2.5 years later and this video has aged well - it was and still is great advice. Not long after this, I transitioned to only training Jiu Jitsu (no shade against Krav Maga, I just realized that I’d rather roll around and competitively hug my bros instead of kicking them in the groin), and I now train about 7-8 hours per week (more if I can). I still listen to the podcast every Monday and follow this channel pretty regularly. There are a lot of great online coaches, but there’s only one Chewy. I appreciate you, man!

Man I needed this. Been in a slump without any confidence in my abilities and I resonate with the perspective separating confidence from the outcome, and how expectations make you rigid. I’ve endured and survived a lot of failure in my life and it only makes sense to use that as a strength in knowing whatever situation I get myself in, I can survive as well.

Sounds like you could say confidence is knowing/trusting what you can do. I’m confident in my archery because I’ve put years into it and have shot thousands of arrows. Did it come easy? No. Was it a quick process? No. Am I as good as I’ll ever be? No. I can definitely improve and will with more time. I trust my shooting, so I am therefor confident in my shots. I’ve been training BJJ for less than 2 years, but am hopeful for becoming more confident in it as I learn and refine what I’ve learned

This video is what I needed to hear. I’m a 45-year-old extremely active male who recently got into jujitsu. I’m obviously not as fast and have as much endurance as I used to but I do fairly well against others in my highly competitive gym. I wanted to try a tournament but I’m so competitive that I’m afraid to lose. Doing so I might lose the drive to continue. But I think this video helped me realize that I need to have no expectations and just use it as an opportunity to learn to grow and get better at something I love
@BarChordA2 жыл бұрын
Bro, if you want to hype yourself up to compete, search The Chewjitsu Podcast for keyword "competition" - there are several episodes with competition as the sole focus. They are full of great insights that really helped me mentally prepare for my first competition. I recommend Episode 58 - "How to Deal with Negative Thoughts, Competition Tips." As for the fear of losing, I believe you can (and will have to) overcome that. Losing is 50% of your possible outcomes for every match, so it's going to happen a fair amount. And while it definitely sucks to lose, losing is extremely useful. It's the easiest way to become acutely aware of a weakness in your game (especially when reviewed with a coach on video), which allows you to then focus on eradicating that weakness. Here's another Chewjitsu Podcast episode about that specifically: Episode 75 - "The Value of Failure." Good luck to you, and I hope you will compete if you think you would enjoy it. If you do, I can almost guarantee it'll make you feel intensely alive like few other things can.

Me: “Huh, ‘Expectations vs Confidence,’ that sounds like a question I recently had.” Chewy: “Today we’ve got a question from Jason” Me: 👀 “And so I have been chosen.” Thanks for answering my question, Chewy! You answered it well, and I will try to assimilate that advice. Unfortunately, I sprained my thumb just before the Feb competition in question, but I got a voucher for an upcoming one in April. As Jocko would say, "GOOD, more time to train." By the way, I also submitted the Chewjitsu Podcast Drinking Game a little while back - this video triggers about 14-18 sips, depending on interpretation of word forms.

I’ve been doing BJJ for three months now and I never really understood how much of a difference confidence makes in the success or failure of a move until now. There were positions that I would get stuck in during my first few weeks of rolling that I can escape from now (like side control) and it’s not necessarily a physical or tactical improvement. It’s more like a mental barrier breaking. Once I know I’m able to do something, I’m not as worried about committing the energy required to do so.

My 6-year-old son started BJJ classes about six weeks ago, specifically because he REALLY lacks confidence. How long until he starts improving on confidence? Maybe this is a dumb question, but I don't have a martial arts background. He loves the classes, and has been learning some great stuff only in the few weeks he's attended. I'm not rushing him, I'm more curious about what I should be expecting.

It’s hard to say. There’s not an exact linear path for someone. But generally speaking as he gains the ability to overcome situations that were too challenging for him previously, he’ll start to gain confidence in his abilities and what’s possible.
@jeremy412342 жыл бұрын
As Jordan Peterson says, there is an implicit threat of violence in every interaction we have especially man to man. Being able to handle conflict goes a long way in having confidence in dealing with people would have intimidated you before. Having a confidence in your self defense ability increases the subconscious place you sit on the competence hierarchy.

Hmm the take you have (don’t compete if you are just getting smashed in the gym) is an interesting standpoint. I have heard nothing but the opposite from lots of people and coaches. love the video, i also agree that fake it till you make it is not the best advice. i was wondering what your opinion about reading martial arts books and then training solo is. i am in the process of finding a school and starting learning bjj. but i have been an mma and martial art fanatic for my whole life, "training" with conditioning for mma in mind for about 16 years i had a few years i was sick so lets call it 11 years hard dedicated conditioning. i know that this is a very relative question but do you think that having read alot of books about techniques without guidance could actually make me worse than if i was learning from a blank state?

@robertturner70902 жыл бұрын
I like to think I have a pretty right defense for a white belt. What works for the higher belts in this position is often to use a forearm across my forehead to peel my head back and expose the neck. You have a lot of leverage across the top of the head, and even protecting their neck, they are still vulnerable to a RNC across the jawline.
