My cousin saved his bonus while the other minor leaguers blew it on vehicles. He was living with a random family while in the minors making minimum wage. He ended up on the Nationals roster shortly before having a career ending shoulder injury. He's glad he saved that bonus.

Good shit. I always like the inner workings of baseball...like a day in the life. I dated David Ortiz's niece in 1999 when he played for the Twins and got to hang out with him for a weekend. It was pretty cool to see the routine when they left for the game, what they did after the game (in this case went and ate supper at 10:30PM and had some beers....)

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they will voluntarily pay their minor league players more money. There was a class action lawsuit by former players that went nowhere. The signing bonuses for high draft picks is huge. That should be calculated in the numbers. What's really unfair is that college student athletes make millions and millions of dollars for their colleges and get paid nothing. Even students on academic scholarship can get paid work on their campuses, but American colleges think their athletes should settle for the scholarship. Most of the degrees that they earn are worthless. A college athlete who doesn't get drafted by the NBA, NHL, MLB or NFL basically worked for three to four years for free and have nothing to show for it. There are a few exceptions. Some bright students who also excelled at sports and earned a degree that will enrich their lives and provide future employment opportunities, but for the vast majority the payoff with a big major league contract or signing bonus is the thing.

Very interesting and well explained so thanks . I live in Oliver BC Canada and the Big League Experience camps just ended. They are weekly camps ever August for young kids up to 17 . I believe this camp has been going on since the early 60’s. Fun to watch the practice and games.

It’s really cool to hear from a guy who was drafted high, kinda busted (no offense; getting picked that high in draft is an accomplishment in itself), but have these cool, humble stories. You made it to the show; the rest of us could only dream. There was a time in my life, where being a big-leaguer was the only thing I thought about. Had the physique for it, but not the drive. Got a Poker buddy who signed with the Phillies in 1987. Started in AAA sent down to AA and was called up the last month of the season. He made ,18 G the entire year. His best year was '91 when he made 130K playing the majority in the Major's.

Seeing more and more talent and studs can make someone feel like they arent as good and if they have to be that good wonder if they will ever get to that point. Great story Matt. You really do a nice job presenting things that are foreign to most of us as fans. I worked with a guy at a AAA insurance office in Lee's Summit Missouri. He was a big baseball guy who played at William Jewell College. I can't remember his name, but his friend was called up to the Padres around the time you were there. Can't remember his name either, but I don't think he was around very long. Wondering if you knew him.

I have heard a lot of stories from minor and major league players and most people do not know how difficult it is until you play in the majors. I give players credit who were drafted in the low rounds and play for next to nothing but you have to love the game and hope you can get called up. I met many AA minor league players that never reached the majors and they were good players that never got the chance to play.

When I played baseball in College at a small D1 (Chicago State 2008-2010) we would get around $30 a day for meal money.. So if we were leaving for a weekend series on a Thursday and coming back on Sunday we would get around $120-$130 cash give or take.. and depending on who we were playing the other team would feed us and the hotel would usually have free breakfast too.. Before NIL and as a broke college kid this was clutch.. we would all come home with about $75-$100 in our pockets.
