My '91 K5 with an FWC camper and LS swap drivetrain scaled out at 6,500 pounds loaded for a week in the backcountry. It's now gained a few pounds with a big block 5-speed swap, but I need to scale it again to see where it sits. The big thing I found is with the camper I got more space to safely put stuff and I typically overpack for a trip. So it's not always the truck itself but the crap you bring with you. Passengers, gear, tools, food, water, other drinks, and fuel add up quickly.

I didn't install unnecessary offroad stuff, a stock hilux with 235/85r16 is extremely capable, i never had a problem getting to any place i want to. I actually never reached the limits of the truck when traveling because i turned around and searched for alternatives, there is absolutely no benefit in tackling a hard track and risking damage thousands of miles from home in a remote Tajik mountain range where every week or so a farmer shows up.

The thing that always puts it in perspective for me is when people talk about fuel. Standard Disco has a 20 gallon tank (IIRC) and they get roughly 500 miles on a tank. When people talk about having 1000 miles of range that means they've got at least 40 gallons of fuel aboard. Now think about driving around with a full 40 gallon drum into the back of your Disco! It's SO easy to start fitting extra fuel and water tanks and not think about the weight of those liquids. Then there's the hardware that goes into an overland vehicle. You can empty all the drawers and cubbies out and you'll find, maybe, a couple of hundred pounds of stuff and you'll feel okay about it. Thing is, a single sheet of 1/2 plywood weighs 40lbs. How much plywood goes into the average overland truck? 2 sheets? 3? 4? I've got a fairly modest drawer set-up in the back of my disco but it took the best part of 3 sheets of 1/2 ply to build it, and there's 10 gallons of water stored, and a 120A battery. That's ~120lbs of drawers, 120lbs of water and 80lbs of battery before I even LOOK at the 200lbs of camping junk that sits in there as well.
@DK-sn4ms3 жыл бұрын
Ya, no way even a stock D2 with the 4.6L will hit much over 200mi to a tank.
@schmojo333 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is people are trying to make their rigs as capable as possible off-road and treating it like a push-your-limits weekend romper while trying to be an overlander at the same time and it ends up being bad for both. Overlanding isn't about pushing your vehicle on the hardest trails. Skip one ton axles, 37s, and lots of extra steel. 33s and a front locker are plenty capable for most trails. Don't skimp on the front bumper but don't go crazy, add the minimum underbody protection on the vital parts, and keep your gear to the essentials. Limit your comfort items. Gas mileage is important for an overlander as its about going long distance. 37s and one ton axles add a lot of weight and rolling resistance and will kill your gas mileage and on road performance which unfortunately a lot of miles are on road as well, and then you need to carry more fuel which adds more weight to make up for that lower gas mileage.
@johnterpack39403 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the one-tons. Even a slightly taller tire is going to put more stress on the axles. Add deeper gears to compensate for the tires and you compound the problem. Regardless how diligent you are about weight you're going to add to it significantly. So you'll have a heavy vehicle operating in rough terrain. The added weight of the one-tons is a small price to pay for the durability they bring. Generally, I do agree about tire size. But there are a lot of variables. 33s might be adequate for a compact SUV but not necessarily for a full-size 4-door pickup. If the trails in your area are heavily rutted you will probably want taller tires. We get lots of flooding here. So I plan to add taller tires for those times when the streets are underwater.
@schmojo333 жыл бұрын
This conversation is about generalities, any sane person will understand there are variables and you need to adapt or dare I say step outside the norm for your own situation and intentions. Obviously a 4door full size truck way want to consider 35s or 37s but thats not necessarily a good choice for an overlander in the first place unless you are towing or hauling a camper on the bed and then one ton axles may not be a bad choice. You just are always going to add a quite a bit of weight, thats a given. The vast bulk of overlanders in the U.S. are driving a relatively modern Tacoma, 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler, 2nd gen Xterra, etc and it would be retarded to throw one ton axles on those vehicles just to run 33s. In that very common situation, one may not even need to regear at all just to go up an inch or two in tire size. On these vehicles, you can keep them relatively stock, and only need to add maybe a couple skid plates, 33s, lockers, air compressor, a better bumper, shovel, basic camping gear and still stay under GVM and they are all set for most trails that most people are going to be on when they want to go overlanding. A winch is very much optional. The point is to pick the trails that are offroad and take you out the furthest while being the easiest for your vehicle. People are commonly confusing 4wheeling with overlanding.

I'd feel much safer in this rig, than say a 6500 lbs Tacoma overlander on stock axles. Technically over GVWR, but the extra weight capacity of the tires / axles, much stronger control arms, extra braking capacity is also significantly higher than factory. The only stock weight bearing component is the chassis itself, but LRs are known to have beefy frames. The military Jeep J8 with a Dana 60 has over double the payload of a stock wrangler; frames are often not the limit in payload / GVW.
@TeCKis3003 жыл бұрын
Now the trick is how to keep all this capability and functionality but drop 300-400lbs out of it. More durability, more performance, etc. That MDF cargo system is ripe for the picking, replacing with a light aluminum setup. Dual batts and all the associated heavy wiring and hardware can be replaced with modern lithium solar generators. The steel roof rack is also weight where you don't want it.

As someone pointed out in one of TrailRecon’s videos’ comments, exceeding the GVWR will probably not matter if you’ve built the vehicle to handle it until there is an accident and some litigious bastard comes at you with an army of lawyers.

@@KansasSlim64 LITIGIOUS!! I’m adding that one to the books! These are all very good points. The registration for vehicles here in the states is really nothing more than connecting a drivers license to a license plate, and each state has its own inspection requirements (mostly centered around emissions, and proper lighting) that gets tacked onto that. MOST of the best Offroad rigs I’ve ever seen have come from that side of the world. The US has nice ones. But they just don’t seem to match up (for the most part) to the purpose built, well rounded rigs I see in AUS. I’ve been assuming that’s because certain engineering standards are kept.

I do like to weigh my stuff. I like to know how much I’m pulling or moving across the trail

That's a little less than I was guessing. It will go even higher when you swap in the diesel. ;)

It really sounds like your going to need a supercharger 👍👍

That's 1000lbs heavier than my TD5 Discovery 2 with custom front bar, winch, rock sliders, rear bar and full touring fit out. I'm on 31s and a 2" lift. That the max I can leagaly have in Australia without an engineering certificate.

Now you have to do few vids on ways to loose weight on a rig.

Maybe I overlooked it but I would love some in depth on why you had to scrap a whole axle and buy one. Seems like such a waste!!!
