Thanks for the openness. I know there are parents hoping their child makes it to the MLB. Most parents are just daydreaming. Kids should focus on their education and don't go broke chasing a dream that may turn into a nightmare.

Great information for people to hear. I was never drafted, however, knew my what my abilities were and did not place lofty goals on myself. I understood that I never would have made it beyond single A, and just could not afford it. Got a job and started playing for fun. Being able to coach catchers is very rewarding.

I think it's a crime how badly they treat minor leaguers. They get paid crap money and on top of that they don't even get decent food! That's absurd! Baseball is a $10 Billion business, so clearly the money is there. I'm not saying minor leagues should be paid as much as the top players, but shoot $6,000 a year is borderline criminal. God knows how much talent had to quit baseball because they could not get by with the money they are given. Something needs to change!

What needs to happen is the abolishment of this monopolistic, socialistic closed off system called the MLB and its union. All the revenues go to the MLB and its owners and players as stated in their CBA. What baseball needs to do is adopt a promotion/relegation structure where the bottom few teams get demoted to triple-A, top triple-A teams get promoted to the MLB. And you do this from amateur leagues to minors to the major league. That way owners are forced into investing into players, aka fighting for talent and therefore driving wages up, so that they can either stay in MLB or eventually get promoted to MLB.if an owner isn't willing to attract/ pay for talent, the team will suffer and get relegated and lose money and interest and players will go to a team that wants to succeed and pay them. But this will never happen because the MLB and its owners will never want outside competition and would go against their interest. Think of it like a socialist country; the few elites - the dictator and his friends and higher ups- gather all the wealth, while the common folk gets shafted with $6,000 salaries. It's this system that allows upward mobility, higher salaries and a better on field product. It's also why the European soccer leagues shit all over our league, MLS.
@forceinfinity7 жыл бұрын
+bob smith completely agree with you. I also like the promotion/relegation system as that tends to "motivate" the lower teams to fight that much harder if they want to stay in the majors. That's the thing I liked about the Premier League is that toward the end of the season, you not only had drama at the top of the standings, but you had drama at the bottom of the standings. It made for an interesting story to see the teams near the bottom of the ladder fight for their lives. If they stave off relegation, its almost like they made an achievement. Too bad we don't have a more prestigious type of world tournament in baseball similar in prestige to the Champions League in soccer. That would be something to see the best the Majors had offer (like say the Nationals) going up against the best Japan had to offer as an example. I know there's the WBC, but they don't seem to have the same prestige as as the Champs League

Dan Da Man's question is stupid. It is obviously very hard. If it were easy, then you and thousands of other people would be playing, or would have been playing in MLB. I know that you are only one one the thousands of people that couldn't hit ML pitching well enough to play there for any length of time, my girlfriend's grandfather is in the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame and he is one of them too. He played for decades in minor ball in the US and in both Mexican leagues. When I asked him why he never got a shot in MLB he said: "Pitching."

I live near a city where there is an A level minor league team. They draw somewhere between 400k and 500k attendance a year. Nice stadium, games are a lot of fun to go to. Somebody is making a lot of money from that. It's unfortunate they would take advantage of the players. I would have to wonder if there is some kind of agreement between the teams on player salaries (which one would think would be illegal). It sounds like they are dangling the illusion of making big bucks in the major leagues in front of the players as incentive to get them to play for next to nothing.

The minor leagues are subsidized. The MLB doesn't care about the solvency of any MiLB team so long as they churn out future major leaguers.

Something I'm not so clear on is, if you sign a $400,000 contract (or whatever the minimum is for MLB) and only play 100 days in a single season, you only get paid for those 100 days? Meaning you don't make a full $400,000. I'm sorry if you already explained this. But I'm new to your channel and have always wondered about this. Thanks for making these videos. 👍
@Geotpf7 жыл бұрын
The major league minimum salary is $400k for a full season (well, $550 now I guess), which is about 180 days (162 games plus a few days off). But if you are only a major league player for a few days, you make $400k/180*number of days you are on the big league roster.

I found this video after reading the news story about former Mets minor league pitcher Matt Pobereyko passing away at the age of 31 due to a heart attack. It made me think, what is someone doing in the minor leagues at that age? Can you make a career out of minor league baseball? I guess at some age you accept that you're not going to make the majors, but you love the game and just want to keep playing as long as they'll keep you. But then I wonder how much of the minor league's focus is on winning vs producing pro prospects? Like if a player's past 30 and has never been called up to the majors, then at some point wouldn't his minor team just cut him loose?

I prefer to go to AAA minor league games. AAA Players are 95% as good as major league players with ticket prices 10% as much. Much better value.

The reason MiLB get paid so poorly is the same reason MLB players USED to get paid so poorly... the agreement between the MiLB suits and the MLB suits benefits everyone except the players actually on the field. MiLB baseball is fun, exciting and family friendly. But the way the players are treated is literally criminal.

And MLB wonders why the interest in professional baseball dwindles year after year. If you are a young guy who can play baseball and either basketball or football well, why would you not choose the route where you get paid almost immediately (ALA Kyler Murray, Michael Vick, etc)

It's shocking to learn how low minor league salaries are. Surviving the poverty wages, harsh travel logistics, bad food and dodgy accomodations is almost as challenging as making it in MLB. At least you had the talent to make it there and probably knew it. You gotta feel for the poor SOBs who never make it. Can you make a video on why mediocre minor leaguers put up with this harsh life knowing they can't make it to MLB?

I agree! I think most believe they have a shot.

Im in 8th grade currently and am just picking up baseball. I have incredible athletic ability and strength but I know that only takes you so far. I have 3 months to prepare for high school freshman baseball since it's summer. What do you think I should practice and do you have any tips for practicing? Do I even have a chance? I know baseball is something you pick up at a young age and I did play awhile when i was really little but stopped for awhile. Thanks. Love your videos.

Sylos you for sure have a chance for highschool ball, some kids out there are the same as you and hardly know baseball they are just incredibly athletic. Even if you don't make the team.. GREAT that means you have even more time to get ready and get more experience for the next season. I've played baseball for about 12 years (fall and spring seasons) and I've figured out a huge part of baseball Is the mind game. Go out there thinking you are the best player on the field , and if you mess up and make an error.. get up and bust your ass to get the next One. Make sure you go out there giving your maximum effort . Hustling down the bags, diving , taking every swing/ every pitch one at a time because every one of them matters. Show the coaches you want to play and be respectful . Goodluck and maybe you can read up on some work outs and good drills over the summer. I hope you make it!!!

Thanks! Well I think you need to work on the core things. And you need a lot of reps. More reps than you think. You are trying to make up years worth of reps in a short amount of time. That is really the only way you will feel comfortable and build your skill level. Good luck to you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
