Yes, eggs were so expensive in the winter and spring I stopped eating them but much better now. In general though I find eating healthy is not unaffordable when I consider the junk that I don't eat as well as the long term health benefits. @@firebird189Eggs at Trader Joe’s are much less expensive than anywhere else. Even when the price was outrageously high, they were under $5.00 for jumbo. Everywhere else it was over $6.00. Their normal price for jumbo eggs right now is $1.99 per dozen.

As a Christian, I found when I went into Kosher for Lent. I found it surprising because the food I was normally buying was Kosher. In my state the Kosher eggs came from a local farm and I found them more delicious. I stayed in a Kosher diet since my doctor was pleased with my improving health.❤ God bless you and your family 🙏

I’m a Christian in the Southern US who grew up farming. We’ve always cooked at home. I was pleasantly surprised more at the fact that the Canadian prices were comparable to prices in the US. If you do the math your grocery costs equal around $10/meal (US $). And your home-cooked meals are so much healthier than processed meals plus you can control the ingredients. This was a fascinating video! ❤

Your family eats very little processed foods compared the average American Walmart shopper. Most processed foods are far more expensive and far less healthy for us. I appreciate you showing that keeping Kosher does not have to be a more expensive choice. At 14: I assume your costs for Kosher meals would be about average to what it costs for feeding a family of five. Definite advantage is less processed food. I would think the costs at a Kosher grocery might be slightly higher, because it is a smaller business. But not having to search for acceptable foods would most likely be worth it. This was a really interesting video. I always figured kosher food was more expensive just because of the extra steps it needed to make sure it was, I guess, processed properly. It's nice to know for families who aren't as well off that it isn't breaking the break for them to be able to continue to eat kosher and practice their faith.

I think in France, kosher food is really more expensive than regular food, I do not have a kosher food store in my city, we are too small, or even saw a kosher logo in my 38 yo life, but I've made my homework and on some website, Rabbis are saying that it is around 10% more expensive than regular food in France.

In Germany, celery roots are commonly used for soups and often sold together with carrots and leek as a "soup kit". I was really excited to see Kohlrabi in your grocery store 😂 Did you know you can eat it raw as a snack? If not, I suggest you try it, maybe with some hummus or other dip. It's crunchy and just really different and I quite like the taste! ❤

Celery root, (we know it as Celeriac here in the UK) is very versatile. I see recipes for soups, added to roasted vegetables, and when I can get it, I also loved adding it with potatoes for mashing, or as part of Corned Beef Hash. I find that if I add things like Celeriac, Sweet Potato, Carrots etc in with mashed potatoes, it's an easy way to get more vegetables in a meal.

I am Romanian, we use celery root frequently in our soups instead of using regular celery stalks. It imparts a stronger celery flavor. I’m surprised, I was expecting it to be more expensive to eat Kosher, but you are a very savvy homemaker/ shopper . Thank you for taking us along and showing us how you do it!

Sara, I love shopping! Even as I am now waiting for a kidney transplant! I AM THANKFUL as my NEUROBLASTOMA surgery was successful and I'm now in remission! So much to be thankful for! I still struggle with being able to taste much (it's improving steadily), one thing I LOVE is poached salmon! I am Jewish and keep KOSHER, but with the cost of health care in the states, I must choose often between my many RX'S and food...so no salmon for now! I often explain to people that keeping a kosher diet is SOOOO much healthier, many times they thought it was only a religious thing! When they learn the facts it opens up avenues of beautiful conversation and even friendship! Of course, my few chats with others do not hold a candle to all you do! Kosher meat is double and sometimes triple of non kosher. In my area, we have to order a lot of stuff in. 50-60.00 for a roast is the norm. Living in an area, that has a kosher grocery, would be nice. Meat is a little cheaper, if you have a full kosher grocery. If you live in a place that has hardly nothing, you have to ship it in. We get together and have a kosher butcher deliver to us, from Baltimore.

I would expect kosher to cost more largely because you don't have quite as much freedom to switch to what's on sale or whatever. That said, having two working parents adds a lot to the food budget to begin with, so there's no direct comparison anyhow. And some of the ways in which having less time makes cooking more expensive (specifically not having a lot of time and energy to experiment with new brands, or in needing to buy more pre-packaged foods anyhow) may also make the price difference with buying kosher food less extreme.

Dr. Sara, I absolutely LOVE your videos and wait for them. I’m a Christian, but I love shopping Kosher whenever possible. The produce is fresher, and the meats have no antibiotics or steroids. I find a small difference in price here in Louisiana, with Kosher being a few cents more, but definitely affordable. May you and your family stay blessed. Prayers for you and the world as well. I use paper towels laid in the sink and bathtub, then spray or pour vinegar in which I often infuse with citrus slices. It smells nice and the acid cleans very well. My shower curtain is machine washable, so it goes in the washing machine. I love your idea of layering table clothes! I hope it is OK that I start doing that, too! I'll think of you when I do! I did this with my kid's beds when they were little. I had pads that were rubber coated with flannel. I would have then make their beds, then the pad would go on top, then their light sleeping bags would go on top with a pillow. Sometimes we'd use those bed tents, too, just for fun, but it kept the children warmer in the winter time, teaching them a lesson about insulation for camping or emergencies. I don't like using chemicals in my home, as many can make us sick. Bleached eggs, for instance, some dogs will not even eat. When you eat home grown eggs, then try to eat a bleached store bought egg, they smell like bleach, and are really pretty gross. There's nothing quite as good as fresh eggs from healthy backyard chickens! Yum! You might not have eggs in your area because of the bird flu, and some areas had to destroy their flocks. My guess is that you're in an area that was affected. Yes! We hope our children will always be very close, and we all need family and friends. Kosher food is generally amazing. I love Kedar grape juice. I wasn't aware that there was coleslaw where it was washed and checked for bugs. I'll have to look for that. I don’t know that anything from the garden is 100% bug-free, but to have another set of eyes looking is a good thing. It seems your groceries are less across the board than they are here in California. I know for a while, eggs here were $10/dozen. I'm not surprised that kosher foods are about the same price as other foods. I do wonder about how eggs are washed in bleach here, andifthat's kosher? I need to learn the kosher laws. I'm aware that some things, such as fish & meat & milk need to be separate, but other than that, I'm not aware. I will have to check out the laws. They seem to be healthier. Perhaps G-d is trying to tell us something??? Have a great day!

I didn't realize how much I needed to hear that today 💛 I found your shopping impressively affordable for a North American family of five. As a vegan, I save money by not buying meat--but I also like to indulge in processed foods, so the spending balances out 😅 I once accompanied my Orthodox Ashkenazi friend on her weekly grocery shop at Aldi, a very affordable grocery chain (is it only in the US?). I was surprised to see how many kosher products she found--and I'd forgotten that she could find plenty of produce at ANY store! Like you (and most kosher eaters, apparently), she cooks a lot of homemade meals. She opened my eyes to the possibilities of eating kosher on a budget. I enjoyed watching the items YOU shop for as an Orthodox Sephardic family. Those seven different salads sound so yummy!

I, too, love a close knit family. My mother is the last surviving sibling of her 13 member immediate family. At 87, she misses her 5 sisters most of all. Unfortunately, two of my sisters are estranged, and I pray that they will one day reunite. I also pray that your daughters will always be best friends. Nothing more precious.

Close ties in a family are so important!!! My sister is my best friend - even now when we are both in our 40s. I homeschool my kiddos and it has created strong bonds (despite occasional friction - ok maybe more than occasional). The eldest (twins age 15) still enjoy spending time with their 7 year old brother. I’m so grateful!!!

I love shopping (and I still love bug-free food too)! I must confess I had no clue as to whether kosher food would be more expensive or not, but it makes sense it is if you are buying fresh and doing the preparation yourself rather than lots of pre-processed foods. I must confess I was suspecting it might take longer based on my own experience, but perhaps this is something that gets faster and easier over time. Unrelated to this video, based on one of your other recent uploads, I've recently purchased a two-handled cup which I keep by my kitchen sink and have been ritualistically washing my hands and saying the blessing both first thing in the morning and at other appropriate times (I'm being polite for KZbin, but I am sure everyone can guess what I mean). We've got some restructuring on the horizon at work, and I've been really surprised how something as simple as netilat yadaim has helped me feel more stable through this uncertainty.

You are correct about how quickly you will learn prep of fresh produce. Cooking is easy. Steaming or roasting are very easy. I do not like processed foods anymore.

I think it comes down to meal planning more than anything. You do a lot more planning to keep kosher, and in the end that probably SAVES money - we eat takeout far too much or run out to buy ingredients that we forgot. Buying it all at once and not impulse buying (you're right - GREAT LIFE SKILL!) saves money in the end.

To ripen avocado faster you can place it in a paper bag with an apple. Fold the edge over and leave overnight. It is amazing how well it works.

I thought you did amazingly well monetarily. I imagine it's lower than most because you don't eat a lot of prosessed and name brand foods. Hello Friends in the Frumitup universe. Being an Irish-Puertorican Catholic kid from the NYC suburbs (i.e. NJ), I had friends from many different cultural backgroungs, including many Jewish acquaintances and friends. My parents (born 1920) were very close to one Orthodox Jewish Family in Particular who we would see several times a year, and always on xmas (the mother loved to decorate the tree and when we were lucky enough to coincide with Hanukah we would also light the Menorah) Being an amateur mathmatician and an avid amateur cook this video was right up my alley. I often would prepare food (first for the aforementioned xmas guests) and later for various jewish friends over the decades. I had to take a crash course in Kosher cooking to accomadate my Orthodox guests. I recall one dinner where I got disposable ovenware and new plates etc (I was in the middle of amassing dinner dishes so that was already in progress). I even a learned a new kosher tip I never knew of avoiding insect infestation. I retired to Mexico 37 years ago and when in the capital there were Jewish folks there but after a year we moved to Oaxaca in the south and the there only a random tourist or so and a few residents. I know Kosher Food has an 'expensive' reputation but, personally, I never found shopping for kosher meals terribly expensive. I was only mildly surprised that it turned out cheaper (of course it's obvious you have an eye for bargains when shopping, a trait we both share) Thank you for this marvellous trip down memory lane. The last day of June and the 1st 2 days in July are very big days for my little family, involving our anniversary, our "houseversary" (when we signed on our home), and our cat's birthday. (She's 2 today! She nearly didn't survive - and wouldn't have if, at 2 WEEKS OLD, she hadn't managed to get partner's attention, crying and starving and soooo sick with a severe URI... the vet was VERY surprised and happy she pulled through... thus her name, Caden - little fighter. Lol). So, lots of celebrating and lots to celebrate! For those adding to prayer lists, I'd like to keep Ernest on it - he lost his father to the big C and exactly 31 days later, he lost his mom as well (official cause was a clot thrown to her heart, but Ernest swears its was because her heart was broken). He's very... lost right now and struggling. He's drowning in sorrow. While we are doing what we can to be there and help him through this pain, I know he would appreciate a bit of extra love and support from you all through the Almighty. Great grocery haul! You really are good at keeping within budget! We keep a 1/4 acre vegetable garden, and also raise chickens (exclusively for eggs). I am with you when it comes to “buggy broccoli” - I’ve given up growing it because it’s a bug magnet. I do grow several leaf vegetables (lettuces, spinach, chard) and I end up always soaking the leaves for ten minutes in a sink of cold water because the bugs feed and dwell on such are nearly invisible- I do such with purchased leafy greens during the winter for the same reason.

I was not surprised. Our family is gluten free and Kosher because we are Jewish and I have Celiac’s. I think it is very important to be close nit. Unfortunately it is just my spouse and I and two pups and our friends in the small Jewish community here. That total is about what we spend a week most of the time every two weeks for our family of two with two pups. “I Love Shopping”. My husband's grandparents came from Syria. They settled in Argentina, but my husband's parents then moved to Israel which is where I met him. We live in NYC now where there is a large Jewish Syrian community. It is nice to know that regular Syrian people (not government) liked and miss us there. Thank you for telling us.

I'll agree about the chickpeas, Sara. I like having tins of pulses, because they are good if I need them in a hurry. But chickpeas and beans that have been soaked first do come out better in the finished dish.

I love shopping! I have two children, ages 12 and almost 16, and they are best friends too. I can only hope they continue as they grow up. We always make homecooked meals, and always make a point of sitting down at dinner to reconnect. I know my kids will one day look back on these times with fondness. Cooking canned chick peas will vastly improve their texture! I learned this from a recipe for Pasta e Cece (pasta and chick peas). For that recipe, the beans cook with the pasta in liquid, like a stew, so about 15 minutes. Perhaps you will try this method to make canned chick peas more tasty! Have a wonderful week, Sara! I love shopping. And yes. I did think it would be more expensive. I assumed that all the checks that are needed to be able to grant a kosher label would make for more expense food. But, even if it were so, and I suspect I'm wrong about it. You'd probably balance it out considerably by buying very few processed foods. It does make a huge difference. As does having an eye to whether a price is good or not before buying.

I LOVE SHOPPING & 14! :) I am not Jewish but I love Jewish culture, and I really do think that buying kosher food specifically does not pose inherent difficulties to one's budget. This was my opinion at the beginning of the video and it still is my opinion at 14 in the video :) I loved seeing your daughters' strong bond. I have a strong bond with my older brother. He is quite a many years older than I am, but we live together and we are truly close friends. I would say from my own experience: as life and puberty potentially throw challenges at the girls, please do not feel disheartened or upset if they go through times where they want a little bit more distance from another in order to find out who they are and become their own people. They will almost certainly come back to each other even if times get hard here or there. Just keep the faith and offer love to them both, and let them get over it in their own time knowing that it's normal and ok to have disagreements with one's siblings, and one can disagree with somebody while still loving them with their whole heart. I also noticed while watching your video catalogue that you protect your daughters' privacy by not putting their full faces into videos without blurring, Purim masks, etc. etc. I am so deeply impressed by this. They are so young that I think protecting their identity and making the choice to not put their faces online is the best possible choice. You go Mom!!! And oh my gosh, what a cute outfit you are wearing. I love your necklace and your tichel! The combination of your necklace with the neckline of your dress and the contrast of the white shell is so beautiful and elegant. I also love Leah's outfit, but then, I am such a sucker for black shirts and denim... I love to wear a pair of jeans with a black t-shirt, even in the summertime. Please tell her that I think she is so cool and stylish :) And Naomi's outfit is just as beautiful -- I think that the color of her dress compliments her hair SO well! You have such a well-dressed family! I hear you on the eggs! I actually switched to vegan liquid eggs recently, half because of price. The other half is that I don’t like eggs, I just use them as ingredients, and liquid eggs can be frozen and thawed as needed. Finally, I can make waffles whenever the mood strikes me!

For baking you can make your own vegan eggs cheaply from ground flaxseed and water from recipes online. In muffins I use one heaping tablespoon of soy flour and 1 tablespoon of water in place of 1 egg. For breakfast eggs I use a tofu scramble recipe with Indian black salt (kala namak). The black salt tastes like egg. I save a ton of money by DIY as I am a cheap vegan. Lol

WOW! I am completely shocked that it isn’t more expensive to shop Kosher! I 100% thought it would be. As a family of 4 in the central United States (Which includes 2 teenage boys!) I spend about $250/week, which to me, is crazy! I try to shop as inexpensively as possible while balancing meals, veggies and protein, etc. You did a fabulous job!

Thanks for sharing this information! One bad habit my hubby and I got into through Covid is ordering out for food. We're spending SO much on fast food deliveries, and aren't healthy at all. I love to watch the videos where you are out and about with your daughters. You always have such joy, and I thank you for sharing it. I expected the total to be around three hundred U.S. dollars, so I was a little off. I love shopping, but I don’t always love the prices. At our Walmart, you can buy a dozen eggs for just under a dollar. That’s a nice change from four dollars a dozen. For awhile, I could only get organic, cage free eggs, which were seven dollars for two dozen. I really don’t understand the pricing at some stores!

I love shopping ❤ In my area of Central New York, we have IGAs, usually in villages and smaller towns (Independent Grocers Association). I also work for a large East Coast regional grocery chain. I know that you eat more legumes and vegetables than many families, plus most of the foods are "whole". The vegetables are preinspected, washed, and trimmed to make them more attractive and convenient, which does add a bit to the price. It all looks very healthy and flavorful. I've never used celery root, though we do sell it here.

I am not religious in anyway and am a Wal-Mart shopper. I only buy shelf stable foods or completely sealed at the factory foods (like milk or frozen veggies) for cold foods. The produce and meat at Wal-Mart is very poor quality for about the same price as Aldi or any other grocery store running sales. Furthermore, our local Wal-Mart continually loses the entire freezer and refrigerated meat and dairy section due to "electrical issues". It is sad because Aldi, Publix and Food Lion at the same intersection dont have these issues. I am waiting for someone to blow the whistle on Wal-Mart 's poor food quality putting people at risk of disease. Be careful with their Marketside brand prepared produce too. I bought spinach once that had mystry non-spinach leaves mixed in, something long and thin with a spicy/bitter taste and smell when tested. I had to pick through every leaf.

I very much enjoyed this and am currently trying to eat fully Kosher. My story isn't short so I won't get into it, but I no longer live in a Jewish neighborhood and plan to start buying my meat in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, I do not eat many of the healthier food that you eat like mushrooms, broccoli, beets, and so many things like that. I try to stay away from the processed stuff and used to make my own French fries, but it was something we did in moderation as it took time and the amount of oil did not seem healthy so I'd put paper towels in between them. Your girl were so helpful and seem so genuinely happy to help with shopping and that is something that can only be credited to YOU ! I wish you had bought them those toys just to put a smile on their face. After seeing the skipping and then them holding hands like that my heart melted and I wish there was a way I could magically pay for them and have them placed in the cart.

Lovely vlog! Israeli groceries are more costly for the most part than what you pay in Canada. I cook everything from scratch including croutons, salad dressings, jams. We are lucky that we have a year round growing season so all the herbs are from my garden. No egg shortages now but weird random things disappeared like buttermilk....go figure!

I am Christian...but since I've started watching your videos...when I go grocery shopping I find myself checking all the packaging to see if it's kosher or not...and I tend to buy more kosher nowadays..
