Regarding The Lion King, Jon Favreau refused to label it an animated movie (and not live action either FWIW), Disney didn't campaign for it for Best Animated feature (chose to go with Best Visual Effects), and the box office site The-Numbers doesn't have it in its All Time Worldwide Animated Box Office list, so all in all, given everyone who tracks or cares about these distinctions doesn't want it to be called animated, it should stay off the animated list.

Mario is kinetic af. It’s a lot of fun to watch them jumping and flying and running and climbing and driving the cars. Also the score is phenomenal. Lastly, the movie is beautiful. The animation is good but the art is amazing and the world building is deep and fully populated.

It only just opened in Korea and Japan. That alone could very easily account for 200m dollars. Then we see that it dropped less 35% and made 40m in its 4th weekend, so at its current projectory it likely has another 75m from the US by the end of its run. Then add on the other international markets. 1.2billion is a near guarantee. The 1.45bn of frozen 2 while difficult is not out of the question, it all hinges on how well it does in japan.

Even though I didn't think Lightyear very good, I thought that Chris Evans was a great choice to play Buzz Lightyear and he fit the role well. But because many people didn't like the movie in general, all of them complained that he wasn't as good as Tim Allen. I am all for different interpretations of classic characters. And Chris Pratt as Mario worked because he had the vocal range of Charles Martinet when he needed to have the classic Italian falsetto, but he mainly used a more normal Brooklyn voice that harkened back to voices like Lou Albano. It felt like an appropriate middle ground. And it's so nice that the movie did well so people can stop complaining about Mario's voice.

On this moment the Mario movie doing almoost 13,2 million in The Netherlands after 4 weaks! and now with 158 theater screens (First 148). The movie going a bit down in 3th weak (9,4). But 4th weak and this weak May Holiday with Kingsday on the 27 April and 4&5 May is very long this time between 22 April - 07 May 2023. Next year it is 27 April - 05 May 2024. Kingsday 2024 is Saturday then because of 1 day extra. Simpley said people (inspecialy with Kids) have more time, higher number now is possible because of Dutch dubbing. Next Back in 2008 Madagascar 2 was 3th place at Dutch boxoffce after Mamma Mia and Qantum Of Solace. 4th place be The Kite Runner and 5th place be The Dark Knight. It's as if people are trying to make excuses for why Mario Bros. made money while still holding onto their personal opinions about it's merits as being a good movie and not getting "UP" equivalent reviews. Did anyone actually think the critics or the reviews were going to steer this movie in the wrong direction? It was always going to make a grip of cash, how is this surprising to anyone? Campea coming out of the theater reaction backing down on Mario not hitting a billion...then telling everyone he still knew it all along after it's opening weekend numbers that it would hit a billion. The reactions to the trailers in the theaters were always crowd pleasers...the anticipation was high from fans of Nintendo generations past and present...and based on my first viewing, I could tell it was gonna get repeat business and it's story, it's plot, were going to have nothing to do with it.

I believe the film is being released theatrically in Japan this week. Japan is currently celebrating a national holiday, Golden Week - so lots of families will have time time to visit the cinema. Considering Japan is Nintendo's country of origin, I'd be intrigued to see just how many fans will turn up. Remembering how Demon Slayer broke records during its post-pandemic release, I wouldn't be surprised if the film edges another 500m.

'How the Mario Bros made a billion dollars' - simple, average ticket price is $10.45. It needs to sell 95,693,780 tickets to clear that number. For some perspective - 1997, when Titanic became the first to break that number, the movie 'Men in Black' based on average ticket prices sold 128,409,586 tickets - to make 589.4 million dollars at the box office. If ticket prices were the same as 1997 - this wouldn't even be a 500 million dollar movie right now, not even 450. At the price of Avatar - the 5th movie to do it, it'd be better at 717 million. More than half the movies that made a billion dollars, are 2015 and after when ticket prices reached $8.43 and higher, more than half 2018-2019 when it exceeded 9 dollars on average per ticket. 'Men in Black', if released today pulling the same audience, would be a 1.3 billion dollar film - that'd put it 17th behind Black Panther and Deathly Hallows pt2 on the all time unadjusted list. When it hits 1.4 billion (toughly same number of tickets needed to match Avatar in 2009, or better yet the 1.7 billion range to even just match 'The Return of the King' -I'll be impressed by how much it makes, and damned shocked if it can clear the 4.1 billion it'd take to match Titanic's original 1.84 billion dollar box office in terms of tickets sold. But right now - celebrating billion dollar marks, is literally not even what the 500 million mark used to be. This is where Box Office is a crap metric cause price manipulations where you can literally see attendance is still dropping as box office goes up - which can only hold so long and part of why I laugh at people who say 'the theatre industry is fine look at all the billion dollar movies'. Make it about how many buts it actually puts in the seats, be it once or multiple times, cause short of the studio buying up theatre seats - can't really muck with how many people bought a ticket to see it directly.

Is 1 billion worldwide, movie tickets are cheaper almost everywhere outside the US. The most expensive tickets here in Mexico cost around 8 dollars and that’s 4D, average price is like 5 dollars.

@@axlkller I'm aware that there are places where tickets are less expensive, and also more - which is why I specifically looked for a *global* average on ticket prices, instead of using the US averages that are actually closer to 17 dollars per ticket or more, which the general average I find is $10.45 current day, there is a slightly outdated number set (1-2 years old) in which I could manually input the average price of every country's ticket in USD to find the average myself - but that is way more work I'm not exactly paid to do so I'll trust the numbers that looking at the broad map look like they are pretty close.

It’s going to break records but it’s a really good film but I’ve heard of a rumored May 9th-4K Streaming release date and people can purchase it for $30 instead of supporting it at the local cinema but I don’t think it will ruin it’s box office run but it didn’t stop other universal studios films like Puss in Boots 2 or Despicable Me 3 during the pandemic either it’s just a very tough prediction these days.

By definition, it’s an “animated” movie. It’s just animation with the creative intent to look like it’s realistic live action. If the locations were real but the characters were CG, that’d be a bit different. You could consider it a “hybrid” since it mixes live action elements and CG, but 99.9% of the film is completely made in a computer (aka animated), so by definition, its not live action.

I think it’s gonna get to number 3. 1.35-1.4 is my guess. It’s prob got around 100-120 left in the states and Japan and Korea just opened, looks like another 100 plus from those. And prob another 150 from the other countries

I thought this movie would do okay do pretty good but for it to reach a billion dollar Mark is nothing but impressive especially for two reasons animated and is from a video game but this goes to show you that Gamers and even people who don't play video games but they know the character supported this movie incredibly good if Tuesday before official opening of this film and they almost sold out a theater in IMAX for this that tells you how incredible this movie ended up being 4 animated is no single impressive and needless to say they will make another one and I hope they can continue the same work that they put into the first one to make it successful very impressive especially for animated

As you were doing this exercise the weird thing to me was all of those other movies were so much better. A lot of heart in so many of them, whereas Mario was just meh to me.

I personally don't agree with "the Lion King remake is animated" take. So because it uses CGI throughout the film and has talking animals, it's animated? The whole point of all the disney remakes is that they are "live action"/realistic LOOKING. To John's "99% of the movie is CGI" statement...probably 90% of Ant-Man Quantamia is CGI/"animated", does that make it an "animated" film??? No. So no, the Lion King remake does not qualify for the animated top 10 list, and Frozen 2 holds the top spot.

Yes because it's 100% CGI, that literally means it's animated. There is nothing live action about it.

The entire move was digitally created. There are no live animals being filmed, no live sets. It is 100% animated. You can't compare that to something like Ant-man which has actors in front of a camera who make it on screen.

Its not because it looks real that it is real. The visual of the Lion King is different than a Toy Story but both of them were made through computers.
