with such starfighters, they waste their talented pilots. For example, Wedge was just some cadet from the Imperial Navy, and when he joined the rebelllion, he became one of the most skilled pilot if not the most skilled pilot in the Rebellion's navy. Meanwhile, the Rebellion offer their pilots the best starfighter they could afford, and view them as very valuable, due to the numbers of pilots they have.

The Xwing wasn't the best starfighter the Rebellion could afford. It was the only one they had to offer. Note that production abilities were limited. I still think that Wedge would have done well in the Imperial Navy. The TIE fighter corps operated on an "only the best survive" kind of mentality. TIE's had no shields, no life support and barely any armour. If you survived more than a few months as a TIE pilot, it was purely down to your skill as a pilot rather than the quality of the ship you flew. Pilots who flew TIEs for over a year were considered ace pilots and were eligible to fly the TIE Interceptors and Defenders that actually _had_ shields and decent armour. The fact that Wedge eventually became Squadron Leader of Rogue Squadron, the most decorated Squadron in the entire Rebel Navy, tells me that his piloting skills would have seen him climb the ranks of the Imperial Navy just as well.

Ironically, the Tarkin Doctrine's objectives had already been largely achieved before the 1st death star was active. Before Tarkin went full retard and blew up one of the few planets that people in the core world's considered to be one of the cradles of galactic wide interstellar civilization, the very ominous presence of a star destroyer floating above an individual planet's Capital was enough to achieve the desired effect of his doctrine. As expensive as they are, ISDs were already mass produced weapons of terror that could individually house a large garrison of troops and materials to sustain them that could deal with any rebellious but disorganized planet they were stationed over while providing orbital fire support. With star wars tech, the empire should be easily capable of far more impressive feats of destruction than mass scattering a planet with a giant one multi trillion credit laser. Imagine if they ever reverse engineered certain tech in legends that allows Centerpoint Station to generate potent enough tractor beams to pull entire stars through hyperspace? This thing wasn't even really intended to be a weapon by it's long dead creators but the sheer level of cosmic destruction it could cause in the wrong hands extremely overshadows the deathstar. The ability to destroy rebellious star systems emass with weapons the bend the very fabric of space-time in destructive ways makes the deathstar's ability to instakill a planet with a giant laser pail in comparison.

I never understood why no one in the Empire never designed a basic TIE fighter with shields. Their biggest weakness in combat was that pretty much any hit would disable or destroy them. While Rebel ships could take several hits because of their shields. Yes, they were fast and nimble craft, but if you were to combine that with even relatively weak shields that would give the average TIE more of a chance when they did get hit. While the Empire doesn't really care about the people, from a pure money standpoint and combat readiness standpoint spending a little more on each ship would still be cheaper than having to replace so many ships plus the cost of training a replacement pilot if fewer of them get shot down by Rebel X-wings.
@shadow97742 жыл бұрын
These are reasons why I always thought going with the z95 headhunter would have been a better idea. Good shields, decent speed, decent firepower, adaptable payloads, and a modular design make it a superior choice. Especially when it costs 60k for a tie and 80k for a z95. You can assume the empire would receive a discount for ordering ships in bulk, so the tie for them is actually cheaper than it would be in reality if they hadn't bought so many. Their abundance and disposable nature would make them cheaper once they hit the domestic market. If the empire bought the z95 in bulk I imagine they could get them for 70k with a hyperdrive also being installed. The ability to deploy a squadron without the aid of additional support is a big bonus, and adds a lot more flexibility. Be it having to deploy from another ship, or jumping to hyperspace. Makes a big difference especially when in the outer rim where imperial control isn't as strong.
@FastTquick2 жыл бұрын
Three reasons: 1. The Empire wanted to manufacture their starfighters as quickly and cheaply as possible. If that meant getting rid of shields would be a cost-saving measure, then they'll gladly take that sacrifice. 2. The Empire treats their pilots as disposable assets who they indoctrinate to give their lives to defending the Empire and their Emperor no matter what the costs. 3. The Empire has trillions of candidates within its territory to recruit into the starfighter corps who would quickly replace any pilots who lose their lives. So the Empire doesn't have a pilot shortage just like the Rebellion does.

The TIE series not having shields, is a huge design flaw. However, not having FTL I actually understand. The drives are expensive for one and when you need to outfit a lot of ships, that is a huge drain. Also, think about it, the ships are small. There is no 'refresher'. This means you are flying many many hours with in a tiny car, can't pull off to the side of the road and there are no pit stops until you link up with a carrier anyways. Best solution? Have a TIE Advanced Mk 2 or variant Interceptors that do have hyperdrives for tactical strikes. Possibly design a short range drive to 'hyper hop' strategically. The Jedi could get away with small FTL ships because they'd just trance themselves into a coma until they get to where they are going.

I would bring in the Tie Avenger, Starwings, Tie Hunters, and so much more.. The one thing I really had against Star Wars Rebels is they started off with ISD's when they should have started off with Victory Class, Gladiators, and other ships first. ISD's should have only appeared once construction of the Tie Factories started.

As much as I love the experimental TIEs like the Defender and the V-38 assault fighter They were too expensive to field in numbers the Empire needed. The TIE Interceptor was a good medium ground. Good enough that it could be a nightmare to any but the best Rebel pilots, affordable enough that the Empire could afford to spread them out so that it was likely that they would actually encounter Rebel Starfighters. One ship that I wish Alan had included was the Alpha Xg-1 Star Wing which was Thrawn's first attempt to build a fighter that was comparrable with the Rebellion's fighters. It might not have been as good at dogfighting as the X-Wing, but it did have an interesting weapons load including laser cannons, ion cannons and two pods that could carry 12 proton torpedoes. The interesting thing was that it could launch all missiles at once which would be great for hit and run assaults.This would have been a good ship for the Imperial Remnant to have near the end of the civil war when the former Imperials had to behave more like rebels.

Since the larger star destroyers lacked point defenses Thrawn's doctrine is cheaper and more effective the the Tarkin Doctrine over all in my opinion. Emperor Palpatine was obsessed with power and prohibitively expensive death stars really killed the Empire in my opinion. @casbot712 жыл бұрын
The Tie/LN was a *false economy.* The cost of having to not only replace needlessly destroyed fighters but _train up new pilots from scratch_ meant it ended up costing the Empire a lot more than a high end fighter. Then there was the reputational cost of having the standard fighter being so fragile that it could be taken down by a bowcaster (fired by a blind man). Having a fighter that could take _a lot of punishment_ would have been a better option, as they were usually operating near their own facilities and support so that being able to limp to base or be rescued was a far more viable option than for the raiders who needed to hyperspace (with an intact hyperdrive) to get to safety. In a pitched battle, a damaged "tanky" Tie that had shields and heavy armour could immediately withdrawal back to a hanger, and the Empire could repair it and get it back into action for far less cost than a new Tie and the whole training cycle of a pilot. And a Tie that could take a few hits would give the pilot more confidence to go after kills - a pilot in a standard LN had to always be concerned about even glancing fire and be ready to back off as they were delicate.
@eonaon69142 жыл бұрын
It's actually a sunk cost fallacy brought upon the military mindset used to militia defense. Most officers were probably used to the economy of scale based upon a planetary budget. You can have good fast or cheap but only pick two since you cant use all the money for planetary defense from a population, infrastructure and other costs on a planetary budget needed to satisfy the citizens had to be paid as well. Once you have multiple cash sources to fund the military, and while the empire military was vast so was the source of money fueling it. Heck the things didnt even have partial shielding which is inherently dumb since while space is vast there is so much garbage in orbit and so many micrometeoroids and just random things out there. That scene of tie fighters entering asteroid fields? they should have been dead in seconds after entering the first 1/16th layer because of micro meteors and dust going 10000 MPH against the hull.

Star Wars Squadrons is also fun but I think it fails to show the differences quite as well since they had to make the Tie just as good as an X-Wing which isn't really accurate. It makes sense for them from a gameplay standpoint but its not accurate. X-Wing the miniature game doesn't have these problem quite to the same scale since a fair game can be 5 X-Wings vs. 9 Ties.

The viewport is restrictive, you have no visibility in any other direction, and the sensors are absolute trash. And yet, despite these flaws, the cockpit is absolutely massive. There's so much free space in there that you can actually cram two or three more people in. Such a waste of mass and space that could be used by superior engines or weapon capacitors. This is especially annoying given that the cockpit is the one element that they never changed. I bet the TIE Defender would be even more dangerous if the pilot could actually see shit.

Now rogue squadron says the x-wing has them and was the first fighter EVER to carry them but they were only 80% effective, allowing the pilots to feel the g forces so they wouldn't rip the ships apart in tight turns. the whole inertial compensator was made to justify star ships accelerating at 1000's of g's... which was never supposed to happen.

I'll say it: The problem with the TIE fighter isn't the design, but the implementation. A cheap craft with exceptional maneuverability and speed coupled with good enough armaments is a great concept. The shields don't seem to save any fighters I've seen in the movies etc, and hyperdrives arn't necessary for a ship made to defend its carrier. No what killed the TIE is plotarmour, and that the imperial doctrine was to carry to few of them. The likes of A-wings suit the Imperial II design much better, because of its very limited hangar bays, but you tell me that if someone showed up with, say, a Venator filled to the brim with TIE/LN's the rebels wouldn't start eyeing those hyperdrives right away.
@scottthewaterwarrior2 жыл бұрын
The lack of hyperdrive and life support is acceptable, but no shields is what really hurt the TIE fighters. When novice pilots get blown up for making even one tiny mistake, they are never given the opportunity to learn, meaning most of your force is always going to be fresh faced recruits with no combat experience. Heck, even your elite ace pilots could easily get taken out my a micro-meteor. That was the whole point of shield on spaceships originally: not to stop eneny fire, but to prevent an unlucky bit of space junk from puncturing your viewport!

So the ideal loadout for a large crew would be a gozanti class cruiser flanked by X-wings and/or TIE defenders.

The TIE defender is badass, but let's face it, those three interceptor wings look goofy as hell
@Shearper22 жыл бұрын
though, it is from legends and I believe only featured in a single game, one of my favourite TIE fighters was the TIE Hunter from SW: Rogue Squadron 3 if memory serves me right.

Should've sticked to the V-Wings. Costs the same as the TIE Interceptor and slightly cheaper than the X-Wing too. And most importantly WAY better than the TIE Fighter

I mean thinking about it I don't get how the Tie LN is called an space supority fighter... As it's meant to be one of many vs a few not the reverse which on Earth we typically think of when we hear Air Supority Fighter. How ever in the Empire could have called it that like the US called the F-117 a Stealth fighter when it reality it was just an inderdicter a sub set of attackers... So to make people feel better about flying them... Could also be for propganda reasons.
@JettQuasar2 жыл бұрын
The Empire's focus was on large capital ships so the fighters were cheaper and less effective.

I am convinced the Arc170 was overdesigned on purpose so its failures would promote a doctrinal shift to smaller, more disposable fighters as the Empire preferred. Devious Chessmaster that Sidious.

Is the Imperial Gauntlet Starfighter a type of U Wing like in the Rebel Fleet? They look very similar to my non space fairing eyes!
