If Flint had looked for just one minute longer, he would have found his son and prevented literally all of this from happening. The craziest thing about the theme of Mother 3 is how the scraped content reflects this message of "this life could have been so much better with so much less suffering", most notably in Clauses case. Claus has the most unused sprites in the game and even the fact you can play as him in the prolog gives this immersive sense that a much better outcome could've happened without Porky showing up and that is most unique parallel I have seen in any story based game, intentional or not.

Claus’s fate is so heartbreaking to me. I don’t believe he had a choice in where he ended up, as he was pretty clearly experimented on and brainwashed. Just all the comments on him being completely empty, Porky referring to him as a “toy”...and then in the end the only way out is death for him. I feel for him, and for Lucas.
@Altrivius3 жыл бұрын
It's even extra reinforced by the battle mechanics when you fight him. Throughout the entire game, you can put enemies to sleep and it will allow you to hear their "heartbeat", which follows the rhythm of the music and allows you to do combo attacks if you time your presses properly. In the final battle, you can put Claus to sleep and... there's nothing. He has no heartbeat. He has no *heart*. He's just a mindless, empty puppet acting out Porky's cruel ambitions. He doesn't even have any feelings for Lucas, not even hatred; he just wants to remove the last remaining obstacle to the Needle because that's all his existence *is*.
@kagome10173 жыл бұрын
@@Altrivius i just want to add that some people think claus doesnt have a heartbeat simply because he's brainwashed, but personally I always thought it was because he was already *dead.* He's not meant to even be "alive" in the state that he is as the Masked Man, which is why I believe he, well... did what he did at the end of the final battle.
@islandboy93813 жыл бұрын
Claus was being rash in trying to go on a vengeance quest on his own against the metal robot, much like what Flint does later on as well, that made him already end up technically dead before Porky even picked him up. This wasn't just about Hinata's death but Claus coming to terms with his own state as well after help from Lucas, Flint and Hinata together.
@meicalcreigiau23463 жыл бұрын
@@kagome1017 That is reinforced by Hinawa's plea for him to finally rest. What remains of his old self inside of his dead, brainless body has to be awakened for him to deliver the final blow and stop hurting his brother. Even in-game it is highly theorized that he has been already dead, since aside of some unused sprites (such as the chimerization of his dead body) even Porky says so. After all, Porky just needed his ability to push the needles, not his alive-self.

@@meicalcreigiau2346 exactly this! and also realistically, there is no way for claus to have survived the fall off of the cliff in chapter 1. while it might not seem like a great distance in game due to the artstyle and graphical limitations, i'd imagine it would have been quite the fall. plus he'd most likely already been hurt from the mechadrago itself.

I don't know how I feel about this video or the author's intentions in making it, but your comment made me want to share a story: About two years ago, I found a copy of the fan translation of this game at a local retro game store. I had played it via emulator when I was in high school, and absolutely loved it. I picked it up and was certainly excited to play it,especially as I was about to be on vacation traveling so it was an easy choice to pick up and start up. I had gotten into a huge fight with my partner the previous night who was upset that after six years I still didn't trust her and wouldn't open up, a conversation that I had experienced as my last conversation with many friends over the years, and even a trait that I had found out years after it occurred had cost me a very lucrative job. I thought, to quote Ian Mackaye, that being cynical was strength when it's actually weakness. I had a sick older sister and a mother who never wanted kids and immersed herself in her work as a kid, so I was always . As I got older, I got involved in local music scenes, which helped me a lot and made it easier for me to process the many things about life that didn't make sense,but can be a was a rather unstable community. This is only to provide context in terms of what I had been through, it's not really part of the story. What is part of the story is that playing Mother 3 after all these years and mistakes hit different and made me decide to reassess my life and work on trying to trust others and not fear failure or commitment. Your comment about Lucas vs Claus (and living with vs running away from pain) made me think of my experience and how it relates. I've been making an effort to put myself out there more and to "be present" as it's often described by various new age hacks. Its not easy, but it's a long process.

Dammit, I teared up again when you showed the scene where Claus embraced Lucas and Lucas "remembered Claus' smell." I don't know why that particular line fucking breaks me, but it does. It's just... It implies that Lucas had forgotten what that smell was over the 3 years since Claus disappeared, and the fact that it's called out, to me, says that Lucas was really bothered that he couldn't remember. But right before the end, just before he'd lose that chance to relearn what having his brother around was like, Claus wakes up. Putting Porky's motivation as the nihilistic desire to escape all feeling very much draws a parallel to Giygas, who was defeated in EarthBound Beginnings because the feelings he had towards his adoptive mother Maria overwhelmed him and in turn and forced him to cease his invasion. Following that, Giygas sought to completely eradicate these feelings, which he finally achieved by the time EarthBound takes place, having obliterated his mind as well. Porky takes a different turn. He has always experienced bad feelings towards him. His parents are abusive and he is not well-liked by anyone. All feelings he's ever received are negative, so that is why he wants them (or "everyone who doesn't like him", as he puts it) gone. And this, to me, is the core philosophy about this series of video games. They're about feelings, emotional experiences, be they happy or sad or unsettling, and accepting them all as part of what makes the world the way it is and what makes us human. And that is why the villains, Giygas and Porky, are fundamentally opposed to this concept.

concerning porky and giygas, i think it's safe to say that the true antagonists of mother 1 and 2... are the fathers, namely George, and Aloysius minch. George's curiousity, became greed, and he stole PSI knowledge from giygas's alien race, abandoning his wife to the aliens that both kidnapped them, and setting giygas's mission to invade earth. And Aloysius abusive mistreatment of his family and children, shapped porky into the vengeful and greedy monster he became. I actually disagree with Super Eyepatch Wolf when he says Porky is an nihilistic person who desires to escape feeling. In Earthbound he's an abused child who, through the abuse of his parents and the influence of Giygas, has developed a desire for power. He has a much more narcissistic personality than nihilistic. In Mother 3 he has acquired all of the power he wanted and is still not satisfied. He hasn't changed or grown between the two games. He has the body of an old corpse yet he still behaves like an immature, childish psychopath.

@LittleNamMan3 жыл бұрын
@@joaonitro5149 While I will say Mother 2 is MOSTLY less serious than Mother 1, that doesn't make it a worse story. The game has more themes than just "fight Alien, save world". You're given an insight as to how threatening a force Giygas is, and the story is set up in a way to make you feel like you're going on a journey that forces you to grow up and become something more in order to fight something greater. The only key part in Mother's story is Giegue's relations with his earth parents, but that is just one story aspect that focuses more on him than the main characters we are with throughout the story. And Giygas' tale in Mother 2 seems WAY more tragic to me. He gave into power so much that he can no longer think rationally. He literally asks Ness to "Help" him, and it's very heartbreaking and scary at the same time. It also deals with the relationship between Ness and Pokey. Pokey really just wants to impress you throughout the story, and constantly tries to help out until he asks you if you want to make up and be friends again, which when you say nothing, he just says "Just kidding" and runs off. And he clearly took that to heart as when you play Mother 3 and find a specific item, it's an item called "Friend's Yo-Yo" which is clearly Ness' own yo-yo. He still wanted to call Ness his friend even after everything he went through with you in Mother 2. It's very sad, and even the sillier moments in the story have some semblance of weight to them. Even the "prayer" that you have to do in the end to defeat Giygas feels more impactful than the Eight Melodies used in Mother 1 to defeat Giegue. It's just a better story in my opinion.

The scene where Flint reunites with the boys and learns about Hinawa's death is still one of my favorite moments in any video game. It perfectly conveys a person being so shocked and overcome by emotions that they just snap and start lashing out at anything in their way. And it characterizes the onlookers so well, too. Bronson's surreal and shallow good-news-bad-news method of telling him, Tessie taking a backhanded slap so hard that it sends her flying five feet back, only to immediately run to shield the twins (and _Jesus Christ,_ her facial expression as the scene goes on), the rest of the crowd all reacting as Flint sticks his bare hand into the bonfire and whips out a burning plank, two of the other men desperately _trying_ to disarm him, begging him to at least not do this in front of Lucas and Claus...

Even then, the game makes it clear that the citizens of Tazmily Village have never dealt with something like Hinawa's death before and that everyone only wants to find ways to help each other, so it makes sense to me that he would try to spin the Drago Fang as having some positive worth to it even if to many people it comes across as rather strange and almost inconsiderate.

For me, I just can't bring myself to hate Porky. He is an exceptionally tragic character with a very fragile ego. You got a sense of it in Earthbound where he made some small attempts at chumming up to Ness only for him to ruin it by pretending he didn't care. In this game, you can clearly see that Porky has a lot of sentimental value for his time with Ness. You've got the friend's yo-yo, the theater, the memory ride. The burger joint also implies he finds affection and security in his mother, or at least an idealized version of his mother. You remember how New Pork City was made with fake building facades around it? That's Porky, he puts up a front so he won't get hurt. The Absolutely Safe Capsule is such a fitting ending for him. It is like a return to the womb where he exists in a state where no one can hurt him and he can not hurt anyone else. Which I think is what he wants. Personally, I never got the Unsafe Implications™ from the hotspring scene with Ionia where Lucas awakens to his PSI. I always thought they were just drowning him as a means to an end, since their dialogue during it is no more flirty than it ever is when they talk to anyone else. I do get why people read it that way, but I kinda just thought "endure it" was referring to...being underwater in a hotspring.

So the part you couldn’t talk about actually isn’t what you thought it was. It’s just supposed to be the magypsy giving Lucas his psychic powers but Itoi didn’t know how to show that so he decided to black it out and be left up to interpretation. The way he did it though definitely made it feel like something sexual and I don’t blame people for thinking that’s what happened. Yeah, they are naked in the hot spring but that’s mostly because of its symbolism in Japanese culture for purity. Itoi’s done something similar before in Earthbound where Ness is naked in Magicant but the English localization gave him his pajamas for the American release. Hope this clarifies a few things.

One of my favorite parts of Mother 3 which I’m surprised he didn’t really talk about were the small moments of humanity that are peppered throughout the game. Lighter thanking Flint for saving his son Fuel from the fire, Duster telling Flint he doesn’t really knows how he feels but saying he’s there if he needs anything, Duster’s bandmates playing one last song for him as a sendoff; moments like this are everywhere and they’re one of the many things that stuck with me personally.

I don't think I'll ever fully grasp how Mother 3 has changed the way I look at media, or hell just the world in general. All I can say is, I know that it was very important to me, and I wish that as many people as possible would be able to experience it, despite the odds being so stacked against that (or maybe because of that even). That feeling was a huge factor for why I made the Dutch translation of it. I saw that there was one originally started by someone else, but after quite some time it was clear it had been canned. I just woke up one day with the thought in my head that the translation tools are online and available for your perusal, and the thought that it was my favorite game ever, and that I could do the translation myself. And so, after 4 months of work, the Dutch translation was released and to be added to the list of translations this game has. It was quite a lot, don't get me wrong, and there were times where I was like "I have to translate ALL THAT?!" along with the text just not behaving like it should, but in the end it was absolutely worth it. So yeah, that was my little comment on what Mother 3 means to me.

Mother 2 and 3 spoilers, you were warned: One thing that struck me about the game was the main antagonist: King P and his characterization. He is supposed to represent all of humanity's vices and it shows. His nihilism is so absolute, everything he does is for a lark. The destroyed bonds, the ruined lives, the societal corruption he caused, the people that suffered and died through his actions, the animals and other creatures he experimented on, the evironmental destruction of the only habitable place on the whole world, he doesn't care; it's all a game and he is bored, because he never mentally grew up. To think that Porky Minch would get even _worse_ from betraying Ness, the only one to tolerate him, to side with Gyigas just to erradicate "all the people that don't like [him]" in Mother 2. He apparently gained immortality without youth as a consequence of abusing time travel and is stuck with the mentality of a spoiled brat, yet has the cunning and experience of his true age: so old that _he can't even remember how old he is._ His final fate being willingly sealing himself in a device called the "Absolutely Safe Capsule" that is impervious to everything outside of it, and unbeknownst to him, inside of it as well, and accordingly with the creator of the device, to keep everything outside the capsule "absolutely safe"; worse, it might even _be_ what Porky wanted anyway. And he will remain inside the capsule absolutely safe, after the end of the world, the death of the sun, the consumption of the galaxy by its supermassive black hole, the heat death of the universe, for all of eternity and beyond. _Alone._ But the character has a contradiction in his personality. Around New Pork City and his "playroom", beyond his cult of personality and the groupies and worshipers brainwashed into loving him, you can find fake weapons and attire, a theater, items and a yo-yo: all representing the existence and experiences of the only one who gave him the time of day: Ness. One can infer that despite Porky betraying him and trying to kill him, he really respected Ness and very clearly misses him and his adventures; and without a doubt would've loved being Ness's friend. You can also see robotic replicas of his permanently estranged mother staffing a restaurant. His motivation of destroying the world and the Nowhere Islands aside from boredom as he claims, is that no one really loves him at heart -- no one likes him and he is alone in spite of all the power. And he hates that others try to pretend the past never happened: when he addresses the inhabitants of Tazmily Village, he mocks and lambasts them from trying to erase their memories of the end of their world in a hope to not repeat humanity's mistakes and failures, and that the only thing it takes to ruin everything is someone stupid, selfish and/or evil enough to act out in spite of changing the rules or never admitting defeat, and within the context of the game and its events, he is not entirely wrong. In the end, I find Porky "King P" Mitch, in spite of how loathsome and despicable he is, to be utterly pitiful. He is a pathetic hypocrite that cannot ever grasp his own flaws, denies his mistakes and drags everyone around him to his level to prove to the world and himself that he exists, and everyone, deep down, is just like him living in his own little world, like a child -- ignoring all evidence to the contrary. No wonder he is, and forever will be, alone.

Incredible analysis. Porky is one of my favorite fictional villains of all time and its largely because of his underlying motivations. He acts out of selfishness, greed and evil but deep down there is a part of him that wants to be loved like anyone else. He wanted to be friends with Ness but was rejected. So he denies this part of him and acts like he only cares about himself. So when he sees the people of tazmilly living peacefully it enrages him, so he sets out to destroy it. In the confrontation with Porky he says something that perfectly sums up his ideology. I believe it goes something like this: "No matter what, the creatures known as people will always act out of stupidity and evil. You could have been happy like me if you followed the selfish visions of a hero." I also think his abusive parents played a factor. It's what separates him from Ness. While Ness goes through many terrible things in earthbound, he has the support of a loving family to get through it and keep him strong. That's why he has to call his mom whenever he feels homesick. So what happens to someone like Porky, who has no one to call when he's homesick, who is beaten by his father. He would turn to whoever would accept him, even an unstoppable alien evil. And he would embrace his worst vices to cope with his feelings of loneliness. In mother 3, he sets out to make others expierence what he felts. He destroys Lucas' family. Lucas doesn't get to call anyone when he's homesick like Ness can. Due to Porky's actions, his mom is dead, his brother is missing and his father is distant. But despite that, Lucas is able to rise above Porky, not let the trauma cause him to fall into evil like Porky did.
