I think what happened with Château de Dampierre unfortunately happens with many old estates - the descendants die off or eventually run out of money to properly upkeep it, so it falls into disrepair and even ruin and the lands and buildings are sold off. If they're lucky, a man like you buys them! Someone who is committed to seeing the property restored to its former historical glory. Thank goodness this place wasn't left to ruin, or worse, demolished. Thanks for the financial overview, Antoni!

Thank you for being so transparent about the upfront cost. The acquiring costs are a one-time cost, as well as big renovations (at least for a couple of generations). I am more interested in the yearly running costs. You talked briefly about the people working around the chateau but there is also heating, electricity, maintenance work and many more hidden costs. Do you budget these? If so, how much do you budget on a yearly basis. Thanks again for being so open, really helps to map out a future project for myself !
@DrMJJr Жыл бұрын
I’d estimate for the size of the chateau’s curtilage, and regular landscaping about $50k, but maintenance depends on the final renovation’s condition and ongoing consumption costs (assuming that it’s primarily heated/cooled via electrical utilities) at least another $15k (possibly much more).
@newblor9 ай бұрын
@@DrMJJr Yeah, there's a reason no one wants to buy these homes - they are a money pit. It's why they have to be sold in the first place, and for so little (my 1 bed apartment in London is worth almost as much as his buying price). You will never be able to resell it for what you put into it. So preservation and conversion into a historic monument is probably the only option, with a guest housing if the location is desirable. Watching people supposedly with relatively little cash buy these properties leaves me with mixed feelings.

Wow - I'm staggered. We've just spent roughly the equivalent of €1M (about AUD$1.5M) renovating our home in Sydney when we could have moved to France and lived it up in a chateau with 40 rooms! Seriously - thank you for breaking the taboo and sharing this with us. I would never have imagined such a low entry price, at least compared to Sydney prices. It is insane how many Castles actually exist in France. Standing castles with private residencies and historic ruins make up about 45.000 in total which is the most amount in the World. Absolutely insane! No wonder France is such a prominent country when it comes to them and inspired so many authors and directors. Countless of books and movies took inspiration even Disney. I was there myself and couldn't believe how stunning so many of them looked and how good the condition of a lot of them is. What's more is the amount of details they put into them like their vast gardens, furniture and so much more. So much beauty and elegance. I really like how the french like you buy them and renovate them but also want to preserve their history. Architecture like this would otherwise slowly vanish and be forgotten. You gained knowledge before buying this chateau and this is clearly visible in all of your videos so I'm glad someone like you acquired it. Many unfortunately just buy and don't respect the history behind it and just change everything. You are an amazing person and I only ever wish you the very best in your new beautiful chateau Antoni 😊❤

It is not just like in France it is like all across in Europe. All of them are under protection so you can’t just change everything on these buildings. The ownership is comes with an obligation towards the government to restore the building and it’s surroundings.The sale prices may feels low but the renovation costs are enormous not to mention the maintance costs and the utility bills. Here in Hungary we have countless castles and mansions like this. I actually live like 150 meter away from one. I saw it neglecting through decades because nobody has wanted it, then finally someone came and saved it. It’s got restored and repurposed as an event facility. Weddings, classical concerts and other cultural activities happening now in there. Just a few examples what you can find here or on google. Festetics palace, castle of Tura, Esterházy castle of Fertõd and so on. Take a look at these buildings if you have time. I promise it’s worth it.

I'm glad you're taking good care of it. It's still sad to see that the heirs to such places would sell such a thing though.

Bon courage! I love your transparency - I find the whole process fascinating! It’s wonderful that you are willing to take on such a project!

Your explanation of "How you bought a Chateau" was very straightforward and appreciate this honesty and willingness to help anyone with questions. This video would be of help for anyone who maybe would like trying to do this, if they feel they may have some back up money and alps the ability to get the work done. Feel that this all came together as it has because it was meant to take place! This was a big step for you and family, am sure. Not easy to step forward and take on larger responsibilities. You are young and am sure you will do it and as you do not mind doing some work I think it will be just fine. Little by little, this will be a very stunning, home. Chateau. Thans you for the video and look forward to more as you are able to show and have certain time plans of what you can show, and when, if really cannot make you "live" on the video , at least they can catch up in this way!

Congratulations on your beautiful Chateau! It's truly a gem, and it looks like it has found its perfect owners in you. We can relate to your story here in Tuscany, Italy. We recently acquired an abandoned seaside villa, which had sat untouched since the 1960s. It's quite an intriguing case. Despite being on the market for well over a decade, no one took the plunge due to its cluttered state and lack of care. Fortunately, we took the leap and purchased it last November. Since March, we've been hard at work with renovations, documenting the entire process along with our travels throughout Europe. It's turning into our own little treasure along the stunning Livorno coast of Tuscany. If you're interested, feel free to check out our channel to follow our renovation journey and European adventures!

Do you have a video where you break down the costs of your renovations and purchase? I'm curious about this. Also, are you Italian, or did you move there to start doing this? Thanks!

Quelle merveilleuse aventure !

Thank you for sharing this with us! Yes! We want to know. It is such a different world from Dallas, Texas US world that I live in. We live in an average 3500 sq Ft home and our home is appraised at not much less than you paid for ALLLLLL of that beauty!

HAHAHA ... I hope you learned for all future auctions Antoni ... NEVER put your hand up first. If the Auctioneer asks "Anyone" and then nobody answers he will usually lower the price and then you can bid. It is always a good idea to go to a few auctions to see how they work ! This is a beautiful Chateau and I would not have thought you would have got it for that price, especially as you got the Chateau, the fantastic Chatelet and then the other buildings. I don't know how much land you got with it ... have you bought a KZbin Drone yet (everybody buys a drone). This is a fantasic video to give people an Idea so they can see what a Chateau can cost ! But naturally this is a project for the next 10 years I would say. It will be a wonderful journey following you and your renovation !!!

The purchase price was very reasonable. But the renovation and maintenance is the essence of this type of real estate. The wonderful castle is subject to compliance with the protection of historical monuments. And will always rely on a good income.

I laughed when you said nobody except you bid on the Chateau. You are a lucky Man. I love all the different aspects of your Chateau. The Chatelet and the main House are so different and that gives you a lot of variety to enjoy. I love the Kitchen. the floor the tile on the walls which looks like it goes through to an adjacent room, and the vaulted ceiling. The floor in the entryway is beautiful, that will look incredible when it is cleaned and polished, it looks like the lite colored stone is a slightly pink quarts or something like that, maybe alabaster. I am happy for you, and I look forward to more of your videos. Jeff❤

Sometimes it's also spite, horrible !
