When I played from 83-85 I wore #23, I started off at 2nd base, so I chose #23 because I liked Ryne Sandburg, our little town in Idaho just got cable, and we got a lot of Cubs games on WGN.

Matt...23 is a GREAT baseball number! I'm a Detroit guy and probably my favorite player of all time here is Kirk Gibson. Love Gibby. He wore 23, and then later with the Dodgers, also wore it there and was wearing it when he hit one of the most famous pinch-hit clutch home runs of all time in the World Series against the A's. 23 is awesome! Also, before Gibby in Detroit, 23 was also worn by the great Willie Horton. Not as well known, but an incredible player for the Tigers in the 60's, hit over 300 in the 68 World Series against the Cards, and a real hometown hero, born and raised in the D. Be proud that you wore 23!

John Kruk sold his #28 to Mitch Williams for a case of beer back in '92. Cliff Lee was given #34 by the Phillies in 2009, but was traded the following offeason. The Phillies would sign Roy Halladay that winter and gave him #34 (which will be retired by the Phillies this season on May 29th, the 10th anniversary of his perfect game) because the #32 he wore in Toronto is retired in Philly (Steve Carlton). When Lee came back to the Phillies in 2011, he was given #33, which he never liked and requested to be changed to #31.

I used to be superstitious and would only wear odd numbers (#7) then halfway through my high season they lost my home jersey (allegedly) so I had to switch to #12 which I hated. In amateur and college I wanted a number in the 20s since I played in the outfield/ DH. I didn’t want #25 because Bonds and I didn’t want #27 because Trout. Basically ended up choosing #26 and now I love it.
