KDP, or Kindle Direct Publishing, through Amazon is sometimes pushed as a get rich quick form of passive income. However many will (or have) find that creating an income with low content books is not as easy as you have been led to believe on some parts of KZbin. This video is a very honest look at how much money I earned at the beginning of my KDP journey to hopefully give you a more realistic over view.

Same here. I've published 44 books so far on KDP in the last year. 6 books were low content and the rest were full blown theoretical manuals on physics and astrophysics. In 10 months I've made a total of about $90.00 USD. I'm working on customized coloring books, crossword puzzles and word search books ATM. I'm a retired professional 3D designer, architect/structural engineer. I love to design and create content. I have to do something to pass the time. Today I made a custom coloring book for each of my 5 grandkids. They are going to love them.

Self publishing is effective if you're willing to market yourself and do social media. If you rather not put yourself out there, let others do the work, consider traditional publishing. Try to find a literary agent who will represent you. Publishers will do the marketing for you.

Finally, someone telling the truth, how refreshing! We need more people like yourself on this platform and others, telling the truth and setting realistic expectations. It pains me to see the dishonesty of some other people on YT, they build peoples hopes up falsely, and cause a lot of harm to people and their mental health and maybe even contribute to people taking their own lives.

KZbin apparently is becoming or has already become an informercial platform. When I see an over-enthusiastic hypster guy or girl with well-lit videos and a charisma more appropriate for a salesman than a teacher, I immediately know something's not looking right. KZbin is basically the Instagram of videos: sales, appearances, pedantry, "fake it until you make it" type of content.

@Rebecca Julia 🕊 I agree; there are far too many KZbinrs hyping up the thousands (some even say millions) they allegedly made from these side hustles. If a depressed person spends months replicating this and fails, they could easily become suicidal. My home country (New Zealand) has a high suicide rate as people often feel helpless to get out of debt due to the high cost of living and low wages.

*What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Thank you for keeping it real. I have only been with KDP for about a week, and I like it. And yes, I'm learning what I can learn. I just started with low quality books because I need to learn. I want to make a cookbook of my recipes, and I want to take my time. The get rich quick scheme is not what I'm looking for because I know to make real money it takes time. I started with about seven journals just to get the hang of how to work the creation pages. I want to make products geared to teach children how to do math problems like algebra and or decimals, something that they can use in their little life's just because they are just getting started. That means my books will begin to have meat on the inside of the pages which is what I want. Again thank you for taking out the time to tell us the truth about it all. peace

I want to thank you for your gentle and forthright review of KDP. I just recently joined KDP, and after a week realized the immense learning curve necessary to find ‘any’ success using this model. You confirmed my observations. As a senior, I’m looking to augment our monthly income, but as I just recently told someone, “Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without personal cost.” When I said it, I asked myself if I was listening 😊. That’s the truth of success. Because of your frank video, it’s removed the internal struggle, stress and pressure to ‘produce’ within a self defined timeline. I will be successful, that’s a given, but it will be because I’ve done the work and been mindful of the pitfalls, the unrealistic hype, and my own naive expectations. Thank you again. Bless you and much success.

Very good, real, advice. This month marks my first year at KDP. My experience mirrors yours almost exactly. I made nothing my first two months (all notebooks). In month three I tried a higher content book and saw my first sales. I made a few dozen sales on that one medium content book in month three. My income has steadily increased since then. Since January of this year, I'm averaging about $500 per month (all organic, no ads). I've published over 370 books. Of those, I have three that I make daily sales on. Maybe 10-15 that I get weekly sales on, I get random sales on others every now and then, but the vast majority of the books I've created haven't sold a single copy (deservedly so, to be honest). My advice to anyone trying it is the same as yours. Try to find a niche that interests you, keep the quality up, and when you hit on something that works, start working on complementary titles. I believe there are ways to make a REAL income at this, but I haven't yet figured it out. As you say, the learning curve is a steep one and I still have a ways to go.

REPENT OF YOUR SINS Just Believe ❤️ Love you and GOD BLESS

I stumbled in your video attracted by the "brutally honest" keyword in the title. What you say is so true and so honest because I'm living the same thing. I started by KDP journey in medium content book and entered in rich niches knowing that my life would have been difficult but potentially rewarding. I was so excited after my first book sold 14 copies in one month for a revenue of 140 $. I thought it was easy.. but after that great month all the sales stopped. 0 sales the month after and another 0 two months later. I tried also promoting and advertising but nothing. I started to move price up and down and again nothing. Should I quit? No I won't. I'm creating other books and I know that something will happen (hopefully :))

Hello Gem, and thank you again for your honest insights. I'm pretty new at self-publishing and hope to make it worthwhile for our future (me and my wife), as we are less than half a decade away from retirement. I just started this journey, and I fully agree that books with at least medium content give much more value and selling potential overall. I feel like I'm constantly overwhelmed and bombarded with newsfeed updates and researching browsing where it seems everybody is constantly pushing "the low-content, easy and fast, why aren't you doing it" narrative. I got into writing to share my experience with the public, and I hope to give something back to it. My niche is 30+ years in computer systems, but I hope to share my side experiences in space science, astronomy, and hopefully some self-help books I know that can help people who go through the same struggles I've done. Your words and thoughts were very helpful for me in walking away from the "AI-driven, instant-write this crowd" and getting back to my roots on why I started writing. Thanks again, and have a wonderful week. - Keith

📚 *Thank you* for being honest about this. It is important to know that some of the channels that are experiencing success started this journey before it became more popular and saturated. I've now spoken to 7 people who were making five figures a month in 2018 and 2019 but have moved on to write fiction novels now. I have just quit low content publishing after a year of making high quality books (a dozen now) and seeing very low sales. I even followed the advice from good channels like Home Boss and Ashley Schmitt. I also took advice from a successful romance author who used to publish low content books. I still cannot pay a single monthly bill with the money I am earning from low content and I am writing my first novel now.

Hi, I think part of the problem with your overall sales, is that in one year, you have only created a total of 12 books. That is not enough to establish your own brand. Another potential problem may be that you have not focused on a particular theme to concentrate on, as in niching down within a category. For example, if you chose to make lined journals, that is too broad a category, and you would need to do the all-important keyword research to "niche-down" into a more specific category that is currently selling well, but not so huge an amount that your book starts off already overwhelmed in a highly competitive, or too general a category. So you can to search on Amazon, (as an example), for journals, but make a list of the top 10-20 or so listed in the lines that pop-up below the search bar. Then write those down to use as a jumping-off point to start niching-down your search for categories that are selling, but are not too broad. Then start researching each of those new keywords and look at the books in the top sellers and see if they are something you can do better, something you can compete with by adding more value, better quality cover or inside features. So as an example only, maybe you made that list of the top 20 things that came up when you first typed in "journal", and then found "journal for new moms" was one of those, but that may still be too broad a category, and you may see after you type that one in, that a new list popped-up below the search bar, and you see, "journal for new moms of twins", and check out the journal offerings, and see that you could do better then some of those listed in the top 10 on the page for that category. Then be inspired to create a better cover and add value by having a useful mix of things inside, that a mother of twins may find useful. Check out related blogs, Pinterest and Instagram pages, and regular books to inspire you with creative and different ideas for content (as in useful check-off lists, fill-in lists for time schedules that the mom may want to track, a space to list foods given and if eaten or not, etc.0 Plus add cute little images here and there in an unobtrusive spot on each page. Be sure to populate your keyword listing that Amazon gives you with descriptive keywords, make your cover more appealing, and title of the book really descriptive. You can make use of their A+ feature to tell more about your book also. Then, continue exploring related categories, and 'wash-rinse-repeat". The research for the keywords and niching-down of a main category should give you lots of ideas to CREATE MORE BOOKS! So you want to keep the quality up there, have an attractive cover and title, and get those important keywords, since they are what will help people find your book, and don't forget to add more value to your low-content books by adding more useful features. Don't leave the journals just lined but with no guiding fill-in or check-off boxes, or place for dates, times, or whatever is appropriate for the journal, no matter if it's twins, camping, cheerleading, car maintenance, house keeping, cooking, home budget...... add value! Of course my example was low-content lined journals, but it can apply to almost any low content type of book.

You are so cute! Thanks for sharing! I've been writing children's books for years, it's such a huge passion of mine and it's never been about the money. But all the KDP vids are about notebooks and planners so I've suddenly fallen into doing that instead and started to lose track a bit. But you're right, it's important to test the waters and learn the ropes through publishing notebooks first and then start taking it more seriously. Hearing you say that you started slow but eventually your children's books go picked up, pushed me back on the right path with a lot of faith! So thank you!
