Eighteen months ago we headed to Aldi with a crisp $20 dollar bill to buy food to feed our family entrees for an entire week. What will that same food cost now? In this video, we return to Aldi and buy the same items we purchased a year and a half ago. We show the haul and tell you how much prices have really gone up.

lol, love the collaboration with you and Daniel! 😂The bets, the war of the beans and Daniel’s great stage presence made this video so much fun. Not so fun is the reality of a 15% price increase in food at what is considered a bargain food store. Thanks as always, Under the Median!

I live in Germany. We have Aldi and Lidl. I like Lidl more but I also try to check the discount in other markets too. (since watching your videos for the last couple of months) Our food budget decreased from 700€ to 500€ for the last two months for 4 people. I might not spend the whole money this month so I plan to reduce even more for the next month. The pantry grocery helped me a lot. Your method to divide the food budget into 5 was eye opening for me. Since then I am gradually building up my pantry while I spend even less than before. So thank you❤

My daughter and I play this “guess the amount” every time we go to aldi. I am working to teach her how to budget and appreciate the meals that we make at home. So happy to see other families playing the same “aldi games”. Another fun idea: can you load the belt before the cashier is finished (I.e can you beat them?). Good luck!!

We have Aldi, Lidl, Save-a-lots and Walmart all within 1 mile of each other in my local town. I really like & prefer Aldi of the 4. The prices have gone up slightly on most items I buy, but I find the quality is still there. Although 15% increase may not sound like much, that increase in 18 months is kind of a lot. I planted a garden today hoping to offset my grocery costs for this summer and fall.

I remember the cheap tomato paste Hope!!! $.24 was the price, maybe in 2020? It doubled to $.57 at least 2 years ago here. $.81 is ridiculous imho. That's a 300%+ increase. There is NO way to justify that. Tomato paste, lentils and sardines are what I buy to donate to the food pantry.

I think that the items that really went up in price are cocoa, coffee and meat. I think that meat has gone up 600% in the last 8 years. You are lucky to be vegetarian. I am making our meat portions smaller and adding more beans to our menu. It won't be long and we will be harvesting a bit from the garden, which is always nice.

I was curious to see what your haul would cost where I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I took your list and plunked it into the No Frills grocery store app to see the total. I went with the lowest price items available with the majority being store brand. Bread $1.97, Avocado - $1.99, Sliced mushrooms $1.29, 2 cans of tomato paste $2 ($1 each), 2 cans diced tomatoes $3.58 ($1.79 each), 2 cans of black beans $2.98 ($1.49 each), kidney beans $1.49, Garbanzo beans $1.49, green beans $1.29, 3 cans of corn $3.87 ($1.29 each), 1 box of chocolate pudding mix $1.39, Rotini pasta $2.00, Farfalle pasta $2.49, taco shells $3.99, Refried beans $3.00, Taco Seasoning $1.49, Mexican style rice $3.00. For a grand total of $40.80. Even with the exchange rate, it's still almost $10 above US pricing. No wonder I only shop sales 😂

It's because of inflation, I started several years ago to purchase a flat of certain foods at a time. I haven't done the math, but I think that it gave me a cushion for future inflation, but it's great to know that if you want mushrooms in your spaghetti sauce tonight, you have more cans of mushrooms for chicken and mushrooms over rice next week.

Another great video! Your video is an eye opener for me, because I don't buy any of the items listed in your video from Aldi. I make a spelt and golden flax seed bread, I can my own tomatoes, beans are from dry or green beans are frozen beans from the garden, rice I buy bulk from the Amish and I buy mushrooms fresh. I try to can most of my food to stay away from tin cans because they are lined with BPA plastics. Aldi grass fed organic butter went up to $6 a lb but the price is now down to $5.50 on sale. I will not buy for now and I will see if the bulk food store gets it in again for $3.50 for Organic Valley Butter. I buy seafood at Aldi and prices have gone up a little. I have been buying fresh caught USA gulf coast shrimp 12 oz bag for $7. A bag is good for 3-4 servings. Aldi had ham from Easter on sale 99 cents a lb and cooked two of them up and placed them in the freezer. Aldi boneless skinless chicken breasts sell for $2.49 and it has stayed at that price for a year. The meat sale at another store sold it for $2 lb if you buy 10 lb bags. I think I bought enough for a year. I try to buy what is on sale or stock up on the high quality/hard to get foods like shrimp.

I think many stores are adjusting their sales by offsetting some of the basic things like bread , milk, eggs, sugar, coffee etc. because people buy them no matter the price . That way the store can bring in some seasonal products like live plants and housewares and small electrics which bring in a higher per item margin.

We haven't been to Aldi's in a few years. Before Easter, we checked out the flier that came in the mail to see how their prices compared to our local supermarket's. Hams at Aldi's cost about 50 cents more than at our store, and the rest of the flier's prices were only a few pennies less than the supermarket's. We decided it didn't make sense to drive a half hour away just to save what the gas to get there would cost. To save $$$ we eat almost no beef and pork, and we never buy convenience foods.

The thickeners are in the mix - probably cornstarch would be my guess. So, pudding will thicken. But, coconut milk has a lot higher fat content than almond milk. So, it makes it thicker and creamier. You can use cashew milk, too. We've used almond milk, but it's not as thick.
