Affordable. I think it was about $600 for a two week rental from the airport last I checked. I was wondering if the length of the trip could be cut in half if the infrastructure was there? Like, would you and Nene travel after sundown to get to your destination instead of stopping when you had to/when weather permitted? Excellent set of vids Todd. Keep'em coming.
@NowinLao

With infrastructure like you're talking about, you would not even see the real Laos. All the interesting villages and people are to be found between the destinations. It's like the new Vientiane to Vang Vieng expressway. It only takes a bit over an hour now.... but all those markets and villages, sugar cane and cassava chip vendors, roadside forest markets, farmers and buffalo ploughing fields. All the sights you never see elsewhere, you miss all that now. You miss the real Laos. Also, why travel into the night? Why not stop and explore a village while you still have light. If i did not have the time to do this whole trip, i would make it a shorter trip but go at the same pace. All the interesting stuff happens when you get out of your car, not staying in it 👌 Thanks for coming along Will. We have a great new adventure for you to come along on 😋👍

Ah yes. Yet even those are very minimal. View point climbs are usually 10,000 kip ($1 US) The waterfall entries 20,000kip ($2 US) I think the caves in Viang Xai were the most expensive at, i think, 40,000 ($4 US) for foreigner and 10,000kip for local... but all these come down to the individual, similar to snacks and souvenirs. For those interested, the zip lining at the very tall waterfall was only $20 US 👌

Hi, started watching your videos a few weeks ago when the algorithm popped you up after watching mark wiens..lol..watched some of this series but need to catch the rest..you about right on with the costs, before the pandemic I use to visit almost every year..in the dry season (end of Oct. to around Feb. or March) you could get away with a 2 wd...a little toyota corolla size would cost half as much to rent...the car rental place at the airport generally have newer cars with more selection but Avis is slightly cheaper (have not rented from hertz)..the owner of the Avis place is an ex-pat too...for those that don't know all you need is a driver's license from your home country and a credit card to pay for the rental purchase and deposit (I believe it's $1,000 or maybe $2,000 been awhile) but they'll refund the deposit back to your credit card...keep up with the videos and when Laos opens back up i'll make sure to stop by the restaurant

Some of throughs places are very pretty. I'm sure you have thought about making some calendars along the way? That one water fall was unbelievable beautiful. And the mountain look so fresh. I would love too have a calendar with throughs pictures on them. Just an Idea. Roll them up into a tube for easy shipping. I know you get all kinds of Ideas like that. How hard is it to go from Viet Nan into Laos, Crossing the border?

Thanks for this information. I have been watching all of your videos but have not commented. I like that you show exactly where on the map you are. I'm slowly but surely trying to learn about these villages in hopes of one day I can take my father to visit his family. He left Laos at a young age and immigrated to the US and has not had the opportunity to go back and it breaks my heart. So thank you for providing a little piece of home to those who are unable to be there.

@@NowinLao well he was born in sayabouly but didn't really grow up there. He spent most of his childhood in the refugee camps in Thailand. He believes he has a sister living in barn nongbaue and a brother in barn donglaueng. Not sure if I'm spelling it how it sounds.

@@catoupachak are those villages in sayabouly? Have you tried finding them on Google maps? We have only quickly passed thru Xayabouly once, but not an extensive trip. Just to Pak Lai. It is still one area we need to travel.

The real cost of the travel to Laos from the US is the airfare. I picked a random week in May. I could fly from Los Angeles - Bangkok for under US$600. On the same dates, the flights into Vientiane was US$4500. I do not know if this was due to Covid-19. Both costs were surprising as LAX-BKK is usually around $900.

Growing up and living in the mountains of Pennsylvania and working in the tree industry cutting for power companies and later logging I really love seeing all the footage of the countryside and forests. I'm still not 100% sure where I want to move to,Thailand or Laos.May just settle on one for a while then hop to the other for a while. BTW,what's the name of the last song?

Thank you for recording, producing and showing us all your videos! :) I have two questions. Is the whole route, or some parts of it, possible to do by traveling by buss? Would that be possible for someone who does not talk the local language, lao or tribe. If I did that, I could not do all the excursions you did, but I would not do them anyway going alone in a car, as I am not a used driver even on good roads... If you know or think about a part that is, or not is possible to cover by buss, please tell me if you have time :)

Yeah, fair enough since you are talking weeks as opposed to months form backpackers in Australia. Once borders open, it might be an interesting business to get into. I would think it is much easier these days, as opposed to twenty years ago, to navigate roads and border crossings in your own vehicle.

Maybe a business opportunity here , instead of cars do like they do in Vietnam, they have bike trips going up and down from one end if Vietnam to the other, hire a local to be a guide. Go see a few hotels and restaurants ( and bars haa ) , you would have to invest in a few bikes say about four to start with , you could still run the restaurant , I know plenty of blokes in Aus , who do the Vietnam name trip , just a thought mate,

I was thinking the same. Or a local couple with a big enough car or truck. Traveler pays for gas and hotel and a fee for their time. Either way it would be cheaper than the car rental.

@@ericthornton5252 it's very popular in Vietnam, Lao is so raw when it comes to tourism, all you need is the cash to set it up, there is the opportunity to make some good money
