How Many Heavens Exist?

The Old Testament described a 3-level universe. In the second temple period, some writers started to speculate about how many levels there are because of the fact that they can look up in the sky and see things flying around, but they don't see Yahweh flying around or angels normally. The Apostle Paul had an experience of the heavenly realm, which he briefly wrote about and struggled to find adequate words to describe. That was years before his death by execution. Steven, the first Christian martyr also seemed to have a vision of God/YHWH just before he died seconds later by stoning. The Apostle John also had a vision, a protracted one of YHWH, Jesus, the angels and a prophetic vision of end times and the future ultimate heaven & earth in Revelation. That experience must've run a wide gamut of emotions from terror, awe, wonder and inexpressible joy. But also a very pressing urgency to write it all down and send to those seven churches.

References to heavens are in context and tied to other meanings, rather than trying to convince the reader of a certain heavenly structure, they were appealing to common understanding of heavenly structure to make a point.

The sky is non-contingent to the ground. If there is no demosntable surface curvature then the earth can't be a sphere, if the ground/oceans are "flat" then earth would indeed be flat. A contiguous body of Water makes up nearly 70% of the known territory of earth's surface, if this water is laying flat and level, then earth would be essentially a horizontal realm. The point proper is the earth, not what happens above or outside it.

If I'm reading and interpreting it correctly, the heaven that we read of in the scriptures with the seraphim and the cherubim and the elders and the living creatures and the myriads of angelic beings where God is clearly portrayed as dwelling is not where the fullness of his presence is. I believe that God, being infinite cannot be contained by/in any level or construct of His creation and therefore, in and almost inexplicable sense, God in his fullness inhabits Infinity alone while simultaneously inhabiting partially the heavens that we read of in Scripture.

Scripture says that in the beginning God created the heaven (singular) and earth as one. Where God dwelt with Adam (man). Adam's transgression put a separation between God and man, therefore the firmament, also called heaven, put a separation between God and man. So now, there are at least two heavens (plural). Remembering that sin separates God from man, as the prophet Isaiah said.

Idahoduckhunter---I've wondered too, about inspired Scripture ("God-breathed" ) being written out by humans. God was using them in their context, with their assumptions to communicate, even later to us. Like Dr. Heiser says somewhere else, "God didn't change their language to have them write special words."..i.e., They were assuming certain concepts, as we do as moderns--as everyone does across the ages. So, it helps us understand what they were assuming. I would say, "assuming" vs. "guessing".

In Genesis 1:1 the heavens, shamayim refers to spiritual reality and earth, aretz refers to physical reality. This clears up so much when you see GOD speaking in such terms throughout the Bible. Humans exist in a mix of spiritual reality and physical reality.

That God inspired certain people to write what they wrote, and proved it was him inspiring them later with miracles, the ultimate example being the resurrection. Inspiration was never historically understood by the church to be God literally possessing someone and writing the stuff down himself anyway. That's a very modern view. It's typically understood as God giving people a "nudge" in there understanding, and prophesy or miracles validating it's addition to scripture.

When he said take up your cross and follow me. He meant to die to the old man of the flesh. That identity has to go. Take the identity of the new birth in christ. Go and find some better translations than the king james and you will start to see how this all ties into the garden of Eden. What was done there God sent his son to take our place. He was wounded for our transgressions and our iniquities, not his own. For God was in Jesus reconciling the world to himself. You cannot say God is good without understanding the cross.

It matters because of the understanding it may bring. General Revelation as illuminated by our “increased knowledge (e.g. science, physics) must be in concert with Special Revelation. It is becoming more broadly believed by physicists that there are multiple universes and likely dimensions. Thus, sticking with a limited view of heaven being restricted to the material as in sky and space is likely myopic. How much more is available. @@twaho ,....Job 38, The morning stars are the Christians. As the stars are a light to the world in the sky so too are the actual Christians a light to the world. Isaiah 14, The bright and morning star is Jesus. Lucifer is Jesus. When Jesus came to the earth it was Lucifer falling from his (Jesus's) heavenly place. Revelation 20, The angel coming down from heaven is again Jesus/Lucifer. The same applies to Revelation 9, this is Jesus. So, again, the stars are not referred to as angels and are not angels as some false teachers teach. A star is a light in the sky and a Christian is a light on the earth. Angel, as I am sure you know means messenger. The stars in the sky are not messengers and they deliver no messages. The Christians are Gods messengers/angels and Jesus (Michael/Lucifer) is the chief messenger/angel.

What I'm getting is, the idea that the afterlife is divided into Heaven and Hell, and that things are "settled" over there, as in, when human souls go there they either are rewarded pleasure in Heaven and torture in Hell, and that kind of judgment is final there, is wrong. When we get there, things are not "settled," as in there are issues to address, problems to solve in the spirit world. Perhaps it's more "settled" than the physical world, but, as I see it, the story isn't finished, things are still happening there.

Something that I have always considered is that heaven is a created place and therefore exists within creation. God did not (I don’t think) bring His domain with him. “Angels” are created beings as well and therefore exists, also, in creation. Heaven, therefore, would be the place that God “manifests” His appearance before the angels. Heaven would simply be the abode of the “angels” as spiritual beings. Just my two cents worth…

If I understand you correctly, you believe the main reason Bible writers use "heavens" plural for the upper spiritual realm is because they could not see God etc. when they looked up. They knew God was real so they inferred there must be at least one other unseen heaven. They also inferred an unseen netherworld - Sheol/Hell. Where is this bit of logic given in the Bible? I can't recall anything like this. Instead how about this for a reason: from time to time people visited (or at least saw) more than first heaven (and/or the netherworld) and came back to tell the tale? Paul visited the third heaven (2 Cor 12:2). Presumably John visited the same place. (Rev 4 onwards). The spirit of deceased Samuel came UP (not down) from Sheol. (1 Sam 28:11-15) Isaiah probably saw a vision of the normally unseen throne room of God. (Is 6) In modern times there are numerous reports of Near Death Experiences. These are surprisingly common - one in 25 Americans according to one study. There have been numerous academic studies analysing NDE's. Although each honest person's NDE experience is necessarily an interpretation of a memory, the overall picture confirms and adds colour to what the Bible tells us. Did NDE's also happen in Bible times? There is no obvious reason why not. If so some of what people witnessed would likely have leaked into the culture, including the number of heavens! (Note: I am indebted to "Imagine Heaven" by John Burke regarding NDE's.)

The Bible is clear that the earth is flat with the firmament above it (Genesis). The firmament is made of molten sapphire glass (Ezekiel). In the Book of Job God says that He made the Earth, He stretched the firmament, that He made the sky to look like a tent and that He measured the Earth across. Isiah says that the Earth looks like a seal left in wax when seen from the top. The seas are surrounded by the ice wall. The Earth is compared to a footstool. The Earth has pillars and bars and is suspended. The land floats on the water. David in Psalms says multiple times that God made the Earth immovable. Heaven is said to be UP on multiple occasions - this is nonsense on spherical Earth. The earth is flat circle (as seen from top) and it is "handi-work of God" .There are over 200 verses in the Bible that collectively give us the picture of immovable Earth. Copernicus who worshipped Lucifer wrote his "astronomical" book and that book was used by those who were against God - Freemasons. They forced the Catholic Church to accept heliocentrism. Copernicus, Darwin, Einstein were Masons. Heliocentrism is about the Sun being in the center, and Sun is their god. About ten years ago many people received revelation from God about the earth being flat and since then the war started between believers and "the scientists". So far, science has been unable to present one clear evidence (observation or experiment) that would prove heliocentrism is the true. More and more observations are made and the heliocentric system is no longer certainty. All ancient cultures who were against God believed in heliocentrism, and this lie started in Babylon and continues to this day. The Earth itself is proof of God existence.

Evidence supporting Flat Earth - lack of detection of Earth’s movement, lack of visible drag of air seen from the space revealing rotation of the Earth, observations of towers “behind the curvatures”, spot light effect of the Sun (close Sun) and others such us the measurement of Parallax and the measurement’s error Evidence supporting round Earth - lack of clear map, intercontinental flights that work only on the globe (basing on the distance between the cities, airplane speed and time of travel). The Genesis clearly speaks about Flat Earth and there is no way to derive round and revolving Earth from the description. However, the ice n Antarctica and Greenland is not mentioned in the Bible either, nor splitting of the continents. Was the Earth originally Flat and then became Round, after the Flood ?
