Of all the reasons they could have given for Sharona leaving, having her get back together with her scumbag ex-husband was one of the worst, most out-of-character options ever. If she had to leave, they should have come up with something more plausible.

Couple of things you won't notice for the first time: - Monk uses vipes with a massive alcohol containment because they kill the nasty things fast. Therefore the immediate fire. - Monk has several fire extuingishers and he immediately grabs the biggest one. The biggest one because that is the main one. The rest are back up of the main and the back up of the back up and the back up of the back up of the back up... etc... - He mentioning the sticker not saying approximately. Later on he meets again with his brother and then we find out the brother writes guides. So when Monk is listening to what the sticker says he basically fully trusts the stickerwriters based on his experience with his brother. - Stottlemayer doesn't just shares Monk's address to anyone. He saw that this was an interesting case and could bug Mr. Monk enough to get out and sees Natalie's strength and therefore believes she will push Mr. Monk enough to leave the flat.

Ooooh, great analysis! For the last one I thought Stottlemayer sent Natalie to Monk's because he knew Monk wouldn't be able to say no to a woman who is being tracked down, persecuted and threatened. This would remind him of what happened to Trudy and Monk would never leave a woman facing that danger alone if he knows he could stop it. But I've never thought that Natalie would never let it go, that she would keep on insisting and pushing. This is an awesome strategy because it works both ways, it helps both Monk and Natalie.

Randall Slaughter My father (who naturally, was killed by cancer) thought it an attack on his freedoms by politically correct “pussies” if asked not to smoke. He would not only continue to smoke but would blow smoke in their face. He was a World War II soldier who was always in trouble for disobeying orders. There were a lot like him, and no one dared stop smokers until the 1980’s. In fact it was considered rude to not have ashtrays even if we didn’t smoke. These people were being a** holes, but it never occurred to them that they were, and like my father, many of these people thought it was the non-smokers who were being the a** holes. This was life in the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s in rural communities. Watch Madmen, it is quite accurate in how it portrayed smokers in the post-war period, even in the cities. Few people asked to smoke, they just assumed it was their right.

Of the 7 different fire extinguishers that Monk has on hand, 6 of them are Kidde brand extinguishers, identifiable by the red safety pin sticking out of them and the blue markings on the labels. All of these models had zytel/plastic valves that were part of a nationwide recall because of their failure rate getting people killed. I Love the way they wrote Natalie's character much more than that of Sharona's. Once Bitty Schram quit the show it was obvious the writers chose to go in the complete opposite direction with the next character. I Love Natalie and her referring to him as Mr. Monk. I Absolutely Adore Julie! From the very start, she has this warm respect for Monk and seems to really "get" him. I had grown to hate how disrespectful Benjy's character treated Monk. And it was a direct reflection on how Sharona treated Monk. When those two characters left I began experiencing a deep emotional connection toward all the characters. I don't know if I would've grown to really LOVE the show were it not for that change of direction.

@Andrew Brindley This simply isn't true. Even her Wikipedia page says it was due to "contract disputes". Officially, the show runner said it was "creative differences", in the industry that's BS for "getting canned". Many news outlets reported around the time her contract was terminated because she wanted to be paid the same as Tony Shalhoub. And there are MULTIPLE sources, such as EW and TMZ that confirm this to be the real reason.

The thing is they are 2 different characters. Monk needed Sharona after Trudy's death. Monk was so low on life he basically got out of the bed to cry and mourn. Sharona was an annoying voice who whouldn't shut up until Monk moved. She was agressive and annoying because she had to be otherwise Monk would have died. And it is fine because Monk needed that. But after Monk got through the worst she was basically too much. Shame she got fired but it was time for a change otherwise Monk wouldn't have developed further away from Trudy's death. And Natalie's character is a perfect choice. She is caring. She stands up for herself but is willing to submit to Monk and his personality. They can argue about stuff without hard emotions meanwhile Sharona's agressivity would have ended those discussions. I could go on but I think you get the point I am making.

They were both different and both great. And I loved the reunion near the end of the run at the golf course. And who could forget the earthquake and both Sharona and Monk move in with her sister, or the way one can't play clue with Monk, or for that matter charades? And then there was Natalie and her daughter who taught Monk the internet. He totally screwed up the fbi's (I think) equipment and he solved the case with no help from the internet at all. anyway, great show.
