Exactly how I speak 4 languages today. It's because my first language was Indonesian and I grew up learning Hokkien because both of my parents are Medanese. But when I entered school for the first time, I was taught English and Mandarin Chinese at the same time. Unfortunately despite living in Bali for 13 years, I've missed the opportunity of mastering Balinese even after I learned it for about 5 years.

I'm an Indo (half English), and my family heritage is from the highlands of South Sulawesi. Their local dialect is Pattinjo. Because my grandfather was a soldier when he was younger, he moved to an army base by a river that seperates the highlands from the flatlands (the Buginese) before settling just outside of it. So in my village we speak Pattinjo, but literally a mile down the road people start talking Buginese. It's a whole different kettle of fish for a language. I myself went to a Buginese school where I had to study the dialect and calligraphy. So not only do I speak Indonesian with Pattinjo slang, but I can understand some Buginese and some Pattinjo. Meanwhile, my Pattinjo speaking brother married a Buginese woman (about 3-4 miles down the road), and he sounds pretty dumb when trying to talk Buginese to her friends. This is kind of why Bahasa Indonesia is important for the nation, since it's centralised; it's the equivalent of a German speaking English to a Frenchman.

those are completely different languages not just dialects, dude.. like English, Arabic, n then Mandarin.. yes exactly like that cause all languages have their own alphabet.. if I write the word "Indonesia" it will be like this: 🇮🇩 Sundanese : ᮄᮔ᮪ᮓᮧᮔᮦᮞᮤᮃ 🇮🇩 Balinese : ᬇᬦ᭄ᬤᭀᬦᬾᬲᬶᬬ 🇮🇩 Javanese in Javanese Scripts : ꦆꦤ꧀ꦢꦺꦴꦤꦺꦱꦶꦪ 🇮🇩 Javanese in Pegon Scripts : إندَونٓسييا 🇮🇩 Malay in Jawi Scripts : إندونيسيا 🇮🇩 Buginese : ᨕᨗᨊᨉᨚᨊᨙᨔᨗᨕ basically, every ethnic group in Indonesia can't communicate with each other.. we use Indonesian as a lingua franca.. @@ashmusic621 just more info for u.. but indeed every language has dialects.. like example Javanese : 🇮🇩 Mataram-Javanese 🇮🇩 Ngapak-Javanese 🇮🇩 Cirebon-Javanese 🇮🇩 Aneman-Javanese 🇮🇩 Arekan-Javanese 🇮🇩 Tengger-Javanese 🇮🇩 Osing-Javanese 🇮🇩 Transmigrant-Javanese - depending on which part of Indonesia they live in, the local language might influence their dialect.. 🇸🇷 Surinamese-Javanese - 133 years ago the Dutch brought the Javanese to Suriname, so there is a large population of Javanese in Suriname now.. They still use Javanese, but the pronunciation, intonation n some words may be mixed with Dutch.. Sometimes they come to Indonesia to look for their Javanese roots.. But they can communicate with each other.. Cause they use the same language (in this case Javanese) n they have the same alphabet.. only their dialects are different.. like Americans-English, British-English n Australians-English.. basically Javanese can be written using 3 ways.. Modern-Javanese, Pegon Scripts, n Latin Alphabet.. Modern-Javanese has roots from Pallava Scripts used in South India.. Pegon Scripts have Arabic roots.. Pegon Scripts can also be used to write Sundanese n Madurese.. Pegon Scripts are related to Jawi Scripts which are used to write Malay, Minangkabau, Acehnese, Banjarese, Kerinci, etc.. Pegon n Jawi are related to Urdu n Persian Alphabet..

@@qwerty9714true true, but I believe op worded it a bit wrong. What he meant to say is that some languages here have tiers. For example, in general the Sundanese language is divided into two, polite and rude, where some words and tone can be different (me: abdi, polite; aing, rude). So different Sundanese community will use either the polite or rude language. There's also the infamous Javanese language that has 3 tiers. Now, I'm not going to pretend that I know Javanese but I do know that each tiers are really different. And to them that isn't enough, because each Javanese community have their own dialect. So like, the "polite" version of Javanese language that's spoken by community A is different from community B and C and so on, and the same with the "rude" version. So yeah, it gets complicated. But, not all languages here are like that. Some are pretty straight forward where some ethnicities doesn't have tiers, or at least not as complicated as the two languages that I mentioned

Ya beda bgt cok. Misal utuk trimakasih 4 bahasa lokal. 1.matur Sukma 2.trimong genaseh 3.hatur nuhun 4.matur Suwon 4.
