I’ve been out and about exercising our doggos too, exhilarating early morning or cool evening walks. “Letting your dog sniff is good for their mental being.” I definitely agree. You guys are the best pawrents for Rancho! “Physical exercise and mental stimulation is important. BOTH ARE IMPORTANT.” Thank you. Loved this!!!!! Bless you and we love you Rancho and fam! 👍🏼🐕💋💕

Rancho is such a cutie😍 I like how he tries to engage his bff to play 🤣We have a 6 year old terv and she does the same with sticks as I see Rancho does here. Often she picks a stick she has lying in the garden on our way out and she will play with that stick and carry it with her for the length of the walk. Occasionally she will also put it in front of us on the trail, asking us with her body language to pick it up and play with it because this is the coolest stick ever! When we want her to focus on us ie when passing other people we use the stick as our tool to have her focus on that. For exercise we do 1-3 hours every day, mostly running, and also mental training like following commands, doing tricks etc.

I think Rancho having a long walk with you at 11am and taking him for an evening walk at 5pm is a very good idea for exercise for him, I’m impressed it also gives the opportunity for you and him to get some fresh air and bonding time in the evenings too. I like what said when Rancho wants to do something while out for a walk too such as sniffing his surroundings and play with sticks when he gets tired 30 minutes into the walk I like that said you take him for a run or a bike ride too. If I helped exercise Rancho with you, I’d provide water for him so doesn’t get to hot and he’s kept hydrated. Can’t wait for more topic you’re very good my friends.

Water is a great idea, Peter. He often drinks from puddles and streams or little ponds, but if it's a longer walk, it's a good idea to take some water with you. Thanks for watching. 😊

Thank You for sharing Rancho w us. We love to see him in action. We have 3 Terv's. My wife and/or I almost always take them to the dog park for 1 to 1&1/4 hours of running around, chasing Frisbees or playing w other dogs. Then each one gets about 20 to 30 minutes of obedience or agility @ home. In the late afternoon they go on a 40 minute sniffathon long walk. Both the female and one of the males will usually walk behind me on the way back home so that my hand can brush up against them. We had a male Terv (died age 6 of congenital cardiomyopathy) who would poke each of us w his nose when he wanted attention. If we tried to ignore him the pokes only got harder. The other male we have does what Rancho does w a stick. The two boys also usually get 15 to 30 minutes of free-play on the agility course chasing one another before bed. One is almost 1 yo and the other one is 1&1/2 yo. Our female is 6 yo. A tired Terv makes for a nice quiet evening for their mother and father.

Love the vids! Very useful! My Groenendael Koda gets about an hour play time in the garden chasing after my Collie and an hour long walk most days. He still needs some training on leash so pulls most of the way as he can't go off leash but when we play in the garden or if I am working and he wants attention he will continuously nudge me. He is fairly chilled most of the day otherwise

Hello Rancho and owners. Yes, 4 times a day does look good. I do the same with both my ladies. Two longer walks in total about 10K. Only Loki, who is now 14 months old, has more energy than Fenna who is 9 years old. So Loki goes one more time extra and then I try to challenge her a bit more with games and so. thx for the video. Was fun watching Rancho playing with his best buddy👊😉

I'm so surprised to hear that some people don't let their dog sniff around. Somehow that was a crucial part of taking the dog to a walk to me even as a kid when it was just a short potty walk. It was so counter-intuitive to start pulling the sniffing dog and just drag him around the block in a hurry. To me it was obvious that even if you meant it to be a quick walk, you'd let the dog sniff all he needed in that path. I guess I compared it to grabbing someone's phone and hanging up in the middle of their conversation in my head. This video was pretty good to know, that they're not an impossible breed, that a normal human can easily take care of their activity needs. The only thing that makes me think is that if you work for 8 hours and don't want to wake up at 5 am to do a longer walk in the morning, will they get restless being alone at home until afternoon/evening play and activity time?

New subscriber here from STL! These dogs require a lot of stimulation, attention, & play. I take my Tervuren, Dexter, on a 6-8 mile run every other day and he still has energy to play after (he’s not neutered by the way). If you like running and can’t deal with the short attention span of your Tervuren, I highly recommend having your shepherd trained. On the days we don’t run he has extensive activity outside on our property. Tervuren’s are very loving dogs. Best first choice I have ever made. 😉

My Belgian Malinois needs significant exercise. She has an agility course out back, she also chases toy hamsters and ribbon on teaser wands, chases and retrieves a Chuck it Max Glow ball repeatedly, does scent work, on and on. Also is taken on brisk walks everyday. Would say she’s out back doing some activity until she’s exhausted 6-7 times per day and then walks are additional time outdoors. Very fast recharge, very very active dog. Not for those gone all day or unwilling/unable to provide training and structure consistently. Really frustrated seeing so many end up in rescues and even some shelters. Also on random websites because their owners don’t have time for them. I’d like to see breeders diversify the gene pool better than they’re doing (for health/longevity reasons) and also be more selective on who they sell their dogs to. (Please thoroughly check pedigrees and request genetic testing, and health screens and do not support breeders who are closely linebreeding when there is absolutely no reason to do so). These are a special breed and not meant for just anyone. Yes, there are some litters that are abnormal with very low drive, but that is not the norm nor should it be.

Really appreciate the videos; they really gave a lot of insight on my belgian shepherd / tervueren We have a pretty large garden in which my collie and tervueren play in the morning and sometimes evening I do an hour / hour and a half long walk with him everyday in the evening but now I have exams so he also gets to walk in the morning; all be it pretty short: 20 mins with a step After our walk he usually asks to play a few fetches for about half an hour / 15 mins. My brother tends to help with his activity by playing fetch as well throughout the day We have a tendency of playing silly with our dogs throughout the day aswell which also contributes to his activity Last but not least he has dog training on fridays and wednesdays We hope to do agility once he is 1 y/o

I have one Flat coated retriever and a 18 month old Tervueren. Our job is to search for lost cats, dogs and other animals. To do that we all have to be in good shape. A dog search can be up to 25 km in challenging terrain.We most often search cats because they are the pets that runaway from home most often. One reason are that they very often live close to each other in villages. That causes conflicts between the cats and often ends with one attack the other. In sweden we don't really have stray dogs. Some run away but at any time we don't have more that 5 dogs that have been on the run over a month. That is 5 dogs out of 1,1 million dogs. Cats is much worse. We have around 1,6 million cats and around 200 000 of them are homeless. WE have worked 2 years with trying to help cats and dogs and other animals to get back home. My Terveuren and Flat coated retriever are trained idiots. That means they follow an animal or human buy that individuals unique scent. We present our dogs with a smeller that present that unique smell to them and tell them exactly what they should search for. They can then follow that scent for very long. It works just as fine when it comes to searching people. Personally I have searched humans but the organisation becomes very often so complex and large. Give me a sock of that missing individual and my dogs will pick up the scent and start following the scent trail. I have searched cats and dogs by this method for over 2 years. 'we have searched around 3-4 cats every week. WE succéd to get around 60% percent of the cats home again. It is because we have a number of tricks to get them home. Working together with your dogs to achieve a coming goal give us a relation to each other that makes up a team. I have now retired as a idhund all the time chasing cats. 4-5 times per week. Idhund Sweden has been a great success for many years. One your dog and you are certified you can search animals and humans. Guess you credibility also among th authorities. To work with this is the best exercise your active dog can have. They have to follow an animal for 10-25 km and all the time tell what way the cat or dog have gone. My dogs can do that. That is the best exercise they can get both physically but also mentally. I have no clue which way to go. I always have to thrust my trained dogs. They rarely makes misstakes. Idhund is a concept that has been developed during the last 10-15 years. However builds upon knowledge that goes back much longer. I will go down to Austria in August September and would find it interesting to train some dogs in Czech and Eastern Austria. Nose work come on. Here we talk about searching an animal for hours. Can your dog do that. 'With training I think it can. After a search my dogs often fall to sleep in the car driving home. After and hour two hours sleeping they are prepared to do the same thing once again.

Tess needs some action, about as much as Rancho. After a busy day, she can enjoy some rest as well, but d+2: Action ! Fortunately we focused het on a ball, so we can keep her happy running after & fetching a ball. As you state, Tervuerens keep going forever, so as the respomsible "leader" you need to know when they need to chill a bit. Relaxing with a Tervueren can be quite a challenge... but keep on doing your routine, eventually it will sink in to the dog's brain so she can relax as well. Jist keep them excited about things they love and they will remain happy dogs...
@ranchothedog3 жыл бұрын
So true, they do need structure and as long as they know their time to have fun will come, they can learn to relax pretty easily. Have a great day Frank.

Right now we have a 2yo human puppy and a 10-month-old groenendael puppy. The second one gets typically: -heavy-working walk (obedience/tugging/retrieving for like 20 minutes + around 15 minutes of misc.) at 6am; -a "dance-a-like" walk with my wifey; -at least 1 hour of a walk after 4pm. Not to mention he is a hugging toy for a little man for the rest of the time unless he is in a crate. When it comes to poking in the thigh he is too curious for an environment on long walks so I don't experience that yet. BTW I've heard an opinion not to let your belgian go off-leash on walks at age 8-15 months - what do you think about that? The main concern is that he'll likely go away.
@ranchothedog3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing 😘 I'm glad to hear that your human pup is getting along with your canine pup :) I've never heard that, but when I think back to when Rancho was around a year old, something did change and he suddenly started chasing cars (which was really scary, especially when he did it for the first time and we weren't expecting it - we though he was going to die) and wildlife, so maybe it's actually right. You should definitely be more careful when they reach that age.
