Nintendo (NES) was released in test markets during fall of 1985 (NYC/Manhattan-test market). The actual Nationwide (US) and European release did not happen untill February and September (respectively) of 1986. The reason for this, they showed off the device original form, Nintendo Advanced Video System, to a lackluster reception. They changed the marketing strategies and redesigned the box to a toy look. After the redesign, they did a test market. It took off and the rest is history. Too bad, the original design looked awesome and had wireless connectivity to the controllers, light gun, and cassette player. It was designed much like similar computers at the time, the Sinclair, Commodore, Atari 800XL/ST.
