Here in the US I had a 2006 Chaparral 276 with an 8.1L big block single engine and a duo prop Volvo drive. I paid $33k for the boat with 425hrs on it. With payment, slip fee, fuel, repairs, and winterization and winter land storage fees I was around a total cost of around $8k-$9k per year all in to own and run that boat. I put around 50hrs on it every summer. Mostly just driving up to a sand bar and having a party. So you're doing pretty well if your ownership costs are around 10%. I was around 30% percent but I was also financing too. Nobody has that kind of cash around me to buy boats in cash. Almost everyone has a loan.

10% is for a new boat not an older boat which requires less maintenance due to it being new and under warranty

Swede here! Your mooring cost is astronomical.
@joannemilburn64296 ай бұрын
We have a 31 foot sailing yacht on Windermere. to moor our boat on a jetty there was £6000 per year (2 years ago so its more expensive now). We have it on a swinging mooring which costs round about £1390! The facilities (toilets and showers are disgusting)! To put your boat on the hard during the sailing season is limited to 4 days and that costs £400. you are not guaranteed a hard standing out of season because its based on who had their boat out last year (they get the first choice and after that its first come first serve)! So Poole mariner looks pretty good!

The 10% cost is all dependent on the initial purchase price. If we’re talking normal yearly running costs, the same costs apply to a new boat as they do for a 20 year old boat of the same size. So the equivalent sized boat here would be upwards of £200k. With exception of higher insurance, all over costs are the same and wouldn’t come in at 10%. With a used boat of £50k for example, that’s where the 10% costs come from. Sometimes…….

I'm not knocking it as I'm sure you are happy there but Cobbs is very expensive. They wanted £3650 for a berth for my 24ft boat at the time I was paying £950 for a similar pontoon berth on the river Hamble with all the same facilities and in a yard owned by MDL too. Yes I know it's a different place and a different location but I feel the prices should be similar as they are offering the same service from the same company. I now keep my boat at the bottom of my garden for free, which saves lots and pays for two seasons fuel....
@ALifeMoreBoaty11 ай бұрын
I think marina prices have rocketed up in the last few years due to many more boaters. And that leads to supply and demand ratio driving prices up.
@fat_tommo_goes_boating11 ай бұрын
@@ALifeMoreBoaty the Hamble mooring I had is now £1050 for the year, so it's gone up £100. But as you say supply and demand, there are a lot less marinas in Poole.

Great film. However antifoul I got the hull on a sealine s29 most certainly cannot cost £100. Plus rollers etc. my boat is 8.3m I use x 2 sea jet antifoul tins plus spotting of underwater primer here and there. Antifoul for the stern drive. A recalculation might be on the books.
@ALifeMoreBoaty2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, fair point and it's all personal choice. I use one tin of Hemple and the guy who services my out drive anti fouls it as part of the service. These prices are just mine, to give people and very basic idea. Thanks for watching.

Great vid but I thought the 10% rule included average fuel costs as well?
@ALifeMoreBoaty13 күн бұрын
Hi good question. I would say that fuel is on top of that equation as fuel use would range wildly between users as some will cover 1,000 of miles a year and others will just potter around the harbour.

Boats seem like nothing more than hyper consumerism. It's on'e thing to get a powerboat if you like to waterski or go tubing. If not, I just don't see spending all the money to maybe go out on the water a couple times a year. I haven't seen anything convince me otherwise. I had a canoe at one time and had more fun on that than I did on any powerboat. I just don't think more money spent equals more fun in return.

A boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money. I can rent a decent small flat in the south of England for Less.
