13 Going on 30 movie commentary reaction
13 Going on 30 is a movie made for nostalgia. Watching a movie from 2004 with 80's vibes in 2022 seems appropriate and we hope you enjoy our commentary and reaction for it. With themes reminiscent of Big with Tom Hanks, this fun childhood fantasy movie with Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo is well worth revisiting!

A fun fact for you guys: Christa B. Allen has played the younger version of Jennifer Garner’s character twice, the first time in 13 Going On 30 and the second time in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. She actually got the part in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past because Jennifer liked her so much from 13 Going On 30 that she recommended her to the casting director.

The real Jennifer Garner is the opposite of her character, she’s very unassuming and hates being noticed. I sat in front of her at a play in New York one time. She wore no makeup and jeans and her hair in a ponytail and I recognized her on the way to grab a drink at the bar, I didn’t ask for an autograph but told her I recognized her and was a big fan, she laughed a bit embarrassed and shocked that I recognized her, I offered to buy her a drink and she said “I’ll pay for both our drinks if you do me a favor and bring me back a vodka & tonic so I don’t have to get up” which I did, she was very sweet and thanked me.

One of the reasons I loved this movie was *because* Matt didn't dump his fiancé on his wedding day for Jenna. He didn't say he didn't love Wendy. A person *can* love more than one person. The fact that he had the integrity to stay committed made me like his character even more. From his point of view he might have scene a glimpse of his past a few weeks before his wedding day, but how does that make up for 15 years of the Jenna that we found out about? from all accounts the 30 year old Jenna was a horrid person. I wouldn't ditch my fiancé for a "chance" there was a change in character. but because of movie magic it was moot anyway. :)
@SusanaCanales1
@SusanaCanales1 8 ай бұрын
I think it was good he didn’t get with her right away but honestly, I think it was bad he would marry Wendy anyway. It just seems like he was marrying her just to marry her. He didn’t really show much interest in her in the movie and that can’t really be all because of Jenna. You CAN love more than one person but that’s honestly irrelevant if the other person isn’t aware or okay with it. Most people would not be okay with it.

He’s a horrible person in real life, so I’m not looking forward to seeing him in anything, most people I take with a grain of salt or just write off as clueless when it comes to politics or ideology, Ruffalo is one of my top 10 exceptions to the rule along with Bette Midler and Seth Rogen, embarrassing ideologues that think they are superior to those who disagree with them and go out of their way to ignore objective reality to reinforce their moronic views and hatred of those who aren’t far-left. This is someone who wants statues erected in honor of the pedophiles who Kyle Rittenhouse shot in self defense after they attacked him and others and set fire to public and private property simply because they marched alongside BLM protesters even though they were exposed as obvious racists during the trial. He even came up with cutesy pet names for them that he lovingly refers to them as on Twitter. The guy is vile and embarrassing and tone deaf and cares about no one except himself.

@@MysticWolfMagic I’ve met quite a few good ones including Garner. I worked in Vegas nightlife for a while and grew up as a massive fan of film and theater and attended dozens of first run Broadway plays in New York, film festival and preview screenings of movies etc. Garner and Christina Ricci along with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins are among my top 10 celebrity encounters, I’ve also met two former Presidents, Obama when I worked for the main office of his 2012 campaign (nice enough guy but short tempered and a pushover) and Trump recently at a impromptu speech and reception he did for supporters and activists at Mar a Lago where I was invited to dinner with a client, alongside Charlie Kirk (super nice guy and hilarious but definitely an “odd duck” what you see is what you get Trump is Trump 24/7 but he doesn’t always talk like a right wing radio guy or game show host, he’s much more reserved and surprisingly candid when he’s not behind the mic or on camera, he’s actually kind of square, but very R rated humor, he actually reminds me of Dave Chappelle in a weird way, both surprisingly quiet privately and have odd mannerisms and slight OCD but very funny and authentic and great entertainers)

I think the pitch was meant to be about capturing "real" moments, reporting on "real" inspiring women and focusing on becoming more empowering through realism than fashion - at least that's what I have always interpreted it as. You could also add to it by saying to tell the stories of the models instead of just using their likeness.
@crystalrose_pa
@crystalrose_pa 2 жыл бұрын
I always understood too that part of her pitch was using local women who have achievable bodies as their models because it ties back to the beginning when she was looking at the magazine wanting to look like a model when she was 13.
@heyitsmira17
@heyitsmira17 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It was less about putting down fashion or models, and more about making people feel more connected to what they consume through the magazine. So instead of publishing content with models and standards that are made for you to feel like it's unreachable, they'd publish content the average woman could relate to.
@Melkac

Yeah, I don't think she was really putting down the models, just asking the people in charge "be honest, do you know anything about these women?".
@MADEbySOUL
@MADEbySOUL 2 жыл бұрын
Plus “real” was meant to point out the models don’t even match with their magazine photos. So basically if their face isn’t edited, its a head on a liquified/different body. So the woman in the magazine doesn’t even exist. It isn’t about the model because they probably hate being distorted on magazines too. Its about the industry picking apart people.

I genuinely feel that along with Gracie Hart, Regina George and Elle Woods, Jenna Rink is another one of the most iconic female characters of the early to mid 2000s chick flicks who will forever stand the test of time. Mark Ruffalo as Matt is such a cutie and I wish that him and Jennifer Garner had been in more films together. Also, that THRILLER sequence is one for the history of cinema books 😄

It’s extremely brave to be the first person on the dancefloor. I’ve never done that either. As a teenage girl once, I really related to Jenna's wish to be a "flirty & thriving" grown-up who has their sh*t together especially since teenage years can be very rough. Also the friends to lovers trope is just chef's kiss. Mark Ruffalo is the ultimate boy next door/best friend leading man; he's just so charming. May I suggest another timey-warble-y but really more body-swap stuff, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' Freaky Friday AND Amanda Bynes' She's the Man. Funny story about my Sr prom. So basically my hr porm no one danced like at all it was quite boring but then I went to my Sr prom and again no one was dancing and so me and my friends went right up to the front of the room by the dj and started dancing in a circle and having fun and eventually everyone was dancing so basically me and my friends started the dance at my Sr prom and I definitely agree with crowd theory

you see that back then movie producers still remembered the late 80s early 90s because they didn't put fucking overdone and unstyled perms everywhere (back then your perm would still work as a base to style your hair onto; you would do a brushing or smth on it to style it and maybe leave it unstyled on more casual occasions and it had been popular for the best part of a decade so kids and teens would already start to phase out of it, also some people still didn't care to perm their hair the same way not everyone bleaches their hair today) I forgot how genuine and real this film felt

I thought you guys would've mentioned the fact the movie had a different title in Australia - we call it 'Suddenly 30'. Still a fantastic movie, old chick flicks never die!~

i think what they were going for in her pitch was vertical vs horizontal comparison. vertical where ppl compare themselves too much with people with more money or status, horizontal where ppl compare themselves with their peers and neighbors. especially since jenna went from before the digital age, to the 2000s where ppl were being introduced to the first ever influencers like paris hilton, and the 2000s and 90s were full body shaming and the desired look was heroin chic.

I think the pitch was that she focused so much on beauty standards that they didn't take into account women who don't look like the magazines

This movie is one of the reasons I never wanted to be an adult when I was a kid. I wanted to be thinner, richer, prettier, but not older. All things I could change. Still working on the richer part 😅

You guys think it’s weird she’s in denial that she has been magically transported into the future and is in her future body. The reason is because that it’s impossible. And when the impossible happens, you may need some time to accept and adjust.

It's really crazy how many Marvel regulars are in this movie! Also, I used to roll out of bed all the time. I remember staying over at my aunt's house and she had a bedside table, I split open my cheek on the table when I fell out of bed!

It’s the perfect 2000s summer movie about friendship. Every other reactor (very few) has said it actually has a good message. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!!!

I think Wendy knew, that he didn't expect her. That's why she went (paraphrasing): "What, you expected someone else?", and then immediately shut his mouth with a kiss, so he had more time to think and give her the answer she wanted. But that's just my impression.

The starting the dance floor move totally works! No one ever wants to be the first person to dance. I've got some friends who are musicians and DJs, and I always hype them up by dancing - it makes other people feel more comfortable dancing too!
