But everyone seems to forget the strategic blunder in China, the puncture in the British Gp, and the two mechanical issues at Japan and Malaysia. Funny thing, the title battle in 2017 was going so well that by the time the summer break was over I had bought the ticket and booked and paid for the trip to watch the brazilian GP (For those in the know, it's not exactly cheap) expecting it to be the title decider, Singapore and Suzuka threw the world's biggest wrench on my plans.

Not 2000? Honestly i just think 2003 was his worst preforming championship year. He still won the championship so it definitely wasn't a bad preformence. But he had the best car with the best reliability. Kimi Räikkönen for example was only using a B spec 2002 car when he lost the championship by 2 points. Schumacher had (much like Hamilton this year) no retirements due to reliebility issues, although he did crash in brazil. Kimi Räikkönen had two more retirements than Schumacher one of witch he was leading the race when his car gave up on him. F1 had just created the more "consistancy is key" points scoring system for that year and that was why Kimi and Juan Pablo was even able to compeat with the Ferrari but that showed that they were more conistant podium finnishers than Schumacher who was used to "The winningest driver taking the championship" points scoring system before. Honestly it was really only go one way and the fact that Schumacher almost bottled it shows just shows that he wasn't prepared and just expected another 2002 Ferrari car to ace the championship. I guess in that regard it was his most hard fought because he was cought of guard and had to win 3 races in a row to get the lead back... and then win while comming 8th in the final race... real hard fought season there...

@@EmilForsberg_GRYBO Well, I think it was the most hard earned, but not necessarily his best performance. I think his best performance are '94 and '95 winning against a faster Williams, in '95 making it look almost easy. The reason Williams didn't dominate '92 till '97 completaly was him. But even so, in '03 Montoya and Raikkonen were serious threats, and people doubted Michael during the season saying that he's lost it. The Ferrari wasn't unbeatable like in '02 and '04 where they were P1 and P2. Rubens finished 4th and he's not a bad driver by any means. So yeah, perhaps not his best performance, but maybe that's why I value that championship so much, 'cause even against serious competitors and not in his greatest form he still came on top.

Herbert winning two races with the Benetton proves it was good and he only finished 4 points behind Coulthard in the 1995 standings. The 1994 Williams however wasn't the fastest car and Ayrton Senna will tell you that. Schumacher himself considered the 1994 Benetton the best car he ever drove until he drove the 2002 Ferrari. At the first test Schumacher was so ecstatic by how well-balanced the car was he immediately called up Rory Byrne and congratulated him. Senna and Hill by contrast told Williams the car was incredibly twitchy and unpredictable at the limit. In the first two races of 1994 Senna struggled to keep up with Schumacher and spun out in Brazil while pushing beyond the limit. Want the opinion of an outsider? How about Gerhard Berger in the Ferrari who was lapped by Schumacher and Senna in progression. According to Berger Schumacher's Benetton was as if planted on the track whereas Senna's Williams was "all over the place". That Senna even managed to tail Schumacher with such a car made Berger respect him even more. Yes, Damon Hill sorted out the worst characteristics of the 1994 Williams when they introduced the improved Williams FW16B in the 9th race of the 16 race season. But you see for the first 8 races Williams was still stuck with the twitchy and bad FW16. So to claim that the Williams was the fastest car in 1994 is ignorant. Btw, Autosport Magazine awarded the 1994 Benetton the "racing car of the year" award. More to the point does the 1994 really count with Senna dead? In an instant Schumacher's mid to late 90's championship campaigns became a good deal easier. 2000 was the first title he truly had to fight for because it was against a Mika Hakkinen on fire and in a good McLaren. The 2003 title should have been Raikkonen's or Montoya's but unfortunately the FIA decided to change the regulation for tires smack in the middle of the season rather than introducing them as the regulation starting with the next. In a swift stroke the edge of the Michelin tire was gone and with it Montoya's championship. Considering McLaren sacrificed much of the season trying to make the MP4/18 pass crash tests and postponing its introduction it's amazing what Raikkonen did with a modified 2002 car.

hard earned? no chance. gifted by the FIA. up until Italy it was one of the greatest seasons of all time. once what happened, happened. 15 race wins out of the next 16 races for ferrari. Also as i have read below, a great set of points made. Reliability and a change in score system was indeed key as credit where credit is due, without that change in scoring system the championship is completely different and with Michael winning more races it would have looked more convincing at the end. However, despite my (admitted) irritance and disbelief with the FIA's call. i am indeed looking forward to seeing this video as it still ranks in the top 10 seasons of all time for me.

Simplified - Ferrari had the better chassis for about half the season but a much slower engine. Mercedes massively won the development race as the equaled Ferrari’s chassis half way and their engine was just supreme. Vettel drove amazing that year, arguably better than Hamilton but he didn’t have a chance. Ferrari screwed up this year just like 2018.

And while ferrari had arguably for the first half of the season the better car, they werent able to develop theirs as good as the mercedes team. @Kino Promoter very true, seb made a few to many mistakes for my liking but someone actually calculated it and Lewis would still have won with over 30 points even if Seb didnt make any mistakes. The pace deficit was just to much for Ferrari to overcome. And i dont think Ferrari was better at any point in that season. If only Vettel and Hamilton were in the same team, ey. Something the sport owes us for sure. That season was great but also heartbreaking. I personally believe it was Vettel's best ever season due to the fact that he somehow kept the title alive up until Singapore in a car, which as you've concluded, just wasn't quite as good overall as the Mercedes. Ontop of this, whether it be tangling with the Redbulls, Bottas, or any number of issues, it always felt as though Vettel was having to fight harder for the points he was getting than Hamilton did. The way in which it ended, with a start-line crash, followed by two mechanical issues in the following two races was absolutely brutal... however by that point in the season the Ferrari was clearly second best. After 2017 the rest is downhill. The 2018 car was designed to try to prevent Mercedes dominating in qualifying as they had done in 2017, and the result of this was a slipperier car that was ultimately very unstable and was the polar opposite of what you would call confidence inspiring. 2017 could have been one of the greatest championship wins as had Vettel pulled it off then it would have been against all the odds.

And in both those years, Vettel had an equal(Rosberg) or better(Bottas) teammate than Lewis and the field was more competitive in comparison to 2014-2015-2016 and now 2020 where Mercedes cars are literally almost 1 second ahead of the competition in qualifying in almost every single circuit. The most dominant Red Bull, 2011, was at best just half a second faster, which was still a considerable margin but not anywhere near 1 second...

Talking about the Singapore incident, I think that something that wasn't brought up is the fact that Seb had no idea Kimi was there. I do think it's likely he was trying to replicate Fernando's move from 2010. However, had there been someone on Seb's left in 2010, the crash would have probably played out the same way back then as well. In 2017, Kimi had a great start from 3rd. Sebastian couldn't possibly have known that. In his mind, he was just gonna squeeze Max into the wall. It's ultimately a racing incident imo because of that

The Singapore start has another backstory. Seb was told by Ferrari (and so was kimi) to start on second gear. Seb listened to the orders but kimi forgot about it and started on 1st gear. This resulted into kimi having a mega start and vettel getting of poorly. I still wonder to this day what would have happened if kimi started on second gear...

It was clear that the Mercedes was not only just as quick as the Ferrari, if not more so, but that it was getting better. Mercedes R&D was substantially better than Ferrari's, and Vettel saw that, hence he started to make more risks to close the gap.

Disregarding relative engineering philosophies, or the fact that Mercedes currently have a national treasure of a driver in Lewis, I think a major contributory factor to both Mercedes dominance and Ferrari's woes has been their management. Toto runs a very tight ship and has done for years, the Mercedes team operates almost like the Borg Collective. Meanwhile, Ferrari has been a soap opera. If the reds want to ever beat the silvers, they need to get their team to be the same kind of well-oiled machine that Mercedes is.

Tbh, I mostly watched the 2017 season through highlights so this was a big eye opener for me. This made me realize that this season influenced Ferrari's car design doctrine for 2018 onwards. Less downforce (and drag) and more power and straight line speed which is totally not Seb's style which in turn made things worse.

This also was the season Merc decided to change their philosophy. Since 2018, Merc focused more on the cornering ability of their car over outright straight-line speed. 2019 season clearly exemplifies this. Considering how good the Merc engine is still gives them advantage over most rivals, but in 2018 and 2019 (mainly 2nd half), Ferrari had the faster car in a straight. In 2020, Merc however have finally perfected the formula, with their car being dominant on both circuit types.

Loved the video and the data driven analysis in the final part. I very much agree with the assessment here: Hamilton maximized every opportunity and capitalized on every situation. Showed great maturity. Hamilton won the title, Vettel did not throw it away. In the grand scheme of things, Vettel did not make that many mistakes. They were just shocking in their rookie nature.

Max Pearce Doubt it, at the end of 2017 Bottas was only 12 points behind Vettel in the point standings. With Nico Rosberg it would have ended Mercedes 1-2. Listen. Hamilton finished 46 points ahead of Vettel. This means that even if Hamilton finished 2nd in 4 races he won that's still only 32 points lost assuming Nico Rosberg wins those 4 races. And considering that Bottas nearly beat Vettel anyway in 2017 this means that Rosberg would have beat Vettel down to 3rd and beat a lot closer to Hamilton than Vettel was. Even if we make Hamilton finish 3rd in some races then Vettel doesn't win many points while Nico Rosberg wins many more. It still looks like it's a Hamilton vs Rosberg season in the end. In 2017 Hamilton, Vettel and Bottas all had *13 podiums each* . This means you can just reshuffle the podiums a bit if Nico Rosberg was still in Mercedes in 2017. Between 2nd and 3rd there's just a 3 point difference. Between 1st and 2nd there's a 8 point difference. Bottas beat Vettel fair and square in Russia in 2017. Bottas also beat Vettel in Austria in 2017. In Abu Dhabi he beat both Vettel and Hamilton to win. Now imagine Nico Rosberg in that 2017 Mercedes. Sorry, this means bad news for Vettel. HE is the one who loses out on this, not wins from it. In Brazil 2017 Vettel won while Bottas was 2nd just 2,7 seconds behind him. With Nico Rosberg there that win might have gone to Mercedes and not Vettel. Sorry, if Nico stays Vettels chances shrinks even more.

For me this is where Vettel's mistakes started. After Monaco Ferrari started making more and more errors, in race strategy, car design, ect. While at the same time the pressure is increasing on them to deliver a championship. The Italian press are brutal! These increasing mistakes from the team put more pressure on Seb to not make any. Then when he makes one mistake it starts to slowly snowball. The Baku incident under the safety car, I think, showed how much pressure Seb was under at that point. Mercedes (particularly Lewis) has dominated the Ferrari pace wise in qually. Seb was feeling it and it boiled over. I think on one side it did put more pressure on Seb after that, but more importantly it gave Lewis the impression that he had the upper hand which subsequently gave him more confidence, and a more confident Lewis is almost unstoppable. I think what I'm trying to say is the focus was more on how this effected Seb, whereas I believe it had more of a positive impact on Lewis than a negative one on Sebastian. While I think Ferrari's problems started before Baku, I think that's where it all started to go wrong for Seb. Every mistake he makes from then on is put under the spotlight. Then with the arrival of Charles in 2019 that pressure and scrutiny got even worse for him. Running into the back of Max at Silverstone, the coming together at Brazil, and the unforced error at Germany in the wet (Not 100% if that was 18 or 19 though??) Just to be clear, I'm not excusing Seb. He continuously puts himself into low percentage situations. At this point in his career he should know better. Lewis would make a series of low percentage moves in the earlier stages of his F1 life, but it's looked past because of his age and genuine pace. How many of those kind of mistakes does Lewis make now? That all said, Seb's "When did I do dangerous driving" comment was stupid. As was totally avoiding talking about it. It was such a odd thing to do that I think a grid drop would have been a more fitting punishment. Also very glad you mentioned how good Lewis is in the wet. Not just the best on the current grid (incidentally I've noticed that LeClerk doesn't do well in the wet) but one of the all time greats. Would have been amazing to see Schumacher, Senna, and Hamilton go head to head in a wet race!

Easier to not make mistakes when you have the best car by a mile and 95% of your wins in Mercedes are from pole position or front-row in general. Lewis up until 2013 did a lot of mistakes... From 2007 to 2013... That's 7 years of F1... Usually drivers get past their inexperience (in the car, not in the races) by their 2nd season, these are guys that have been racing since they were kids. In 7 year Lewis did a lot of mistakes. In 2011 alone he was almost at the level of Maldonado. Why was that? Not inexperience... But pressure, and the fact that his car was not the ABSOLUTE best and he had to fight for it. Unlike now where he comfortably does a follow the leader race and wins with ease also against a mediocre teammate, and in a car that's more reliable than some road cars...

In quali mercedes was faster but in the races it was another story most of the time. Seb also led the championship for most of the races which suggest that the SF70 was more than capable. Ultimately if Vettel had the same faultless season that Lewis had, he would have most likely won the title. 2018 was even worse for Vettel tho.

When it comes to F1, I'm subscribed to only yours, Marc Priestley's and F1's official channel and I rarely watch F1's channel to at times see the recap of a qualifying or a race as I don't watch all races season long. I've seen content by ALL other F1 related channels and I see ALL of them have a problem with objectivity and interjecting an event with personal bias, which never do as I beleive that's not how you operate. This video was another case in point. THE best F1 related channel along with Marc's.

i'm a major major major fan of Marc's. he's very fair and I admire that. not a clue why he doesn't have a million subs. but people need to see independent channels as having authority. I quit my career to pursue this with all my being. the problem is, most channels do this as a side gig. so it can give the impression the audience is privy to the same information. I try to drown myself in writing, reading, off-record interviews, etc before i record a single word. the subtle blending of genuinely knowing the info while not being an arrogant prick i think is the key. Marc is wonderful at this. chain bear is superb here. driver61 is in that boat for me too. i want to introduce a storytelling element to this approach. the pageantry is usually what's missing from a marc video. and I think what separates F1's first independent million sub account. let's put that to the test.

Jan Malte Meyer shown are all drivers who finished second in the championship. The percentage is the ratio of points they actually got compared to what they would’ve got had they finished second in every race. For example, in 2016 when Hamilton came second in the championship, he had 380 points, which was 101% of the 378 points he would’ve had for finishing second in all 21 races. Or in 2017, Vettel finished second with 317 points, which was 88% of the 360 points he would’ve had for finishing second in all 20 races that season.

This was such a good season! Sebastian was the top driver that year in my mind. He didn't have the mental strength of Hamilton, but he was almost single-handedly carrying Ferrari on his back. You couldn't help but feel happy for Sebastian every time he won and you could hear his jubilation over the radio. Unfortunately, Sebastian made one mistake over the season (Singapore) and people now blame him for losing the championship when more of the blame should go to the Ferrari team in my opinion. Mercedes as a team was (and is) working so well that year that they could still get good points from almost every race. Ferrari let Sebastian down in Malaysia and Japan at that cost Seb the title. Such a shame as it would have been a great story for Sebastian to win the title that year. I think that was the last year he was driving at his peak performance. I think another thing that you didn't mention in this video was the similarity between the Red Bull and the Ferrari. Essentially, the Red Bull (while being the third best car) was more similar to the Ferrari than to the Mercedes. Therefore, at tracks where Ferrari had an edge (like Malaysia or Singapore) the Red Bull came out as the second best car rather than the Mercedes. While this was sometimes good for Ferrari (such as in Monaco where Mercedes was shut out from the podium) it also worked against them because it presented a challenge in the race (such as in Singapore). This is in contrast to Mercedes who had weekends of complete dominance where they were practically unchallenged (such as Monza). I think if you look at this approach, Red Bull "stole" more points off of Ferrari than off of Mercedes over the course of the season.
