My cats rarely drink so: 1. I don't distract them when they're drinking. I don't move, I keep silent, so they take in more water. 2. I have a water bowl in every room. 3. I thrifted big, cut-crystal serving bowls for their water. The prismatic sparklyness catches their eye and reminds them to drink. Thank you! I'm going to look for your subcutaneous water video now.

the crystal bowls sound like a good idea! Ive heard cats prefer to drink from a dark bowl because they can clearly see the water level. However, fresh running water is a better idea. After getting my cat a water fountain, it became the most frequent hydrating spot for them and I really think they drink more than they used to. btw I also feed my cat with wet food (usually cans mix with water), I think it helps a lot too.

My Siamese, Puddith Anne, was on subcutaneous fluid therapy for several years. She was very very good and tolerated it beautifully. We called it time for "taking on the waters". We had a special chair and place to do the therapy. She knew what was coming when we went to the chair. It kept her going until after she was 20 years old. I still remember during those times of fluid therapy how close we were. I would speak gently to her on how this would make her feel better. Somehow she knew as well. Sub Q, is like magic to the quality of life for my cat. I prefer the the syringe method so I can just top him where ever he is at with some adjustments. He normally does not mind but if he is dehydrated he does not feel well so he avoids me, yet after few minutes he quickly starts purring and feeling better. The treats help. So I do have a schedule of every 36 - 48 hours and do have to increase on hot days. He has tight skin for a cat so the max is 120cc, so more frequently than by volume. Look forward to your next video.

Thank you so much for talking about this! I lost my own cat a while back due to some seriously suspect advice from the local vet. They wanted us to inject 6 full 100ml syringes daily to try and keep our potentially diabetic cat hydrated. His eyes started tearing up from what we suspect was excess fluid at just 1.5 syringe and we stopped there because there was no way 600ml was going to fit under a 3.6 kg cat's skin, much less daily. Never got to see him get better. They also miscalculated and sent us out with too low insulin dose and that... didn't help. So yeah, this information is super important!

@@HelpfulVancouverVetI think , there is a problem . People, who wanted to become a DOCTOR in HUMAN MEDICINE and failed, turned to becoming a vet. That was not their 1st choice , it was more a substitute. Becoming a vet 1st choice their HEART is involved. We always had wonderful vets apart only one, who was scared of cats and dogs . He was more a country vet, moved to an island HELGOLAND, were we had a few sheep and a few Scottish Highland Cattle, but mainly cats, dogs, budgies etc. We couldn't fly or go by ship to the mainland, seeing a vet, staying in a hotel for th night and sailing home next day. If there would have been a mayor treatment, we would have been off to the mainland ! There was no real trust, sorry. There must be a bond between animal and vet , which helps ME bonding with him too. Will just throw out that one of my pack 'Ringo' has advanced kidney disease and I have been giving subcutaneous 0.9 normal saline for the last 4 months (100cc once per week - as prescribed from vet). Treatment has been a life saver to this point. Have to administer solo which is a bit tricky but kitty starts feeling better almost immediately after process completed & has a lasting effect (over several days). Three pieces of advice for the process. First using a larger needle say 16 gauge (as opposed to 18 - 20 gauge, the higher the gauge #, the smaller the diameter of the needle) makes for a quicker administration. Process takes less than 5 minutes. Second make sure roller clamp is closed tightly after each administration (I've had a bag run dry when I didn't 🙄). Last would be use a permanent black marker on IV bag to mark fluid level after each administration. Can be hard to see fluid level in the IV bag without. End side note, cat milk made by Whiskas has seemed to provide an excellent supplement for poor appetite (cat loves it & has Ensure-like consistency). Has allowed my cat to put back on a bit of weight. My 2 cents & best wishes. PS - A shout out to the 'All Cat Clinic' in Englewood, C.O. (just south of Denver) where my cats go to the vet (top notch rating are well deserved!) & note can order 1000cc saline bags from Walmart (though vet info. needed when ordering).

You should talk to your cat about using a fluid like LRS or normosol as 0.9% NaCl has not been routinely used in IV fluid therapy in over a decade (by people who stay up to date). The treatment frequency is also rather low, but may be appropriate for mild kidney dysfunction.

He drinks alot and I add some water to his canned food, but he also likes some dry food. He's very bony so needs calories. It got to where she hid, refused to interact with the family and became miserable, trying to avoid them. We had a difficult discussion with our vet, and it was decided to continue the interventions she'd allow, and discontinue the SubQ. Within 2 weeks her sass was back. Heck, when her kidneys completely stopped and she was falling over, the veterinarian who had come to do the in-home euthanasia petted her tail (a crime!) she got off the chair and tried to sass off. Hi! Doc! My cat, 15, suddenly became lifeless. Her vet said severe kidney values and to get to hospital asap. Hospital said $6,000 up front. I'm tapped out by $800 vet bill just to diagnose. I had to try the impossible at home. No one could tell me how much. The vet said 3x a day at 100. Others said that's too much. You could over-hydrate--then what? Right? So this is day two on antibiotics and anti-nausea meds and an appetite stimulant in ear. Anyway the cat hasn't eaten in like three days. I was going to euthanize my best friend this morning but right before I was going to grab her for her final journey she walked out into living room and gave me the look like she was hungry. I gave her some food and she ate it. So I put the idea of putting her down on hold. I gave her 100 Sub-Q this morning and she didn't get the hump normally seen after doing sub-Q. I'm wondering if she was so dehydrated there was no hump. Now I want to give her more. I plan to give her another 100 later today but is that enough. Should I try to do three like the vet said before telling me it could overhydrate her. How can I judge if I have given her enough or too much? She hasn't pooped because she hasn't eaten. I should be getting phoso bind delivered today but don't know if she'll eat it. My cat does not have heart problems.

My 15 year old cat stopped drinking water when she had a nasal polyp that made it difficult to drink without water flowing into her nose around the polyp. So I started giving her fluids subcutaneously. She's had the polyp surgically removed, but is still afraid of the water bowl. She's a tiny girl, so I give her around 100 ml a day, more if she seems a little dehydrated. Thankfully, just today, she drank from a cup, but not nearly enough. I think I'll probably be giving her fluids for the rest of her life.

Hope people won't mind a 2nd comment. Dr. Uri's KZbin advice is so helpful, and his advice actually helped give the cat who adopted me on Christmas Eve and extra year of happy life. My question, Dr. Uri, is that although injecting fluids into a cat appears to be quite common in continental America (Canada & the USA) it's something I've never heard of being supported by vets in England 🇬🇧. Vets here seem reticent about owners giving injections to cats. Any thoughts/advice on this? I'm thinking it might be difficult for people to obtain the equipment (especially hypodermic needles) needed to inject the fluids. Our regulations are so tight about hypodermic syringes and needles, as they government and medical professionals think anyone buying these things is a drug addicted junkie. (I use hypodermic needles in my work, and it's extremely difficult to buy needles that aren't blunted in England.) Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks, Rick

Now it is so easy with fluid bag, butterfly needle and plastic vials. Onky takes about 10 mins. Remember to warm the vials/ syringes before hand. I put them on the ch boiler for a while. Also needles can be bought on line and fluid but the fluid needs vet prescription. Things have improved a lot.

My 20-year-old cat has a strong preference for dry food since that's all her previous owner gave her. Luckily, she's always drunk water regularly and I've managed to transition her to half wet food most days, although there are times when she refuses to eat it. Then I have to try different brands until I find one she will eat. I've been careful to vary the food that my 3-year-old cats eat so that they don't get stuck on one type or texture of food. However, they don't drink enough water, even with various types of water fountains and dishes. They don't have any illnesses and pass the first 2 tests you mentioned but their stool is a little hard. I'm wondering if adding water to their wet food would soften their stool a bit and/or provide other benefits. If so, how much water should I add? I weigh their food to ensure that they get the right amount of calories, so I'd add water after I measure so that they continue to get enough calories.

We had a cat with very similar tastes, and we would just try a little bit of extra water in their food at a time, while slightly reducing the dry food and see how they get on. The important thing is to make sure you don't put them off wet food if that's their principle source of fluid.

My little old lady is about 18. Not sure exactly, because she arrived out of the woods with five other cats one June day. She’s had mysterious ailments since November, 2020. Some is due to thyroid, some to kidney problems, but she’s also deaf and has balance issues. She also has digestive problems which show up as diarrhea that seems to follow if her electrolytes get low. The sub-q fluids seem to help firm her up and get on a more even keel. In fact, I have to harpoon her now to maintain her schedule. She hates it, so we’re doing well if I get 150 ml in her. But she keeps on rolling along for now.

My cat weighs 3kg, so her fluids should be around 150ml based on your advice. How many days a week do you recommend administering the fluids at this amount? What is the name of the video that you mentioned in this video about the improved method for administering fluids that your client came up with? I could not find it in your videos. Thank-you for this video!

Very helpful. My cat only weighs 4kg, I think her fluid deficit is only 60ml? I rarely get that much in before her needle falls out from her squirming in discomfort though. :/

Question: Is it okay to give my cat fluid karate motion kicking power in a cat dojo setting?
@peterclarke72402 жыл бұрын
I would probably advocate caution when it comes to teaching your cat karate. Cats are much more naturally adept at ju-kit-su.

My roommate's cat needed SCF once a week and he HATED it so much! He wouldn't cooperate with my roommate so she often had to take him into the vet to have it done. Unfortunately he passed away about two months ago, likely due to a bowel issue which now that you mention the dehydration/constipation thing, might be related.

I love these videos and they are extremely helpful. our kitty has kidney disease and we just started giving her sub fluids. she does not like it at all. it's not so much the needle poke; she doesn't like to be held down and fights us. oy! but we persevere and it seems to be helping. i don't think she's put on any weight (bummer) but also not losing weight (yea!). i'm not getting notifications for these videos. can anyone explain why? thank you!!!

In humans, the army uses urine colour as a key indicator of how dehydrated someone has become. I the case of cats, our use of cat litter makes this difficult, because the litter almost instantly absorbs the cat's urine. However, Dr. Uri, I've just seen a product called the Katkor Non-Absorbent Litter Urine Collection/Sampling Kit, which contains non-absorbant litter beads. I'm wondering if there are other non-absorbent litters that we might use, so that tipping the litter tray would allow us to visually inspect the colour of the cat's urine? Thanks, Rick
@HelpfulVancouverVet2 жыл бұрын
There are, but I would advise strongly against visually inspecting your cat's urine on a regular basis. Its unhealthy. Psychologically. Of course we should keep an eye out for things like blood or frequent, non-productive trips to the litter box, but Urine color renders no useful information to the average cat owner.

I have been giving my renal cat fluids for six years now based on his capillary refill on his gums, skin turgor, and stools and he’s doing amazingly. Do you have any tips on how to keep your nerves down while injecting? My cat will only allow me to use one of his sides. It is getting harder to navigate a lot of scarring after years of fluid therapy, and he is getting more prone to bleeding (though he doesn’t have high bp).

Couldn't you just give the dogs some kind of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) in their water to replace fluids?

So my cat's favorite food just doubled in price. Can I just raise feeder mice or fish to live feed my boy? Is it okay to feed them like that?

Is there a go-to way to measure how much to feed an adult cat? Like based on weight?
@HelpfulVancouverVet2 жыл бұрын
Not really, since cats vary so much. You should ask your vet to body condition score your cat, and once itis perfect, then you can use a scale at home to keep them at that weight.
