According to my research: The series was originally called “Head of the Family” and starred Carl Reiner. However, CBS executives thought Reiner was “too Jewish, too intellectual, and too New York.” They cast Dick Van Dyke instead, creating a new version of the show. Van Dyke took a risk by signing on, as he was already starring in a hit Broadway show at the time. Fortunately, “The Dick Van Dyke Show” became a classic, centered around Rob Petrie (played by Van Dyke), his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore), and their comedy co-writers12. Interestingly, Johnny Carson was also considered for the role of Rob Petrie1. Carl Reiner’s creative vision and the talented cast contributed to the show’s enduring success

I think the lead of a show called The Dick Van Dyke Show really had to go to Dick Van Dyke. In all seriousness, the fact they named the show after him is remarkable. Regardless of how well his career was going prior to that, it seems to me that he wasn't at the level to have warranted that.

It’s interesting to see how much some of these people made on these old shows. Thank you for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and have a great day. Take care!

For me, one of the best written shows ever (and it's about tv writers too!) Today's sitcoms are nothing but bad jokes and depricating humour. A smart contract decision and he keeps on keeping on at 96.

Agree. Dick Van Dyke once mentioned that Carl Reiner was great at paying attention to how the show's actors talked in real life and writing for their voices' unique 'notes' and rhythms. I think that's one of the reasons they sound so natural in the show. That, and being so talented!

As long as each actor was paid what was agreed to beforehand, it's nobody's business what co-workers make.

I think they used the word Calvada, hoping I'm spelling that right, in one of the plots. It might have been the one where Rob is trying to get Buddy and Sally a raise. I might be wrong on that, but I have heard that word somewhere on The Dick Van Dyke show. Or maybe I just saw it on the closing credits.

@wiseguy… One episode is called “Big Max Calvada”. Sheldon Leonard played a gangster type character who wanted the writers to come up with an act for his untalented nephew. Excellent episode.

I read in Vince Waldron's book about the show that Rose Marie made $1K per episode at the beginning, about 2/3 of what Van Dyke made, and the other regulars were probably similarly compensated. His book mentioned that Danny Thomas himself offered MTM a small part of his ownership in the show, but she turned it down to make more $ upfront. Of course she made much more from her own self-named sitcom, which led to many other shows, both comedies & dramas, being produced by her company (MTM) as well.

Back then, nobody dreamed that all the channels we have now would ever exist. TV performer contracts were such that even the star of a series, like Mr. Van Dyke, only got paid for a VERY limited number of re-runs of any series work they had done. Most TV actors in the 1960s were only paid for the first 4 or 5 times any episode was re-run on TV. After that, the actor got NOTHING unless it was specifically spelled out in that individual actor’s contract that he or she WOULD be paid a given amount of money for a given number of re-runs of episodes of a series. Most people have NO CLUE about how much or how little actors make.

Interesting video! I really enjoyed that on stage, facing the audience shot of Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke. Plus the magic 8 ball! Never knew when it was originally made, but cool to see it in this video. Also loved the way you said Mary Poppings, instead of Mary Poppins. Made me smile. 😁 As for the salary, DVD was very clever. As was Bill Frawley back in his day. But we shouldn’t focus so much on who got paid what, but more on the performance each actor gave to earn not only that money, but to earn the hearts of the viewing audience. That in itself is not an easy task as you should know, being a YT professional yourself. Great video all around. Good work! 👍🏻

Hey, Rick, enjoyed your video. Dick Van Dyke was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I think his brother Jerry was overshadowed by him. I think in many ways he was more talented. It's great that Mary Tyler More became highly successful after the show was over, with her own production company. A bit of trivia, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was authored by James Bond author Ian Fleming.

Calvada ended up being a bit of an Easter egg for the show. It was the name of a guest character in one episode, and in another it was on a billboard as the name of a drink.
