Considering the political climate here, it would have been better to learn more languages, especially the native version of our bordering country. It would give more empathy and love to those who are trying to communicate. As a side note, I was born in the age of writing in cursive and just saw that the national archives are asking for volunteers to read it. It shows how languages and even writing styles and cultural context and linguistics change in our own native tongue. Relying on translation with technologies comes with its own errors and downfalls in so many ways. It's just all so fascinating but also sad. Communication is key to building personal connections! This is eye opening. In India, we have people looking at Japan and saying we dont need english. Meanwhile all Japanese want to excel in english 🤷♀
@user-jt3dw6vv4x14 сағат бұрын
I mean I can understand why someone in India may feel that way. English was adopted out of a necessity due to the sheer ethnic diversity and it came with colonisation. Japan's relationship with English has no nationalist undertones

We are all the same humans all over the world. Most residents of any country don't know much about the rest of the world. There are plenty of Americans who are just as clueless to the rest of the world's geography as well. Same for the UK and Korea or China.

Mostly true for large countries, where you can easily live your whole life never leaving the country, never using foreign products, never consuming foreign media. In small countries, 'abroad' is physically a lot closer, and a lot more things in daily life will come from other countries. So it is pretty natural for citizens of smaller nations to pick up a bit more world knowledge.

When someone cites TikTok as their primary news source, that surely can't be a good sign... I can understand saying X or KZbin, but a site catered to 8-second reels with the average user being 12 years old? It's a bit more forgivable for someone to incorrectly point to Canada instead of the US, but to mistake Russia for North America? That's egregious enough of an error to justify revoking your high school diploma. Or maybe the Japanese education system needs to revamp how they teach geography. I think I'm willing to give more leeway to a country as monolithic as Japan for being ignorant about the rest of the world. If someone only speaks Japanese and has no intention to travel outside of the country, I guess having this knowledge isn't really relevant to their everyday life. It's by no means excusable, but it does make sense from a pragmatic standpoint. Since Japan is ethnically homogenous, there's much less of a necessity to learn English and interact with foreigners unless the person has a job where they're directly interacting with non-Japanese. It comes down to utility. If there isn't a tangible incentive for Japanese people to learn the language, they'll unlikely see a reason to make the effort.

I'm surprised by what one guy says, that Singapore is close to USA. Even if you don't know the location of USA and Singapore, how stupid can it get to make that statement. One is in Asia (SE Asia) obviously and the other is in North America! Still the Japanese are slightly better than the Americans, but then again they have little knowledge about countries in Asia, which is where they are. But at least compared to the Americans, they are honest about their lack of knowledge in those areas where as Americans just think they know all even when they don't and the misinformation they get!

14:50 I see what she's saying, but here's the thing. In English we have a saying: No pain, no gain. If you don't try your best, you won't succeed. But on the other hand, one can't succeed without failing a whole bunch of times, and this is especially true for language learning, something I have experience with, and that means not minding mistakes. So even though Japanese people may feel awkward or self-conscious about speaking English, they need to imagine what it's like in reverse. Foreigners in Japan should know Japanese, but they are the ones stepping out of their comfort zone. Conversely, Japanese people going abroad should know English, and not rely on Google Translate or whatever because I've had to deal with that once or twice and it's largely inefficient, but luckily I knew the other person's language, even if just barely, despite them being the foreigner. Learning and using another language means stepping out of the comfort zone. Making mistakes in a foreign language is normal, and speaking it may not be easy, but mistakes should not be embarrassing or condemned. It's better to try and "fail" than to not try at all. If someone gives you a hard time, screw them. You don't fail by making mistakes, you fail by giving up.

Why would it make any difference? I thought the map with the UK at the centre was standard over the world for two reasons, one being that Britain has the middle time zone (GMT) and the other that the map splits up the pacific ocean meaning there's more central land mass representation
@SyiepherzeКүн бұрын
@@WIllz2GOTA I mean if you used the typical Eurocentric map, and you wanted to gauge the shortest distance from Japan to the US (one of Japan's closest Western allies), since the Pacific is cut in half, you'd need to reach the right edge of the map and restart on the left side. It's a bit off-putting. Since the Pacific is more familiar to East Asian countries it just seems more reasonable to keep the ocean intact

I think the low Yen value is making Japanese stay at home, less interested in foreign affairs and speaking another language; and Japanese people always like to say they are shy but actually I think it's the reverse of how making mistakes is not socially acceptable and less forgiven than in Western culture and that plays a role in their poor English speaking ability. And how that plays out when foreign laborers make mistakes on the job in Japan. Tourists are different, they bring in the money, but workers, especially those in low wage labor make a mistake, are they forgiven for being foreigners or treated more harshly? Also do these young people vote in their own elections?
@yumibelle_jКүн бұрын
I think these Japanese don't know that there are a small group of Japanese entrepreneurs that are selling Japanese goods online to overseas customers with huge markups and probably making quite a profit. I've bought some things on Ebay and the prices of cheap items are often 3x or more above domestic prices. At first I thought they were foreigners in Japan but no these are legit Japanese sellers. So they are doing independent business using English.

In my 40 years of life as an Asian, I have never heard of Japan as a nation that emphasized on education. They don't even teach the correct history of their own country. And as a matter of fact, Japan has not had a significant technological innovation since the 80s, due to the Plaza Accord.
