Fun fact: the shoes thrown onto the power lines can mean someone died there, but often it is used to signify that drugs are sold there! The director likely showed the shoes to indirectly tell the audience that Marissa is living in a poor/low-income neighborhood. :)
@four_girls_in_search_of_awesom Жыл бұрын
That’s confusing. They should differentiate by shoe brand lol.
@taylorgayhart9497 Жыл бұрын
*Technically* that’s a myth, and there has never been any proof gangs use shoes on power lines as a way to signal anything, because of the ambiguity. They have ways of communicating that are more specific, but we will never know what they are, because once anyone catches on they change it. The shoes on the power lines has been attributed to just people copying something they see someone else do, hence why you’ll often see multiple pairs on one line. *But* because this myth is so prevalent, it has been used in media like this to set the scene, which has only perpetrated the myth.

When JLo's character is at the fancy department store, they typically work on commission. The clerk saw a Hispanic maid and decided it wasn't worth her time. What took it to the next level is ignoring everyone else too lol It's very rude, for sure. Glad you liked it😊

@made-line7627 a commission is a percentage of the sale. She likely assumed the sale would be of such a small amount because a Hispanic maid wouldnt make much that her cut wasnt motivation enough to get off the phone and do her job. "Never pushes beyond resistance" is a good way to put it. I always took his persistence as showing he cared and was willing to put forth the effort, and that he wasn't going to be one of those guys who tried to play it cool for the sake of not getting too invested. I actually really like the couple in this. They build on Ralph Fiennes being charming and a "dream guy" with his image, but then he shows in quiet moments how considerate he is with little Ty and how he listens to Marisa's advice at every turn.

This movie is so solid! Fairytales are of course wonderful and I love them to bits. But the grounded romance is always my favourite. This is why Jane Austen is so important, because it's social commentary about balancing personal accountability, holding others accountable, economic prospects and personal compatibility. All couched in back to back sick burns. I'd recommend 1995 Sense and Sensibility, 1995 Persuasion, and 1995 Pride and Prejudice (it's a mini series though) for holding true to the social realism. 2005 P&P is gorgeous, but it's the fairytale version not the grounded version (and wonderful for it). The 1996 and 2020 Emma are both good fun too, and 2007 Northanger Abbey is a cute and wholesome coming of age ✨🌙✨

11:19 most retail store workers are not like that but if you go into a high end store dressed a certain way, her character is wearing a maid uniform, they will treat you like you don’t exist.
