Just adopted a 4 month old female shepherd rescue dog from the SPCA. We start our day at 8am and go to bed around midnight. We train a few times a day on basics (as of now) play fetch and tug of war, her favorites, a few times a day, and chill or hug each other the rest of the time. My girl Apple has saved me as much as I have saved her. Fun is the name of the game. Being 73 she's just what I needed to enjoy life again. I'm athletic and fit, but it will be a challenge to see who wears the other out first.

I try and take Rosie my female rescue German shepherd for at least an hour walk twice a day varying our daily walks so she experiences new things. I look forward to the day she can run free off leash and come when I call her, but this is in the future. Right now I'm focusing on bonding with Rosie and some obedience so she knows what is expected of her while I wait for the covid 19 restrictions to be lifted so I can enroll her in doggie obedience classes once they resume. I loved watching Lucy run or any German shepherd for that matter, its like poetry in motion. I was suprised to learn a German Shepherd's top running speed is 40km per hour and can run 8 to 32 km in distance at speed, no wonder humans trying to outrun a German shepherd do not stand a chance. I also play fetch the ball in the backyard with Rosie as well as having a game of chasy with her too, clapping my hands as I run after her and saying to her "I'm going to get you." I know when she has had enough when she lays down and I give her a pat and say to her "tag your it" I also have a lot of toys and Tug toys . Keeping her mind stimulated is also important. Today she is learning to use her doggie door and has picked it up quite quickly.

Lucy is absolutely amazing & what a beauty! Love the videos thanks, it a great help to learn how to look after a GSD. Hey thanks heaps. Yes I think you will be fine. It all comes down to the work you put into them. We live in a small house in Sydney. We have a video on it as well. They don't need lots of room as they are very adaptable. If you train him/her everyday and give them a 1 hour walk / exercise then they will just sleep for the rest of the day.

Yes absolutely, Get a large and divide it up so she only has enough room to be comfortable but cant go to the toilet in it. Give her/him more room as they grow until they fit without the divider

I'm torn between getting a gsd or a husky. Gsd takes it on trainability but I love cycling along my local coast line and and would like a dog to join me. Obviously huskies are the Kings of medium to long distance running. My question is how would a German shepherd be, trotting alongside while I take a gentle ride of about 10/15 mile? I wouldn't want to damage hips or anything.

Hey thats a sticky one. I do know huskies are hard to train but the may be better suited for those long runs. Gsds are fit and so easy to train but I wouldn't have one run that far.

So only 90 minutes of high activity such as this will lead to you having a nice relaxed pup at home? I was expecting more. But since know you live in Australia, so you can go swimming every day normally, and that's a great way of knackering out your dog... I'm guessing when you can't go swimming you need to exercise longer? I live in the UK been researching GSDs for three years for Assistance dog, waiting until I have a house with a garden before getting one as I know that puppy stage would be brutal living in a high floor apartment. Will be my "first big dog" other than small family dogs. Very excited, I have an active lifestyle mindset but due to my PTSD and other disabilities struggle to leave the house. I'm a dog sitter and dogs have helped immensely and I love being outside with them, they calm me and it's the only way I can get out and be normal member of society. Hopefully getting a dog of my own will change that. Question, is she ever left alone when you guys go to work? I love Lucy she's amazing. I would be getting a West German showline as well as I heard they're the best suited for AD work. Thanks in advance if you answer my questions! Stay safe.

Hey sorry about your struggles and I think a West German Show-line would be suited so well for you. Hey yes Lucy is alone 8 hours a day 5 days a week as we run business as well. Lucy has full run of the house and she just sleeps all day. I am very regimented with her training and exercise so she never goes without. We are very active people and like to include her on most of our day trips and things like that. So the exposure Lucy has is amazing. These German Shepherds are amazing a so adaptable. Keep us posted on your journey. I think it would be the perfect dog for you

Germans are MOST likely to experience skeletal health problems, rather than problems like diabetes, although I believe GSDs are prone to this as well. This is due to their size and weight that can have pressure of their joints. Saying this I quite proudly say I walk my 4 month puppy for under 2 hours off leash in a forest. Not on concrete. He stops and rests when he wants or when other dogs or people are around and don’t believe in the 5 min per month rule. Let me know what everyone thinks. Also my pup is fed raw diet
