Jamie pull up that super 8 footage of Mike McGill.

When I was a kid in 80's Mike's parents had a plant nursery by my house and my parents stopped by one day. Mike's mom was so proud of "Mikey" that she gave me an issue of the skate mag he was in. That mag got me hooked. That kind gesture began my love of skating. I lived a few houses from the McGill's in early 2000's. His mom was very nice and very proud of Mike.

the footage of the first mctwist looks like the inversion was just an accident because mike was trying to get through that first half of the spin too quick.
@lurker-mq4fp11 ай бұрын
McGill has always seemed like a great guy from when I first saw him 86-ish onwards. He was such a massive figure and hasn't been ruined by that level of fame (crowds of demented kids at a demo screaming for a twist).
@TheHabiat2 жыл бұрын
please correct me if i'm wrong. this trick might used to called mctwist, but by modern standards this is a 540. for a mctwist nowadays you have to be inverted.
@rebusd Жыл бұрын
I always thought 540 as the generic term.
@patientzerobeat9 ай бұрын
It's true that some do it more like a 540 spin, and some do it more like a 180 spin with a front flip. I prefer the latter. Gator probably had amongst the best ones like that (his Miller Flips were like that too).
@dwayneandrews20598 ай бұрын
Mctwist is a mute grab 540 and McGill was the 1st and best, hands down. Any other grab is a 540. Please learn your skate history and terminology. Mike deserves the name, respect and recognition. Practically a flip with a twist, so sick.
@iamnotanumber1004 ай бұрын
I feel a 540 is more of a spin whereas a mctwist is more on a twisting / upside down move. You see 540’s where they aren’t fully upside down.

I always though you had to go upside down for it to be a McTwist.
@erichanhauser31902 жыл бұрын
Upside down was a helicopter. Tony Hawk used to spin em straight rotation. He was techy robot. Then the tight 720. Upside down was style. Hawk was tech.

I looked at it as a sort of hack to complete the spin. I knew a guy who practiced them for six months on a couch

Originally it was just a 540 but now it's become more of an inverted 540.

I remember meeting Mike in Tulsa in 1989. I asked him when he invented the McTwist. He replied “summer of ‘84!” It was a joyous moment!

It's kind of crazy to see how he's developed it over the years too. That early footage just shows it as a 540, which was wild at the time because it hadn't been done. Now it's a distinctly different trick by being an inverted and stylish 540. I'd say it's arguably one of best looking tricks when done clean. Like the tre flip of vert/grab tricks.
@patientzerobeat9 ай бұрын
My favourite versions of the McTwist were more like a 180 spin with a front flip, as McGill did them. Hawk's early versions were more of a 540 spin for example.
@SpaceNigs8 ай бұрын
180 spin with a flip would be a flare tho, even in the clip they played he's clearly doing a 540
@patientzerobeat8 ай бұрын
@@SpaceNigs I've never heard of a flare so I googled it. All I found was a scooter move called a flair which is a back flip with a half twist. I then realized that BMXers probably have the same move because of the nature of having handlebars, and there it was. I tried to seek out actual skateboarders trying this and found some awkward attempts. A McTwist on a skateboard would be more akin to a front flip with a half twist.

you know he's a pro if he's saying 9ft transition and one foot ftof vert is small 😂
@patientzerobeat9 ай бұрын
In the context of a ramp with vertical, a 9' radius is quite small by even late 1980s standards. I've skated miniramps with a 9' radius (maybe 6' or 7' high), and they are gloriously big.

My first board. The PP Mike McGill board with that crappy material it was made out of. I forgot what they called it but the moment it got a drop of water on it pure disintegration! Not great for street skating in NY. 😂
@xl53886 ай бұрын
They called it Bonite. The decks were 5 ply with 2 layers of yorkite sandwiched between that looked like tap paper. Def not good for east coast street skaters.
