had a great game, A good one ? yes but more than that it was Portugal's weak defensive tactics that gave Germany the win.

I think while the German approach was similar there were 2 main differences in the game against France: 1. They took off Gnabry in the second half, without his runs the others didn't get so much space. 2. Varane and Kimpembe were brilliant and defused many situations by thinking fast and being one step ahead in the right moment.

Great analysis! I really wonder why Portugal didn't use a back 5 (which seems to be the only effective Defense against Germany's 3-4-2-1 (effectively with a front five)... f.ex. with a pivot moving into CB-position, thus still having a 2v2 in central midfield (if Bruno Fernandes stays in midfield on f.ex. Kroos). That way Semedo could have covered Gosens much better, and Guerreiro would only have had Kimmich to defend as Pepe would take on Müller (so very man-oriented). Portugal simply keeping to their 4-1-4-1 defensive shape somehow made it inevitable (in my opinion) that Gosens and/or Kimmich would have acres of space...

I'm not qualified to analyse this game from a technical and tactical point of a view. As a viewer, it seemed to me that Germany was incredibly effective at creating a (2x1) or (3x2) situation on the last stretch of the pitch, not only that in the middle of the pitch Germany's pressure was strong and didn't gave Portugal many chances to carry on from there. Germany was the superior team by a long shot. Such a shame, Portugal argueably has better players at their disposal, however they seem to struggle against Germany every single time they play. hope so. I don't want to see Portugal go out so fast. This is the first time since 2006 that Portugal have some good players. For 13 yrs Ronaldo, Pepe and Nani had to carry this team. Now some talent is there. It will be such a shame if they go out in the group stage itself.

This was a sour game if you are a Portuguese fan no doubt. For me it wasn't necessarily the score (although that sucked) but the perception that during the game it appears Santos couldn't recognize Germany's dominance on the flanks. He didn't adjust his tactics. The German wingers were WIDE open and their penetration was deadly even when they didn't attempt a cross. Definitely needed a plan B. Worrisome to say the least.

It was passive offside. Gnabry was so close to the goalie that he was deemed distracting the goalie and interfering with the play. Basically, the goalie was positioning himself to defend against a possible Gnabry threat which would have been offside, but by doing so he had less time to position himself against Gosens.

Portugal actually plays in 4-2-3-1 and they were surprised because Germany attacked mainly throw the center midfield of France, and in this game Germany did the opposite with the same starting Eleven. Portugal has 2 big and slow defensive center midfielders that where out of the game by that strategy, and the superiority you've talked about it, was 2 Germany attackers vs the two Portuguese central Defenders, so the right defender played closer to the central defence área. Inexplicably, they didn't adjust One of the Def Central Mid. to play as a central defender during the defence stage. And Germany kept running the same offense, crossing balls, playing to the wings, overloading the right defender.

Fernando Santos knew that Germany played this way, and still he did not adapt correctly. In a post-match interview, he said that Danilo was supposed to play very close to the center backs, so that they would not be outnumbered 5 vs 4, but we did not see any of that. It was a very poor defensive display, and we were fairly punished by the lack of vision of our coach.

Guerreiro and Semedo are top players, but arguably better going forward - It's far too simple to say they were terrible. Watch Guerreiro for Dortmund, he isn't a fullback, he's a marauding left-sided attacker who also defends reasonably well. No fullback is going to look fantastic when they are perpetually dragged inside to support center backs, or negotiating 2 v 1 scenarios. A disjointed, half-hearted press and some slack marking (see Rafa for Gosens goal) let them down.

I don´t put all the blame in our fullbacks since our mildfilders were not defending aswell (both cdm´s were literally not runing lol), and Santos failed to adapt the team. He wouldn´t sub nobody under 45m since that was admiting "defeat" on a tactic level, also i find it weird how he said that Germany was a "predictable" team in the aftermatch. I don´t like to see Portugal playing in this counter atack tactic since we have good players to "secure the ball" in fact you can see that in the 3rd goal vs Hungary and reach that conclusion. Many people in Portugal don´t like Fernando Santos because he has a "weak team mentality", and won´t put the better players or players that are in good form on the field. (Why is William a sub all season playing?, or Danilo?. Idk no one can answer that).

That's right 4141 they played similar like France in the Offense (more like 3 2 4 1/ France 2 1 4 3), adapted some Gameplay of France, like flank flat and sharp into the men. Portugal change after the halftime to a similar 4141 and with Renato Sanches (like Kante), Germany was getting into unbalanced. (he was like a Pitbull) First goal of Portugal similar mistake ball was flying over Kimmich again (Guendogan's Position was strange) , but great Execution from Portugal. Ronaldo always dangerous, good eye. I don't think we saw a weak Portugal. they play against Germany, is there Kryptonite. If they score 4:3, Germans have to suffer for the last 15-20 Minutes. Hungarian Team have a great Manager with Rossi, smart Defending, wonderful 1:1. But this Match was very hard for both Teams. But Hungarians after two really hard matches they will travel with half empty/full tanks to the third match against Germany. Germany will get a easier to play Hungarian Team as for Portugal or France. The Match between Portugal vs France, not sure sounds nice / Hope they not going into Saving Energy Modus.

I'm portuguese. No, tactics was not the reason for this roadkill defeat. Attitude was. Like since forever from Portugal against them . Our players were cowardly scared from the get go, panicking when getting the ball and too freaking scared to take initiative. Because that coward coach set them up for that. This was just like a boxing fight. When you can smell fear in your opponent, you go at him with all you got, because you know they are weak. It was pathetic , ridiculous and an embarrassment. F. Santos will be sacked, or there will be WW3 in Lisbon.

The Portuguese were no match for the germans both in quality and skill. The most important thing that stand out for the Germans apart from excellent passing and ruthless aggression was their necessant stamina and how quickly they were covering both sides of the ground on a 34°c day. I don't see England doing that tbh they already playing conservative against average like Czechs n Scots, if it's within the game changing situations then u can bring gnabry from bench, but from kick off I can't see a leak. I mean it wasn't hard to break Portugal defense, Semedo was a big hole in the right side, for some reason the guy kept forgetting he actually has to DEFEND that flank. Almost every goal came from that side. But this is Fernando Santos fault, after the second goal he changed nothing back there, so we took two more goals free of charge. Then the thing of playing with two defensive midfields make no sense, especially two slow AF players like Carvalho and Danilo, they get bypassed fast and they create zero offensive plays. When he finally did his usual first substitution, placing Renato Sanches in the midfield, things started to change, he was the "bulldog" getting the balls and destroying game, something every team needs so they don't just wait passively to catch a bad pass. There was complete disconnection between defense and attack, you could see at times a line of 5 in the back, a huge gap in the midfield filled with Germans and the other 5 up front waiting for the ball. This was caused because we had those two pieces of wood in the defense (Danilo and Carvalho), instead of a fast defender like Renato Sanches and creative midfielder like João Félix. How does Portugal expected to create chances if they can't get the ball? Beats me. Also, if you see the first game against Hungria and this game, Fernando Santos did the exact same substitutions almost at the same times, Renato Sanches, Rafa, André Silva... It was almost a copy/paste of the first game. But for some reason he seems scared of risking it with other players that can fill the gaps and keep the ball, like João Félix playing next to Bruno Fernandes or Bernardo Silva. We have a lot of talent in the midfield, but Fernando Santos prefers to fill the back with tall, slow players... Then he expects Cristiano Ronaldo to do the rest, yeah right, the guy is the only one that has a regular pace every game, but he can't be everywhere at the same time passing to himself to score. lol

While you have demonstrated that you have sense of humor (nice one about scoring OGs to make the game interesting) you have also shown that your knowledge about how Portugal plays is rather poor. The Portuguese midfielders used to play in the same club and created a solid base when attacking and defending. Portugal won the Euro against France while Cr7 was off, played the entire League of Nations group stage without Ronaldo, defeating for instance, Italy. Portugal has a lot of talented players, but needs a new coach, with more sophisticated tactics and who is willing to use and risk playing with other players. Ruben Dias, Bernardo, Fernandes and Jota were clearly super tired from playing in the premier league (Ruben and Fernandes also played the Champions/UEFA league final), William and Danilo were out of shape and the coach should have seen that and use other players from the beginning.

4-3-3 is fine against a 3-4-3. However, like you said, that’s only IF the wingers make the effort of tracking the wide midfielders. If not, then they’ll always be outnumbered in the backline.

Because gnabry was offside standing in front of the keeper and irritating him. If you allow this then you can tell a player evertime standing offside in front of the keeper and take him out of the whole game
