I put the 38 bronco tank in my 97 f250 HD. It wasn't any bigger pain in the butt to put in than the stock tank was to get out. I put a sump on the left front side of the tank, I probably wouldn't have done it if I did much off roading. But it is above the center line of the axle. I use a little auxiliary pump to transfer fuel from the front tank to the rear. I now have enough tanks that I can look for the best price.

Rich, not sure if you know this but the OBS Ford’s actually had a longer radiator support for the diesel application in comparison to the gas applications. The part that hangs between the rails at the bottom that is close to your balancer actually hung quite a bit lower on the 7.3 OBS vs the gas OBS due to having a larger radiator for the diesel. Being that this was originally a gas truck is the reason why it’s so close to your balancer. If it was originally a diesel you’d have plenty of clearance because the radiator support would hang farther down. The stock diesel radiator supports are hard to find for a good price so modifying and dropping it yourself is probably the best bet.

There are two ways to safely weld a gas tank. First is do it when it's brand new and never had fuel in it. Second is to steam it out with high temperature steam for a couple hours - they do that with tank trucks in the oilfield to make them safe for servicing after they've been hauling volatile fluids. Home repair is better suited to a tube of sealall - I've applied that to a gas tank at -15c, the car was pulled off the road before the patch leaked.

Hey Rich, for what its worth, if you are worried about the thermostat housing being the highest point vs the radiator. if you have some room, you can always run a tiny header tank setup up higher in the corner of the bay with a couple 3/8th coolant hoses coming from the Thermostat housing and the radiator tank to ensure the air gets bled out.

If it was a diesel tank, you can weld those no problem. Clean with soapy water etc then purge with argon and keep the argon going during welding. Wouldn't weld on a petrol tank though, can be done but much higher chance of becoming the next man on the moon. Those things really want the whole steam clean, heat, steam clean gas test etc done on them first. Also, if your tank is leaking, just rub a bar of soap over the hole. Keep rubbing it in there and the leak will stop pretty quickly.

So happy that the cylinder head cooperated with you with relocating the rear fuel outlet to the side of the engine! The whole time the video is playing I am looking around to see if the side plug was there or not!! Thanks for saving another one of these old Cats. It breaks my heart to see them getting scrapped here in the states as once they are gone, they are gone and the yellow tractor factory isn't making them anymore. The little mounting stud on the head under the fuel line port is a ground stud. It doesn't have to be right there but make sure that you ground the engine to your frame ground well so that any stray current that might make it into the engine won't cause the cavitations due to electrical arcing. Also I'm pretty sure that Cat offered a thermostat housing top that already had the top radiator hose connection turned 90 degrees which might help in having enough space to get your cooling system in. I can look up the part number if you neeed it.

I had a stock 89 that the frame cracked around the steering box and the crossmember under the engine. There’s just not enough side to side support to keep the frame from bending when you steer it.

Looks like it’s coming together nicely 👍. Honestly the fine points of making something like your doing come together is great to see. I’m sure others feel the same. A day that any of doesn’t learn something is a wasted day. A lot of times a persons eye picks up on things they didn’t even realize until that bit of wisdom is needed. I like to see how it’s done now compared to the late 70s when we were stretching trucks for 18 ton auger tenders for the farm and dry fertilizer delivery. In our area I’ve built some of first carrot harvesters , potato tippers. Now at 75 I just built yard carts for grandchildren, great grandchildren. Used to built sand rails set up with self loading Tee trailers. It was always fun you could drive on drop a couple pins and be on the road in 5 minutes. Great content 👍 🇺🇸🦅🌏⚓️🇺🇸.

We will have to paint the back of the cab and hood at some point and it will never see winter regularly. Might do it all at once in the downtime. Would like to drive it this year

Talking about how small the gas tank is, you can replace the rear tank with one from the same generation Bronco. They only had one and it was I believe 38 gallons vs the 19 I think the trucks currently is. Only downside is you loose a spot for the spare tire.
