FACT CHECK: Her base pay is about $30k a year plus she gets BAH (basic housing allowance) each month. If she lives in the Norfolk area it $18,000 a year - if she is married or has kids it’s $22,968 a year. If she lives in the San Diego area it’s $32,760 a yr - if she is married or has kids it’s $43,688 a year. If she lives around Parris Island it’s $22,320 a year - if she is married or has kids it’s $26,064 a year. If she lives in the barracks she only gets her base pay. So if she is only bringing home $970 twice a month she’s living in the barracks.

That's $1940 per month of pure disposable after-tax income. Housing, food, healthcare? Paid for. Family's healthcare & housing? Paid for. Considering the benefits, it's closer to someone making $60k a year. Not great initially but considering the scaling, it's not bad. Hear me out: A Soldier with 14+ years in the DC area will have an after-tax equivalent to someone making over $110-$180K a year due to non-taxable benefits, plus a decent pension and dirt cheap health care including family members when retired after 20 years of Service. The pension starts as soon as you retire so if you joined at 18, you'll start receiving a pension at 38. If you live 40 more years after retirement, the pension during the Soldier's lifetime will be anywhere from $1.5 to $4 million depending on rank. Not a bad gig.

@@jodispiggai3945lol what. A fast food worker spends all their money for living necessities, military wage is pure disposable income. The fast food worker has no disposable income, the military service member has purely disposable income. If this was a graph, the fast food worker has nothing, and the service member has 22k + the cost of living where they are stationed, easily becoming 50k or more. This isn’t even considering benefits. Besides this, finances are a large incentive for military service because the financial aspect of it is amazing, civilian finances don’t come close to matching military finances in terms of money you can save or spend freely. On the other hand however, most people don’t join the military out of desire for money. Not everyone joins for “honor or glory” but most people do in fact join seeking some purpose outside of their 9-5 civilian life. This is something which money can’t buy, and I’d wager that most service members are thankful for the opportunity they’ve been given

But that’s on top of free housing, food, health coverage for dental, vision, mental, physical etc.. post 9/11 GI Bill, on the job skills training.. it’s difficult to put a value on the guarantee of a check knowing it’s very difficult to get fired, plus the pride of belonging, the connection you make.. Joining the Marine Corps was the best thing I ever did. My knees and back hurt, but I would do it all over again.

@@notvoodoo2654 Correct, sir! Because in 1968-69 as a Corporal (E-4) in the Marine Corps in Vietnam I was paid $250.00 a month which included $50.00 a month combat pay. And so it goes. Money is backed by nothing but a (vague) "promise" to pay. Another gauge: then a gallon of leaded was 25-30 cents a gallon. Good luck, fellow Americans, and Semper Fi!
@bubbalong7646
@bubbalong7646 Жыл бұрын
@@notvoodoo2654 No, you are certainly not long-winded. You say a lot of poignant and interesting things. We Marines thought we were not special at all. We were just doing our duty as citizens and we looked at the war as a challenge for us and for the Marine Corps. We fought as much for the Marine Corps as for the country. Our tactical area of responsibility was under control. So when we were ordered to withdraw from the entire country we just saluted smartly and said, Aye aye, sir! Three bags full sir! Despite what the lefties say, Vietnam was a war that needed to be fought to teach a hard lesson to the worldwide communist movement. Our fighting there kept the reds out of the rest of SE Asia and kept them from threatening Indonesia and Australia. And under SEATO the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and Philippines sent troops to fight with us. And as you know, inflation in the US is constant. More examples: in WW2 bread was 20-30 cents a loaf;eggs 30 cents a dozen, a Coke 5 cents, a 12oz Pepsi 5 cents; in 1968 a GTO was about $5000, a S&W .38 about 80-90 dollars. The average salary was about $5000-6000 a year. So in real purchasing power we are about the same, perhaps less because many things have gone downhill in my opinion and observation. And you have accomplished more than I. By the way, I'm 81 and for 10 years have lived in the Spinal Cord Injury Residential Unit at the VAMC in Hampton, Virginia; there are about 40 residents here, all ages, all fairly recent wars. I happen to be the oldest right now. Great to hear from you! Semper Fi!

Because it’s a militia army, the lowest rank as you can get professionally employed to the Swiss armed forces is in the rank of a sergeant (sgt). I just got out at 10 years and need to really make this clear about how misunderstood these young kids are about their paycheck. First year yeah not great but it includes a place to live, a paid internship, an education, and full healthcare coverage ammounting to what would be 500+ a month. Once you get out of the barracks at 3 years and make e-4, your housing allowance scales to wherever you are, from 1200-2900 just for that. At just 3 years youre making the equivalent of 3500+ a month, and at 9 as an E-5 i was getting 4550 a month, full healthcare coverage and a no money down VA loan on a 600k house at 2.9% 30 year to then rent out, with the full confidence and qualifications to walk into a contracting job making more for no money out of my own pocket, no unpaid internship, no money spent or years not getting paid for a degree, a GI bill to cover one if I want one, and the oppurtunity to also get TA while active to get even more free education. Not to mention the 20k bonus nor how a good portion of these new kids are getting 10-15k in BOOTCAMP now, and the 1500+ youll likely get in disability for the rest of you life, OR the pension you can work for which will be a scarcity for your generation. I WISH I could educate these young 19 year olds who dont realize how much of a goldmine they are sitting on in the military compared to most of their graduating highschool class. It's crazy how finacially solid the military can make you so dont be afraid to join and DONT WASTE THE LIFE CHANGING RESOURCES THAT LITERALLY EVERYONE IS AFFORDED. Too many people sit on winning lottery tickets and refuse to cash them in.

From that you pay $1k to CFHA and still need to buy food or you pay $700sih to live on base and eat at the mess hall. They can also set their home state to one with basically no tax. That marine is talking about their take home. After tax you're likely looking at 1400ish which is about 1080 USD. So you're paid the same but you also still need to pay for food and rent.

@@andrewmiller115 That is only if your home state has no income tax or the state that you are stationed in has no income tax. You cannot change your state of residency to a random state. Also, where I was stationed, they take $1200 from your paycheck to stay in the barracks. You share the room with another soldier, whereas there are apartments off post that are better and you'll get to be alone for $700 a month. But you are forced to stay in the barracks unless you marry or become an E-6. Lastly, if you stay in the barracks, the military forces you to pay for the Dining Facility whether you use it. That's $300 month for food that is closed during the weekends and holidays, that you cannot get refunded for, because there is another DFAC 3 hrs walk you can use. The food is also very poor quality, and that has to do with how dfacs receive their funding causing a reverse snowball effect of not having enough money to maintain the facility that I wont get too much into. Point is, it's definitely not a good deal. The GI Bill helps to offset the poor pay, so that you are effectively earning an extra $1k-$3k a month for your first 3 years if you decide to use your GI Bill once you get out, and that can make it worth it if you are poor and joining the military for a ride to the middle class. However, my brothers all went the college route instead, and have their debts paid off with 6 figure incomes, while I am just beginning college, and even with no college debt, I'll still be behind once I graduate had I just done college from the start. You don't join for money.
