I'm apparently the opposite person to Rhett, bikes are my livelihood and guitar is my amazing escape that I'm ok at. I'm always amazed at how many people both ride bikes and play guitar. Perhaps unsurprisingly I find photography and scuba diving also tend to be common hobbies for these people. I've always put it down to an affinity for activities where you can nerd out over gear.

I am so not your target audience -- 52, unrelated career, took up guitar again after 30 years after being inspired by guys like you, Tim Pierce, Rick, etc that guitar doesn't need to be this unattainable thing, and it's okay if I never get very good. I recently bought a 90's Godin for next to nothing that I just love -- it's amazing how having a guitar that feels right makes playing more fun (duh). So I'm the ultimate novice, nowhere close to your target audience, but I love your channels and your podcast. I get to live vicariously and enjoy music, gear, and good guys schmoozing about my favorite topics. Keep up the great work!

Greetings from Tijuana, MX. I've been following Rhett for a while and when I saw he was doing a podcast with Zach I started binge watching the available Episodes... Personally, I've been playing guitar mostly at church for about 11-12 years, I'm 24 this month now, I've learned a lot, I've gotten a few gigs outside church, paid and otherwise, and I really have just been playing with my first guitar. I wanna get my next guitar in the near future, and in my quest for "gear", videos and channels like yours have really helped me to learn about gear and the possibilities of it, thank you for creating great content.

I am a painter and musician. So music is only half of my business. Being rather tight most of the time I have to shop very carefully for gear. But let me tell you a little story here. I started off in a Punkband 1987 with a Teisco I bought for 50.- from my trombone teacher. I learned all the nescessary chords (both of them) on that one guitar. trashed it 1988 and bought a black 335 Clone. I just loved the looks. I didn't know anything about guitars and I didn't care. When I trashed that on a gig an got my first record contract 1990 my next was a green Tele with an fhole made by a company called Fenix. I loved that one a few years. I even gave it a name. "Trick" sounded greatand tought me that a guitar is more than a noisy cool looking thing hanging round your neck. So my early years I was that one guitar guy. In 1994 with my new band, I was more into Folk and jazzy stuff. So I felt limited with the one electric and got a 500$ 1960's Gibson ES120T single pickup hollow body wich was my pride and joy. Good for songwriting, stage and recording. I broke and reglued the headstock, it got stolen and recovered, I added a bass bleed circuit, broke and replaced the bakelite scratch-box,... That guitar kind of let me forget completely about Trick. In fact I left good old Trick in a studio and forgot about him until the studio moved and they contacted me asking if I want my guitar back. I said no. Eventually I boughtd a cheap acoustic and my brother presented me a 1960's Framus DeLuxe electric 12string. The limited choice of guitars defined my sound. And that's my point actually. Style is based on limitations. And the fact that I now have seven guitars is... Well, thanks to you and some others I wanted to explore the world of sounds. So I added a new Tele, a Strat, an acoustic 12, a new 335 and a Gretsch. Should I find out I am going back to the same instrument over and over, I will sell the rest again. A guitar that isn't get used is,... errrr.... useless. Cheerio Jake

Guitar for me is a long love affair. I’m the guy that maybe y’all could pigeon hole as “that lawyer, accountant, doctor” player. You would be right and wrong. I am a veterinarian. However, I have been playing since I was 10. Played in pubs etc from high school through university. Then life and work and family happens. The guitar went in the closet for YEARS. Several short revisits with music but finding balance is hard. Now my kids are in university, my professional life has gone well and now I can afford a Custom Shop Tele. Your regrets of not getting into Jazz and blues and theory are shared by me, exactly the same. Now I end my day with my Tele, my Mjolner pedal into my new Bartel Sugarland Amp...because I have sounds in my head still and I can afford that gear. I love it. Give the poor lawyers and accountants a break, thank goodness they love music. Peace boys.

Hey, science teacher with kids in the suburbs here. Long time musician (piano first for me, then acoustic guitar), but I just bought my first electric guitar in June (a Gretsch G2622 that might be the same one Rhett picked up in March on the budget episode). So I’m no dentist or blues lawyer. Used to play keys in a folk-rock band that gigged every other weekend or so in CT and NY, and then we had kids, our drummer had twins, and folks moved a little further away. I was largely oblivious to guitar pedals. And now because of the pandemic rabbit hole of TPS, Bukovac, JHS show, and your channel Rhett, I’ve jumped into GASing for pedals and I’m playing a lot more electric at home. It may be Zach’s fault (along w Joey Landreth) that I’m out browsing for fuzz and a harmonic tremolo! Considering springing for the Golden Fleece as my first fuzz to pair w the Gretsch. So it’s a hobby for me for sure, but a lifelong one, and now my kids are picking up instruments which is a pretty great development. A lot of convergence here, and I’m digging the channel and these conversations you’re having. Cheers from CT!

Guitar, for me is what kept me centred and helped me through those hard times. It depends on how many alternate tunings you are involved in. It is a pain to have to tune stuff on the spot so having a guitar set in a certain tuning that you can just pick up helps. I have a PRS CU24 and that is all.

Guitar is the common element in many interests; making music, being connected and engaged with the history and culture of popular music of the 20th century (arguably dominated by the guitar) as a cultural historian, making crafted wood-based objects, being obsessed with the synergy between the human voice/touch and an “instrument” (so, also sailing, mountain-biking, photography), living in a creative realm where you reach beyond the craft towards the magic (also, painting, sound production). There is no division between these things, and no need to “rest” from them as long as you see they are actually the same thing.

Excellent content. Think this format really compliments Rhett's channel with the unscripted straight from the heart approach. Zach & Rhett have some incredible online chemistry. I need 18 electric guitars..... why? Because that is my current collection and I love all of them. I rotate them weekly so in a month they are all played 4 to 5 times and serviced ever 3 months. They all bring something different to the table. For acoustics I think all 5 shapes Dreadnought, Parlour, Ochestra, Grand Acoustic & Jumbo make a difference and one of them can be a 12 string. Also do not forget a Ukulele, Mandolin, Banjo and Bass...... Basically get a room and fill it with guitars.

I've recently stumbled across this podcast and I've started over at the beginning on Spotify. For me, guitar is an evolving thing. I'm coming back to playing after flirting with it in college. It's difficult to make the time in my day where I have the mental energy to sit down and practice. But in addition to learning and playing, I have a growing interest in luthiery, and in learning how to make my own guitars. Time and money are the obstacles (aren't they always?). Not just a lot guitar or a parts build, but taking blank wood and carving out a body and neck. Crafting my own instruments.

52:30 Living in India none of my family members or friends had ever heard rock or metal or any other guitar dominant genre, most of my family have never made it past Bollywood music. For me to discover any kind of music that had guitar playing was quite unusual, it was just at a point in high school where I thought of expanding my horizon as I was getting sick of the trap beats. Things have changed and I've met a lot of people who enjoy rock n roll however my corner of music still remains untouched by any of my real life friends.

Cervelos and Pinarellos are definitely dentist/lawyers bikes. PRS/Gibson Custom Shop etc are definitely the guitar parallel. Having said that, there’s another biking thing that applies to the real rub with all of the above, “all kit, no clue”. If you’re a skilled player with a flame top, cool. If you have a wood library prismburst and don’t know what modes are...not cool🤓

I think that something that is awesome about having a guide on a journey, be it guitar or anything else in life is to have someone share enough to show you a path and helps you to understand what you are looking at but gives you the room to discover for yourself and what it means. I think effective teaching is a combination of guiding and self-exploration once you have a set of tools to work with. I picked up the guitar this year as something I wanted to learn that was completely different than my regular work and to give me something to think about and focus on that was different than my average day and the teacher I have has been great. He helps me with concepts and techniques and then gives me questions and ideas to explore, which has given me the space to try to apply what I have learned, and to me, that is such an effective teaching combination.

Lol… this guy (points at self) just spent the last couple hours practicing with an online lesson/backing track using this Boss Waza Air Headphones. So easy… no cables, streaming from KZbin to play along, and they sound great. I also own an HX Stomp, an almost never use it for headphone practice unless I need a looper. Too busy with power, guitar, headphone cables… and honestly, the Boss headphones sound many times better than any of my headphones out of the Stomp. The Stomp stays on my board and the Boss headphones are for easy/fun practice.

The DGT is a great guitar. I'm not crazy about the pickups either, but I won't swap them. One has to tweak the settings on the amp to find the right tone. You can't leave the same ones as for your Tele or your LP, but, once you find the right settings on the amp/pedals, it sounds great. I start by bringing the tone knob on the guitar to 2 and start from there by raising the level until I find the sweet spot (usually around 4,5). Rhett: the CE series sound very good. I personnally have a preference for the CE 22 against the 24 (the neck is also thicker). The pickups tone is awesome.

For me guitar lies between more professional work and playing for fun. My goal is to play full time, but so far I’ve only done part time sessions and gigs and such. I definitely get where you guys are going with that though, I’ve noticed the more professional work I’ve gotten to do, the more it’s almost less of an escape. Luckily, my other escape is hunting🦌

I think for non-working players who do need to make practice or musical meditation easy, and especially for those who travel for non-musical profressional reasons, the Wazas are actually the Jam man. The no cable without interference from the airforce base on the wireless rig, the 3d environment effort (not the head turning thing, just the surround), the into input jack and turn on ease? An Iridium doesn't deliver on that. I have one. It's on my pedal board in the basement, and if I'm down there I'm messing with gear. In the nice front room with the Crater Lake tapestry and the window, the headphones and the transmitter thing are just AN (one) object with no cables for the dog to mess with or to annoy any wonderful wife who may linger around the situation. I think you might have some remnant feelings about your Paris trip, man, and I think you miss an opportunity to promote the thing that we got to, which as the man says must be that practice be easy. Peace Rhett. Love you guys.

For me, I think you only “need” 1 electric, 1 acoustic, and 1 bass. Give me a PRS split coil (ie - CE Standard 24), a dreadnought acoustic, and any bass with a p-style and/or a j-style pickup(s). With pedals, you can cover every sound (assuming you have the requisite skills). For $700, you can get a hx stomp and an expression pedal which covers literally 100% of your pedal/amp needs. All in, you can get a great setup for like $2-3k

when you say 7-9 guitars, is that 7-9 electric or 7-9 total (acoustic and electric)?

IMO, ideally one would have a Tele, a Strat, an LP and a semi-hollow (Collings I-35 is my favourite). Pickups: there are so many types and makes lately that you can get lost in the offers. In my experience, the closest to a P90 clarity that I can get without the hum and inherent problems to its conception is a low-medium output PAF-type humbucker, unpotted with Alnico 3 magnet. The CustomBuckers fitted into CS Gibsons are a good example. Tone, dynamics, harmonics and overtones without the hum. I am sure if you AB'd a set with a vintage LP, you would get a pretty close tone. I also have a set of Seymour Duncan SH2's (bridge as well) on a Thinline that sound absolutely awesome. My 2ć.

Oh Rhett - you break my heart ... I'm decades older but very much admire your playing and in many ways the things you do are what I've been trying to do as a player ... but my #1 right now is a PRS cu22 special semi hollow ... alas... :p Meanwhile - Zach, welcome to the dark side! Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated! :)

I don't think in guitars, but in pickups. So, I need one or two of each: single coils, p90s, mini humbs, humbuckers...

I’m a simple man - 10 electrics, 2 Amps, 2 road bikes: a reworked 2006 DBR Podium 5, and a tweaked 2017 Specialized Tarmac Sagan, and 1 MTB I almost never touch. I have my eye on a new amp, a new guitar, and a new road bike. Gotta have dreams and goals. Guitars and Bikes are both lifelong hobbies.

Same as motorcycles. The number of needed guitars is always N+1. N = your current number of guitars. Same goes for pedals, beers, you get the idea.

Disagree about the Mood. You definitely can recreate the same sounds. There's obviously a reactive component to how you approach the pedal. You really can't approach it as a guitar pedal IMHO. I would think of it as a module on a synth. Once you get how it works, you can do some amazing practical things with the pedal.

For me guitar is a compulsion. I used to be a pro and still play every day.... even on the days when I hate it. There was a time when I resented this but now I feel lucky I have something that is that important to me that is totally my own. To have days you hate it, you have to love it. How many guitars? 1. Never buy anything to make music that you don't make already. 2. Make sure you have a relationship with all your instruments 3. Don't keep instruments that you feel uncomfortable playing, even if it is something you think you should have.

PRS DGT VS NOVO? FIGHT!
@DippedInTone
@DippedInTone 4 жыл бұрын
Zach here. They are so different. The Novo is much more resonant and lively, when you strum a chord the whole guitar is vibrating. It's alive and 100% is my favorite guitar, one of the best I've ever played. The DGT is a machine, it plays effortlessly and the neck is perfect for me. The PRS doesn't resonate as much and doesn't have the same unplugged character, not even close. But there something about it, it fits in my hand and against my body so comfortably. The DGT has knocked my R9 out of the number 2 position.

One guitar, and if you're gigging, an identical backup. If I could go back to the start (early '80s), I'd have bought a sensible car and a 'burst.🤣

You asked.... guitar to me is 100% just for fun hobby. I have no intention of ever making a penny. Frankly, the idea of doing 2 songs at open mic night makes me freak out. Having said that, hobby and just for fun doesn't mean I don't take it seriously. It's a hobby and an obsession at the same time.
