Jose A Hernandez A The Philippines is named for King Philip II of Spain. The current president, riding on a wave of nationalism and idolizing the dictator Marcos, wants to remove the legacy of colonialism by naming it after the pre-colonial warrior class on the biggest island of Luzon, or “maharlika”, though he interpreted it as “royalty”.
@JarrodBaniqued
@JarrodBaniqued 6 жыл бұрын
Critics say that being overly concerned with such a change distracts from the human rights abuses under Duterte and Marcos. (Two other things of note: “Maharlika” originally comes from the Sanskrit for “freedmen”. When I asked my mother how she felt about the possible change, she said “kalayaan”, Tagalog for “freedom”, and “marikit”, or “beautiful” would be more appropriate. I also suggested “pulo”, or “island”.)

The Hawaiian kings that united the islands in the mid 1800s wanted to be a British colony/protectorate, so they effectively gave themselves to the British, who didn't entirely accept, but maintained good relations allowing trade and spread of ideas - it's a weird story given that the British never seemed opposed to extra colonies in other times.

Elephant is Thai national animal and I love them a lot too. Since 1592 we used them fought in many wars and won a lot then elephant be like sacred animal and it is the symbol of vehicle of the god(we got the regime that king is the being of god reborn on earth) in Southeast Asia at that era which every kingdom can’t lose it and hunting them is taboo (they believed if they kill elephant, it will make the god angry and that person/their family/local/kingdom will met the disaster) so many people very respect and fear them but even though then or until now they are still have ivory smugglers and hunting them even if elephants are protected by the Wildlife Protection Law now.

I have a question. Once humanity finally stopped killing elephant for ivory, what would happen to the ivory that was already collected (confiscated or recently taken from elephants before the stopping of the killings)? Could they still be carved and sold? Would the price of Ivory rise/lowen? Or would it all be burned down?

@OpinionesDeJACCsOpinions 6 жыл бұрын
I refuse to acknowledge that! But, its funny that I'm not the only one, because pretty much everyone that isn't the UN or an official document won't use that name. I think it has to do with French spelling and pronouciation. Also, it was done to be higher in the Latin alphabet.

I think the name and flag need to change the people are just not ready but many agree on those two they are too reminiscent of the colonial past. Also the elephant is also the main animal of ivory coasts main ethnic tribe the baoule. The first ivorian president was also a baoule soo i dont think its no coincidence.
