@Bryan W I don’t find it irrational at all. I chose my path to medicine strictly on helping Sick individuals and not for a paycheck. I’m not going to mention what I think I’m worth based on a simple comment. Still, the reality is that I’m blessed to have the opportunity to learn and hopefully someday spread my knowledge to others that comes after me. It is not always about politics, just my unbiased opinion.

@@joshwilliams6317 Hey fellow Josh and med student! lol I'm not going into mediine for the money - there are plenty of careers that don't cost 300 grand and all of my twenties. What I AM saying is if I have to choose between a 40 hour per week community gig or an academic gig that pays LESS for MORE work, I'd choose community. I'm married and have a kid on the way - the appeal of teaching isn't worth the other sacrifices, you know?

@@joshmcgoobut academics doesn’t pay less if anything those in private practice get paid less with increasing overhead and decreasing reimbursement rates from Medicare and Medicaid and other insurance companies. Plus I heard not all positions at prestigious hospitals are academic positions and many of them are actually clinical positions that have a lot of flexibility. Also lots of potential for incentive bonus pay and you get raises annually at those prestigious hospitals. Also from what I’m aware of you can advance within your department in those hospitals and get into higher positions allowing for more growth.

I've been an academic anesthesiologist/intensivist for 5 years now and I really wish someone had come up with this list for me PRIOR to me deciding on what type of job I wanted. I think I still would have chose the academic path anyway but man am I feeling the politics of Academic more and more as the years go by. It is the WORST part of practicing medicine. Another terrible thing is that in Academia, they put so much weight on "researchers" that those types get more respect than they deserve in the clinical setting. The worst clinicians I have ever seen are heavy researchers because they dedicate so little of their time and energy to perfecting their clinical skills. I find that I often have to clean up their messes. It is profoundly frustrating.

I’m a medical student currently in my clinical rotations, and am very interested in DR. Does it matter if one matches to a “lower tier” community residency program? I’ve heard mixed things from a handful of radiologists I’ve asked; some say it then becomes harder to go on to do a fellowship if you’re coming from a “lower tier” community program. Obviously I’ll do my best to match to the best program I can, but just wanting to weigh the risk of not matching to a good program. What’s your take on this?

Academic vs non-academics is generally a more appropriate description. Most specialties don't have a large "private practice" presence. Radiology is unique in that there are still a lot of private gigs. I think this can be misleading to those who have no idea what private practice vs hospital based practice is.
@xplicitgoofy1015
@xplicitgoofy1015 Жыл бұрын
I know he isn’t in academic practice plus from what I’m aware of is that not all positions at prestigious hospitals are “academic positions” and they also offer clinical positions. Plus in some cases being at a hospital pays far better then that of a private practice position because of the incentive bonuses they receive and the huge salary raises they get as they progress in their department each year and become better. So I think private practice doesn’t need to be glorified I know it’s amazing but if you think about it the insurance companies and billing is mad annoying

@@southeastAF yeah that’s so true like I watch this Orthopedic Spine Surgeon on KZbin who is in private practice and he always complains about his compensation due to the rising overhead and decreasing reimbursement rates. And it’s just so surprising to me because usually orthopedic Spine surgeons that work in big prestigious hospitals live so comfortably and don’t complain as much as he is I mean he said he loves his job but it’s just insane the amount he complains with current circumstances of how our economy is with inflation and everything
@southeastAF
@southeastAF Жыл бұрын
@@xplicitgoofy1015 he is complaining because he is going from 2,000,000 to 1.5 million. He’s still making racks- the academic surgeons are not making nearly as much as him. I guarantee this. I worked for 4 years as a PA in spine.
@xplicitgoofy1015
@xplicitgoofy1015 Жыл бұрын
@@southeastAF lol he isn’t making 1.5M even, he is barely making 200k per year that’s private practice for you. Also why is working at a hospital considered “academic practice” when you aren’t in an academic position? I know of a spike surgeon who is head of spine surgeon at this prestigious hospital who has a T20 medical school and he is making a 5 million dollar salary. All I’m saying is not all positions at a hospital are considered academia and they very much could have the potential to make a lot. Sure he is the head surgeon of his department but still I’d assume Spine surgeons are making a lot at hospitals like that.
