Great information. We recently replaced our 50 gal tank heater with a Navian NPE 240A condensing tankless unit. It has the flow rate to easily run multiple showers and appliances in our home at a +65 temp differential in the midwest in winter. Our install was on the higher end that you discussed because we also added a recirculation line to make use of built in recirc pump and storage tank in the Navien unit. I've had no problems with the cold water sandwich. Hot water at the fixtures arrives in about 15 to 20 seconds. We will be adding a softener system soon to hopefully minimize scale build up and improve longevity of the unit.

That sounds great! Thank you very much for sharing your experience here. I've long said that a professional brand tankless installed by a trained professional will leave customers happy for many years. (And nothing beats those Naviens!) Have a great day.

Thank you so much for your honesty and straight forward information. I'm thinking about a new build on a property in a state in the North and just happened upon your video. Your presentation was well worth my search and my questions were all addressed. I've worked for contractors in the past and I identify with how consumers call and complain about all the others prices, I've told them you want quality or what? They go cheap then complain forever and later on, then we are hired to "fix" the cheap they went prior. It's no joke, you get what you pay for in the long run.

+mike cioka uh huh. and if the gas line is not the right, or something not correct with the vent, it could shorten the life of it or even be dangerous. A lot of people think they are more capable than they are. Usually that's ok, and I have seen TWO DIY'er's in over 10 years that actually did it right. I will also say that have seen hundreds of "professionals" who did it WRONG. (which is why I harp on hiring ones trained for tankless water heaters with good reputations for doing so) So maybe you are number 3. odds are not real good. Just because it's working does not mean it's working perfect and I have units run for 2 or 3 years and then have a big problem develop that cost a lot to fix not under warranty because it was not installed correctly. the answer is ALWAYS the same from whoever installed it; " I don't understand, it's been working fine for X years." I wish you luck, but I will never get behind gas tankless as a DIY project unless the DIY'er is trained in gas appliance installation. Too many people willing to risk their families safety to save money. I've seen a lot more than you guys.
@mikecioka11809 жыл бұрын
+Scott Gregg i follow the manufacture recommendation :) and i paid an inspector to double check the gas line. I recommend to doit because is not expensive and if something was not right u can fix it before something bad happen
@scottnra9 жыл бұрын
+mike cioka I hate to tell you this but inspectors don't know if the vent or gas piping is right, or else I would not have been sent on very many calls behind untrained "professionals". People think inspectors know about proper installations but they don't. I have done training classes for inspectors as the Noritz Rep and The Rinnai Rep and believe me they don't know squat and they are not responsible, you are. No way I would count on that at all. Also if your venting causes a HX failure in a few years, you'll have fun ripping it apart to replace the core or you'll be tossing it and buying another. If the gas is not correct is can soot up the burners over time, harm gas valves or controls, cause condensation in the HX that will eat it up, (so can improper venting) code out when other gas appliances are running, etc. Improper venting can also lead to CO poisoning of people in the home. (That would qualify as something bad happening I think) You are willing to take the risk. Some are. I can't support it though. Again I've seen a lot more as a rep, trainer, servicing dealer and installer for major brands. I've been on many hundreds of trouble calls to figure stuff out in two states and almost every one had been "inspected". Also, if something were to happen and your homeowners insurance figures out that you installed a gas appliance yourself, it gives them the "out"they need to not cover the loss. Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

I considered a tankless gas hot water heater until I saw your video. Both my parents are 80+ years old and there house is 40 years old. I’m the one taking care of them, which means I’m the one paying for any problem that happens in their home. Having said that, I have to be realistic about how much longer they will be in their home. That means a tank is the right choice. They are in Houston and I commute from my home in Las Vegas. Because I work from the house, I’m able to stay in Houston for weeks on end doing my job. It also allows me to get my parents to the doctor, grocery store, cook clean, etc. I should stay full time in Houston because that’s where the office is however, I was (before COVID-19) working in the Middle East one month in and one month out. So, to pay extra for something that will last 20 years really isn’t a consideration at this point. Thanks for the advice.

jroar123 You are most likely totally correct. I don't think I would either in that situation. However for the record, In VA now most tank heater prices have got so far out of whack that sometimes a non-condensing tankless can actually be cheaper of even money. I would go for a more expensive option in your situation. Thank you for watching! You share some great tips on tankless installation however, your comment that only a "licensed" plumber should do the work is self serving. There are stationary engineers (multiskilled journeymen), boiler personnel and other experienced trades people with great plumbing skills that are very capable of doing the job. A license gives you the ability to do business but it says nothing about the quality of work. There are some plumbers that are very good and others that are mediocre. Just because someone does not have a license, does not mean their installation will fail. Its an absurd point. But I do agree that who ever does the job needs to have the experience in a few areas like 1) structural (securely hanging the unit, securing pipe) 2) plumbing (sweating pipes, valves, modifying gas lines & pressures as needed, PRV & condensate drain lines) 3) installing proper venting 4) installing electrical if needed.
@scottnra3 жыл бұрын
Tony Rodrigues The point is these are NOT DIY projects. Many people overestimate their skills and even a licenses insured professional needs to be trained on how to install them. AT least someone with a license and insurance gives the consumer some protection. Thank you for watching! Great Video, Just had a RL75I, (Rinnai) by my propane supplier. About $900. was 699, but needed extra vent pipe. Replaced an electric tankless. My question do I need to address the problem of moths (and other critters) being ingested by the intake air? Other U Tube videos show the fan, and heat exchanger being blown out with air, and full of bugs. Why is the intake air not filtered, and if not how is the best way to do it?
@scottnra8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Vagg It's not fitlered because restricting the airflow will effect combustion. Bugs can be an issue but rarely are. I pulled apart my 10 year old units and found 1 stink bug in a fan. If you have the vent termination near an outside light then is can be a problem and I have seen that but it is not normal and that is a poor installation. You should have no trouble with bugs int he fan as a rule.

Scott, I need to upgrade our current 40 gallon natural gas water heater (basically in a swimming-pool-like hole that the former owners dug out in the dirt crawlspace basement) to an external natural gas water heater mounted on the back of the house (typical red brick house). It is my understanding that this eliminates the issue of having to power vent it anywhere or install any extra vents. Our gas pipes are old, so I'm pretty sure that we need a larger line from the gas meter to be installed. I understand that these need some type of electrical connected for a blower fan, and of course the water pipes extended. How do I know if I gas meter supplies enough gas for one of these? I figure that to be on the safe side, we need no more or less than a 8GPM. I'm located in Atlanta, Georgia. I know that it varies with areas of the country and contractors and such. Each job is different, but how much show it cost for something like this? They would need to run probably 30-40 feet of gas pipe, about 10-15 feet of water pipe and an electrical connection.
@scottnra8 жыл бұрын
+jmr1068204 In ATL most of the gas tankless will get you that 8gpm. Rinnai is local to you in Peachtree City! Your gas company can tell you if your meter is big enough but you'll have to tell them everything that burns gas in the home too. Yes, you need power to it, yes, your vent kit will be very short. Yes. you'll need a dedicated gas line so you don't have to mess with the existing piping at all. Those connection lengths are no problem. your installer will figure out proper pipe size etc.

Hey Scott I have a 1100 sq ft ranch in PA I have oil heat for my furnace (hot water radiators) that also provides hot water (coil) window air conditioners and small I think 25 gallon propane tank for stove flame. I recently changed the well pump added Aquavar Solo 1AS15 controller and a water softener system. What would you do to supply all the needed utilities needed. I want to abandon the oil tank. All electric, heat pump, combi boiler, ductless, I’m really all over the place maybe your experience could recommend a plan.
@scottnra5 жыл бұрын
Cisco Kid 1179 Man this is an EASY one! haha. Find a GOOD local NAvien dealer (Should be easy in PA) and have them install a Navien Combi, LP gas and get a bigger tank from your LP company (preferably not Amerigas) The Modulating/condensing combi will get you WAY more efficient, and still provide plenty of hot water. It will also take up a lot less space. You'll keep all the comfort you are used to and have lower energy bills. Option #2 Fujitsu multi zone Mini split. Why option #2? it's going to cost more. But on the upside it is even more efficient than hydronic, you can have multiple zones and more control over your temperatures in each area. If you have not already done it, INSULATE that house FIRST! Insulation is a fuel bill you pay once that last forever regardless of you heat source. Thank you for watching. Great video Scott!! My wife and I live in the Northeast and we are looking into a Tankless gas hot water system to replace our existing gas tank system which was installed back in 2008. We currently have 1 bath but may consider adding a 2nd bath later on. We have a very good licensed plumber we use and we definitely plan to use him to do the installation if we decide to move forward. I don't like the idea of throwing money away to heat the water in our current tank all the time so I'm all for efficiency and cost savings over the long term. You also make a very good point regarding your homeowners insurance possibly not covering any damage caused by improper installation if not using a licensed professional. On an investment such as this it's just not worth taking a chance on.

Nice Video, I just purchased a Navien NPE240A and having doubts. Im reading a lot of bad reviews for Navien. I hired a licensed contractor but i'm worried about the product and customer service. Have you dealt with Navien products or mainly Rinnai?
@scottnra8 жыл бұрын
I have dealt mainly with Rinnai and Noritz but honestly hear nothing but great things with Navien. Most of the bad reviews tankless units get are from screwed up installations. It does take training and advanced knowledge of these systems to install them properly and a bad install make take a year or so to cause a problem. If you have a trained installer, I think you will be happy.

I noticed when my wife was taking a shower lights in our home started flickering when she was done and water was off they stopped. what can be causing this problem?
@scottnra7 жыл бұрын
Improper DIY wiring? Not enough panel? This is one of the reasons why, an electrician should be involved if installing an electric tankless. It may or may not be a good fit for your home. Also, some of these models do not manage power well and slam your panel when they come on, unlike Stieble Eltron and Seisco. That would do it as well.

Thank you for all your free info. I have rent houses. One of my water heater tanks is10 years old and leaking. So I'm considering tankless. Since I'm not going to be living in the home, would it still be cost efficient as far as me not having to replace the tankless as often as replacing a tank?
@scottnra8 жыл бұрын
+Lillith Jones As an investor, unless you really need a write off, you are probably better off financially just replacing the tank. The Tenant pays the energy bills, and they might be gone in a year or so anyway. It's just my advice of course, but I would keep money spent on rentals to a minimum. (Unless you are selling very upscale rentals and that would be different) Hope that helps.

What do you recommend for a 3 bathroom 2 story home in South Florida? I am interested in an electric tank less retrofit water heater to replace my standard electric water heater now. How long can I expect it to last with a proper unit for my home and a good install?
@scottnra9 жыл бұрын
+jblaust In Florida an electric tankless would do a great job. If you have good water an electric can last 15 - 20 years. (of course so could a tank) But they really do well in those warm climates. I'd still go with a 100 amp unit or more though. Seisco RA28 or equal by Eemax. Here is the Seisco amzn.to/1YNi5jd

In replacing a tank with a tankless water heater that’s located in the middle of the house and a recirculation pump is installed, would multiple recirculation lines have to be installed throughout the house?
@scottnra4 жыл бұрын
Mike Bartholomew If you already have a recirc line and pump in the house that's working, I don't see why you'd need to add any more lines. If you are trying to add new recirc, it would be best to get a return line to the furthest point of the hot water mains you can access. Navien's NPE-A model also has a built in recirc pump and buffer tank that can be set up several different ways. Your local dealer can advise you on what's best for your house. Thank you for watching. Scott Gregg thanks for the reply! My tank water heater is a lil more than 23 years old...house was built in 1996. Do you think a recirc pump and lines were installed back then with this unit? I don’t see a pump near the water heater, and since the farthest plumbing fixture (master bathroom sink) is really not that far, I don’t suspect they installed one. Since the farthest sink in our master bath has a mismatched hot water line (when I upgraded the faucet, the line that came with it was too short so I had to add an extension, but the extension line is slightly bigger, so there’s less water pressure...I’ll need to fix that), I tested the other sink in the master bath. When I turned on the hot water (first time this morning), it took 23 seconds till I felt it start to warm up and approx 40 seconds or so till it reached its max temp. In addition, I had a supposedly reputable plumbing company come out yesterday and gave me a quote to replace my tank with a Navien tankless. $3,800 to install since my tank heater shares some of the fixtures with the furnace, $600 to add a new vent pipe through the roof, and he said maybe $600 to have a roofer finished the exterior part of the vent pipe and roofing around it. I live in Springdale, Arkansas.
@scottnra4 жыл бұрын
Actually around here they run about the same form the guys that know what they are doing. Running the new vent is important and must be done correctly from the middle of a home. When they are closer to an outside wall it helps a lot. THat does not sound unreasonable to me at all and remember, I have nothing to sell you. :-)

Tankless water heater and split unit for heat? I need your assistance. Thanks
@scottnra5 жыл бұрын
Short term costs would be to leave it as it is if is all works. Long Term best would be to install a modulating condensing combi boiler that will do both domestic and heat, controlled with separate zones for each unit. But it would still only use one gas/electric bill. These are very efficient, but more costly to install. A tankless water heater can't be used as a boiler by code. Look at the Navien combi from a local dealer if that sounds like a good option. I think that would cost less than two totally separate systems, use a lot less dule and provide way better comfort.

Very helpful video, Scott. Thank you for the education! Question: there are some newer tankless systems ( Noritz EZTR for example) that have connections/fittings on top, and use existing gas pipe (meaning smaller) and existing 3" vent, supposedly saving install time and money. Would you recommend looking at this type of tankless system? This is a retrofit situation, replacing a tank system. Thank you!
@scottnra7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! That Noritz unit is VERY well thought out. I would not expect it to do a big body spray system or 4 showers at the same time in a northern state, but for many average homes they work great.

Check the video out from the comment above and consider it with the house you are building or have. 2 baths or under with standard low flow fixtures should work for one of the higher amp units.

Go to the Website and use the dealer locator to find a dealer near you with a great reputation. You'll end up paying less and getting a better job in the long run.

What electric tankless water heater would you recommend for my application. We have a 4 bed 2 bath home about 1800 sq feet if this helps and we live in Central Florida. What tank would you think would best fit our family needs. My wife loves filling the big jacuzzi tub just about nightly! Just 3 people in the home.
@scottnra6 жыл бұрын
I'm a big Stieble Eltron fan. I'd go with at least a 10KW to be safe or up to the 14kw for the higher flow tub filler. It's really more about your home's electrical service than flow or money down there. The cost between a 10 and a 14 is not much different. It's a great application! Hope that helps.

Hey Scott, I know you have stated you're not a fan of the home stores I assume Home Depot is in there. I looked at Rinnai but they do not do electric. I am in AZ so that is good , also only a 1350' home. I know you didn't want to mention brands but if you couple send me a note on a few reasonable brands and where to buy them, I would appreciate it. Thanks, TC

I don't have any problems mentioning brands haha. I just will only recommend ones that I KNOW are good products with companies that stand behind them. Are you trying to go electric or gas. In most of AZ you have a choice. I always like the gas models better but in that area electric should work as well.

If a person is buying a new home and can upgrade to a tankless water heater for $2,000 more, is it worth it? or Will you have problems down the road, because of who installed it?

If it is installed correctly, there should be no problems down the road until the unit gets old. (like any other water heater) If hey are offering, you kind of have to hope and think they know what they are doing. I would say, yes, it's worth it!

Hi, I am considering to install tankless water heater (Rinnai RUC98iN 26" h x 18.5" w x 10" d ) in crawling space 48" height . . in central NJ ( 3 full bath, 4+2Kids occupancy) 1.) do you see any obvious issues? ( crawling space has windows) I have burnham baseboard water heater there) 2.) cost is expensive, one estimate i have is 6k :( .. , on Amazon it costs for 1300$ ,so for dealer it must be cheap, and so labor is ~4700$ .. I think it is too much.. but have no reference on price. (This includes removing old 50 gal tank water heater, install tankless and permits) 3.) do you have a recommended installer in this area?, As I have gas fired burnham , I have gas connections ( not sure if they can use same connections)
@scottnra9 жыл бұрын
+sendit34 $4700 is about the going rate in most of this area too. There is more to it than just screwing ti to the wall and hooking up the water lines. You most likely need gas piping work done to handles the new heater as they require a bigger gas line than a tank heater. They also need special venting that must be installed properly or your heater may not last very long and even be DANGEROUS. Save up until you can afford to have it professionally installed. If you buy one from the Amazon link below the video, it will dave you a little money, but still you should have it installed by a trained, licensed and insured plumbing or heating contractor.
@evgenyananyev71748 жыл бұрын
+Scott Gregg 4700 just a labor for probably not even a full day of labor is outrageous. For 4700 as a reputable HVAC company we installed 92% efficiency furnace which requires 2 NEW PVC FLU PIPES (not one like tankless) new ductwork and air conditioner and yes sometimes we do change gas pipe to 3/4 which is not that difficult. And that takes 3 days to do... What I'm thinking you base your prices of the cost of the equipment and that's not right to do
@LimpVengeance8 жыл бұрын
Would a smaller tankless heater be suited for in floor heating. I imagine the thermostat controling the pump witch kicks the unit on and off. The water ( or water / glycol mix) would be clean and most often be at a reasonable intake temp compared to well or city line temp or would be shortly after running a few mins. What are your thoughts and concerns about this. A few im curious about is air build up in lines like a traditional boiler has air bleeds. And would a water glycol mix be a good or bad idea.
@scottnra8 жыл бұрын
I think I addressed most of this in a reply to your FB message. Air bleeding is imperative. If you don't get all the air out, it won't work at all. I'm hoping you know at least the basics of radiant floor heat. There is a little more to it than just running a bunch or pipe in a floor. don'e properly it is the best heat in the worked. Done incorrectly, it can range from just not working to being and energy sucking money pit. Proper insulation, pipe length per loop and routing, pump sizing, manifolds with flow meters, gauges and thermometers on them, etc. all matter. It's a bit more than I can put into a YT comment. Haha If you understand all that, you'll probably be fine. If not, you might want to do a bit more homework first or hire it out. AMny people try to do radiant on the cheap, only to find out later they made a big mistake....

Scott, hello again, You gave me some great information here. I am leary of the gas, venting & all due to the carbon monoxide. The guys are coming this friday to install a gas tankless heater, they explained the venting thru the roof, the main company is out of Indianapolis & one in Lafayette, IN The guy told me 'he' would be coming down from Indianapolis, the one to install the vent pipe, makes me feel better the specialist is going to be doing the work. I'll let you know how it goes on this 6-7 hour job. I didn't realize it would take that longbut glad they'll be taking their time & doing it right.

Honestly it depends... on retrofit, after paying for the electrical work, it's a toss up in my opinion. New construction in an apartment or condo, with today's standard low flow fixtures, yes. New construction 2.5 bath home or less in a southern climate, yes. Northern climate, probably not. If you're in FL absolutely, if your in MI you're probably not going to be happy. 4-5k yikes....540.00 for a standard tank and 2 hours to install......with soft water could last 10 years or more..... tankless maybe saves 8.00/month plus needed flushes 120./00/yr the math does not add up....
@scottnra5 жыл бұрын
Everyone does not have the same HW needs. Some people with larger families need more. Also if you put the water treatment you mentioned on them you'll possibly NEVER have to flush it and if you have good public water you won't have to either. (15-20 is average for a good tankless properly installed with decent water) Plus, they don't lime up and blow out the bottom like many tank heaters do causing thousands in damage and mess. No one choice is right for everyone, but there are a lot of people very well served by a good tankless and I'll never have a home without one.

Scott, Great information, I trust your advise, However I hope I didn't mess up..... My story I went out and bought a ( Navien CH210 Tankless Water Heater Boiler Combi Unit 8 GPM Natural Gas CH-210 ) before I saw your video, now I'm a little concerned.... I've always done my own plumbing, water tanks, fixtures, so I thought I can do this! Well I'm concerned now. Just hooking it up right and tweaking all the things right... I did get 3 bids before I went out and bought it, in fact that's what made me think I can do it myself. $5,695.00 - $5,800.00 I'm in Houston, Tx. ---- What kind of advise can you give me.? I'm going to do as much home work as I can, I know there are little secrets that will make it easier.. sincerely, Larry
@scottnra9 жыл бұрын
Larry Mosier Larry, the biggest thing you need to worry about is your VENTING! You need to know 100 certain that you did it right, and did not combine it with any other appliance venting. The Vent is more dangerous than the gas piping. The Navien is a great product and pretty forgiving, but if your gas piping is not properly sized for the addition of this unit, the Navien may be fine, but you can cause problems with your other gas fired appliances by the Navien basically "sucking" what it wants right out of the pipes while starving anything else for fuel that might be running at the same time. This can cause problems right away or a couple years down the road with those appliances. As for the "Boiler" side of things, you need to know that you have the primary/secondary piping correct. Improper flow can shorten the life of the Navien, and also make the house not heat properly when winter comes. Frankly a Navien combi unit installed for under $6k is a STEAL! Here it would be closer to $8k depending on the work involved. Please folks, don't install these things yourself! Just because you know how to solder, or glue pipe together and it not leak does not mean you can do it correctly or safely! Larry, I hope this works out for you. You really need at the very least a qualified contractor (hopefully who is not a jerk) to come check it out. You may have done a fine job! Contact a certified installer with a good reputation and pay them to come check it out maybe?

This video is now dated. I don't think Tankless water heaters were ever really a luxury item, it was just a supply and demand thing. They were just more common in Europe and the demand was low here because fuel is cheap. With Current regulations driving up the prices of Tank Water Heaters, Tankless water heaters are actually cheaper.

Scott Gregg I would have to somewhat disagree with the tankless is the way to go on a new construction bc it depends on how many people in the home and maybe even how frugal they are....electric hybrids are actually the best solution for a home with two people and maybe one child if they live in the southern states now northern states or anyone with a lot of people in the home a tankless maybe the best due to the hot water availability but they are still not the most cost effective or efficient

RV's are very different from homes when it comes to water. Most use very low flow fixtures and have on board RV water heaters on them. THey cost a lot less than these too. I have seen it done though.
