As a person who is having to live with a catheter full time, it's difficult to hear medical "professionals" YUCK IT UP over this matter. Last year we had a bit of a scare in the family because my dad was having surgery and before the surgery, the nurse tried to catheterize him but did it incorrectly. My dad thought he was going to die because of the amount of pain he was experiencing and asked for my mom to be called into the room to tell her his last wishes. The catheter eventually was inserted properly and the surgery went fine, he's still okay today. It's just interesting to think that improper catheterization can be so uncomfortable that someone would think they were dying.

I haven't really told this story much bc it was a very traumatic experience for me as a 17 year old girl, but 3 years ago, i was admitted to the mental hospital for suicidal thoughts. For those who don't know, it's routine to give a urine sample on admission. I got there late in the day, so when i handed the cup to the male nurse at the desk when i was done, he said "Uhhh...just put it in the corner." I KNEW, KNEW in that moment they were gonna lose it, but i ignored the thought and did what he said. The next day, they said they had never gotten a urine sample from me. I told them they certainly had, but that they were the ones who had lost it. They said "Well we need another one." I said "Ok, but i don't have to go rn, can you wait a few more hours?" They said "No, we need one RIGHT NOW.". So i gave the sample but they complained saying it wasn't enough.🤦 Then they said "Ok you HAVE to have a nurse in there with you, we NEED that sample." I tried as hard as i could, turned the sink on and let water flow, and the nurse turned her back, but i couldn't go with someone else in the room with me. I think it was the next day, they pulled me out of group therapy, and took me to my room to catherize me. When they asked if it was gonna hurt they just said "Probably". I laid down on my bed, and was trying to be cooperative, but the second i felt that catheter go in my legs clamped shut and i said "no please don't do it." A nurse got on top of my stomach and forced my legs open while the other one inserted the catheter. So much pain. 20 out of 10. So much pain, i couldn't even think the word no, let alone scream it. So i just screamed. The utter humiliation when the tube reached my bladder and i could feel the urine flow out. It felt like i was peeing on myself, but i couldn't physically stop it. I started crying. When it was over they sent me back to group therapy like nothing had happened. My friend asked me what was wrong and i tried to tell him quietly but they heard me and said "That is not appropriate for group discussion, stop it now." But the humiliation wasn't over. That night, when i went to get into bed, i noticed they hadn't changed my sheets, and there were urine stains on the blanket. It was too late to do laundry, so i had a choice. Either sleep in my own urine, or be freezing cold all night. I chose the blanket. I don't mean to talk down upon rape victims in any way, but the whole experience made me feel extremely violated. I've never been to a mental hospital since. I don't trust them anymore.

as someone who’s had ~the pleasure~ of having urinary retention 5 times: catheters are the worst. you don’t notice how bad they hurt when you have urinary retention because let’s face it, you’re more focused on the whole “bladder is about to literally explode” thing, which is VERY painful. but when I had a urodynamics study this summer I literally had to walk out mid procedure because I couldn’t handle the pain from the catheter. I have NEVER walked out of a procedure. It wasn’t just that it hurt horribly, it hurt horribly, it stung, AND it was uncomfortable. I don’t know how to explain the difference between pain and uncomfortable pain, but I swear it exists.

I just had my Mitrofanoff (appendix used to create a catheterize-able channel from the belly button to bladder) in august for this very reason. There was no way I would be able to cath normally, and now I can freely cath through my belly button instead without pain. At most, it is a bit sore afterwards if I haven't used it enough that day. The suprapubic catheter during recovery was pretty painful too, but mainly if it was bothered, though I'm glad the first surgeon decided that it wouldn't have been a good option for me long-term. I hope that your bladder behaves better for you in the future!

As someone who had to regularly start using catheters as an adult; I don't think it hurts at all - WHEN you've learned to do it correctly and know where to put it. If you miss - or poke it where it shouldn't go, yes - it's not fun 😜 on men I wouldn't know.

OMG I wish there had been a catheter queen at the hospital my daughter was at. She was just a few days old and had a major ABO blood disorder and they were trying to rule out any infections on top of that. They couldn’t get a clean urine sample so had to do a catheter. It took the nurse so many tries and it was pure torture. Then it still wasn’t clean and had to be done again but I asked her to get another nurse. I had to have a catheter a few years ago due to acute kidney failure (made a complete recovery thank god). Was pretty unwell at the time, but as a nurse, I was able to give the student nurse doing the procedure a few tips. Best tip is; after the local anaesthetic gel is inserted, don't let it just ooze out (gently squeeze the urethra closed) and give it time to work before passing the catheter!!! My experience was that the catheterisation was fine, it was having it insitu that was agony. Intense discomfort and the constant feeling of needing to pee was insane. For years I have told patients, "just relax and imagine you are peeing, the pee is flowing in to the bag" when I heard that complaint. Trust me, no amount of "relaxing" and imagining you are peeing relieves that discomfort!!!!!

My brother had a catheter inserted last year but it was done incorrectly. He couldn't urinate for about ten hours which led to a urosepsis (that's the German word, I'm not sure if it's correct 😅) We told the nurses many times and they just said they couldn't do anything without a doctor being there. My brother was in so much pain because his bladder was so full, almost as big as a melon. At one point he couldn't even move his head anymore because he was in so much pain.. It was horrifying and the nurses didn't do anything, not even flush the catheter even though he had kidney stones removed and there could have been one blocking the catheter.. He had to spend a night at ICU because his general condition got so bad. The hospital he stayed at really sucked..

That’s awful! I’m not sure what the scope of practice is for nurses in Germany but that would be unacceptable where I’m from! I would first notice on my rounds that his catheter wasn’t draining properly before his bladder even got that full, let’s be honest! It should have at least 30ml/he for urine output. But say it was still draining but was spotty, and he was retaining and starting to get uncomfortable, then I’d irrigate the catheter until it started running again and his bladder was empty. If I couldn’t get the catheter to work, then I’d re-catheterize with a larger catheter. Hope your bro is ok now!

I learned from a labor and delivery nurse that there are different sizes of catheters. If it's painful, ask for a pediatric size. Years ago I was an ER nurse. I remember an elderly man with dementia was sent in from the nursing home he lived in because he had urinary retention. He was diagnosed with a huuuuge obstruction and was scheduled to go to the OR for surgery. We inserted a s 3 way catheter with a 30 cc bulb. He promptly pulled it out. This happened twice more and the surgeon sent him home as he no longer was obstructed. Dang! No medical training at all and he managed to cure himself.

The one and only catheter I've ever had, I was in MSICU, and I was suffering from brain trauma. The only words I could say were "yes" "bathroom" and "birthday" so because they couldn't get a clear answer when asking if I had to go to the bathroom, they decided a catheter was necessary. Unfortunately, however, the person who had been chosen to do said catheter had never done them before. So needless to say, I HATED the entire experience! I luckily didn't have it in long, and when I was finally able to speak, I told them I didn't like the catheter because I thought I waa fully capable of getting myself to the bathroom if I needed to. I was clearly not. The doctor that came to help do the Catheter was new, and had never done one before. New doc tries three fricken times before being happiest with the insertion, and when hes done, I feel like it is constantly falling out. :S

I have had the unfortunate time of 6 surgeries in a year and a half. I'm currently recovering (7 weeks post surgery) from Spinal Fusion Surgery of L3, L4, L5, and S1. I truly feel getting a catheter, is vile for a guy. One thing I asked for, to avoid the pain, and embarrassment of getting a catheter, is requesting it put in, in the OR, after I'm put under, and demanding it not be there when I wake up. I was given respect to my wishes. I did not want 2 nurses coming to my bedside to put it in me awake upsetting me even more, before surgery. That's usually how it is done too. 2 females, with a male. Male nurses are far and inbetween. Patients CAN speak up about things like this. Men do have modesty, feelings and want privacy respected. Even after spinal fusion, I was able to stand, and walk to the toilet and go, standing up. I did NOT want that thing in me. I think it was better for me, because it made me stand and walk and get out of bed. My 2 cents as a guy, not wanting catheters. Even after all my surgeries, I still have never felt one being given to me, or taken out.

I'm totally biased, as I've used catheters on myself every day for most of my life, but personally I'd say uncomfortability level: 2. Unless you have a UTI or something else going on down there - or your nurse is... not gentle. An issue I find to be quite common with nurses putting in a catheter is they tend to be too rough. Not having had it done to themselves could be a factor there, but more often than not, I find it's the experienced nurses who "have done this a thousand times" who seem more prone to be rough. So, even though they may not know how it feels personally, they're on autopilot doing it. A bizarre mix of experience and inexperience right there, really.

(I giggled all the way through a EKG last week for giggle scale reference) Getting it taken out Id say would be a 4(?). The nurse was super empathetic and was honest that it wouldnt come out as easy as it went in (cause of the now partially inflated balloon). She warned me before the final tug and it stang for like 30 seconds and was totally good. I had a mild sensation that lasted for a few minutes but nothing unexpected or painful. Overall cath experience I would say a 3.5/10 for uncomfortablness. The nurse even let me put my trackies back on instead of changing into a gown because the cord was really long.

What type of Catheter does the NURSE recommend for A Male To Self-Catheter ?? What is a Kuday catheter? Sometimes known as a coude or curved tip catheter, a coudé tip catheter (pronounced “coo-day”) has a slight bend or curve at the insertion tip. This angled insertion tip can navigate past difficult urethral passages for many reasons, including false passages, obstructions, strictures in the urethra, and more.

I wasn't awake when they put mine in, and I don't remember about when it was removed. I wasn't uncomfortable while it was in, I needed it when in the hospital for 4 or 5 days due to a kidney stone. This was a few years after donating my left kidney to a cousin, so it was a scary thing to go through. When I was in training during Hospital Corpsman School at Balboa Hospital in San Diego, we had an old man who was trying to remove his catheter while the balloon was inflated. Everyone was in shock for a second and were like, what are you doing? I don't know how true it is, but the hospital staff told me when I had the catheder said, I was passing in an hour what healthy people did in a day. While no longer in the military or working in medicine, I still have a strong interest in the development of modern medicine, medical technology. I just read yesterday about a study regrowing facial and scalp muscles and other tissues including saliva glands and mentioned a disease or disorder this could help. Maybe someday we won't need to do face transplants, we can just grow the new tissue on the person's face.

I've only ever done them to females (Maternity), and mostly on labouring women - they tend to be more focused on the labour pain to even notice any discomfort from the catheter. They can be difficult too if the head is pushing on their urethra, postnatally if they are retaining urine the comfort of an empty bladder is better than the catheter.

I had a catheter inserted to me once when I was hospitalized. Geez, they thought the anesthesia was in effect fully. Nope, I felt the pain. Worse than an injection or blood drawn out. 1-2 weeks after the catheter was removed, I still felt the sensation of the catheter inside me. I'll rather have my blood drawn out every six hours than a catheter. (I had contracted Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever about 3 years ago, that's why I had blood drawn every six hours) After 4-5 blood drawn, my pain tolerance went up. One of that blood drawing happens to have one nurse who can't find my pulse. I was awake and moving, but he can't find my pulse. (I have a condition where my pulse is usually weak or cannot be felt easily, my mom has it too. We both have iron deficiency anemia as well.)
